Plot Drop 07 Update:

After being featured in plot drop 07, Ian has sustained several injuries from the Jack-o-Lantern and is on a leave of absence from both jobs for the time being until he has recovered.

𝔉𝔞𝔪𝔦𝔩𝔶

Ian was raised by his maternal grandmother.

His mother had been in and out of his life up until the age of three but Ian has no recollection of her. He does, however, cherish the five pictures he has of the two of them together.

He knows even less about his father. He’s only ever been referred to by his grandmother as “that good for nothing hippy bastard” and he was out of his mother’s life before she gave birth.

He wishes to one day meet his dad and smoke a joint with him.

He has no siblings (to his knowledge).

His relationship with his grandmother became strained the older Ian got and he inevitably ended up moving out with a friend at the age of 17. He still visits her infrequently (they both live here still) and occasionally gets back to the voicemails she leaves about once a week.

𝔈𝔡𝔲𝔠𝔞𝔱𝔦𝔬𝔫

Ian got straight C’s through out high school and was a regular to detention though he was often the bullied fighting back in the scenario. His teachers never cared about that.

He dropped out half way through his senior year around when he got his first job at High Scores back when it was in the plaza. School was never his thing and he saw sitting around fixing arcade games and counting tickets as a sound career path.

Ian liked learning and would’ve gotten better grades had he “applied himself”. Sometimes he thinks about getting his GED but with the stress surrounding the killers it’s unlikely he’d want to find the time.

ℑ𝔫𝔱𝔢𝔯𝔢𝔰𝔱𝔰

Music, music, music. A quarter of Ian’s paycheck(s) are put towards concert tickets, and records. He’s your typical punk/new wave/alternative listener. Huge fan of The Clash, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Cure, The Smiths, The Church, Joy Division to name a few.

He left high school almost immediately after getting a job at another arcade so he’s definitely a gamer. When he isn’t cementing his high scores at the arcade, he’s playing his NES, or on his way to a D&D night.

Journals when no one is looking. He broke up with an ex because they found his “diary”.

Cooking on and off. The whole reason Ian got a job at Late Riser was because he liked to cook though his passion for it has dwindled now doing it for a living. He’ll still occasionally whip up a comfort meal that his grandma used to make or following a random recipe off a box.

Dating, lol. He’s a serial monogamist. He’s either in a relationship, crying while listen to an ex’s favorite album after a breakup, or hitting the bars looking for the next. Relationships have lasted anywhere from three weeks to nearly three years. He is currently dating Bo Turner ( @urdamage) who he dated for three years from the age of 16 to 19. They’d been in an on and off again limbo ever since and officially got back together nearly four years later after the first plot drop.

𝔓𝔢𝔯𝔰𝔬𝔫𝔞𝔩𝔦𝔱𝔶

He’s very mysterious and brooding on the outside because… he’s shy. Sometimes he rolls with coming off as an asshole because it saves him from having to fumble through conversation.

Ian tends to be on the quiet side. He surrounds himself with more outgoing people and while he’s usually involved he’s rarely the loudest voice in a group. He prefers one on one interactions even amongst his closest friends.

He’s loyal. Most of his friends he’s had since elementary school and people that have entered his life later on learn quickly that they can depend on him. Partly because he’s usually not doing anything when he isn’t working.

Know-it-all. He’ll talk your ear off about something you couldn’t care less about.

He’s sensitive and expressive. Ian isn’t afraid to speak his mind and tell someone how he’s feeling. He likes to be in control of his emotions and situations so he has a habit of offering up too much information. He likes being forward with people and people being forward with him. He’d rather put his thoughts and feelings out there and get a response than dance around a subject.

He works at both High Scores and Late Riser*. Gotta support the collectable hoarding somehow.

The only reason Ian isn’t a manager at High Scores is because Ian doesn’t want to be a manager at High Scores. He’s been working in arcades since he was seventeen and knows the place better than anyone else.

You can usually find him halfway inside an arcade game fixing it or throwing in an extra tootsie roll in the bag for a kid who really sucks at skee-ball.

He’s been working the seven to midnight shift at Late Riser* as a line cook for two years now. He makes the best breakfast hash you can buy for $4.50.

No, he won’t cook for you off the clock…. unless he really, really likes you.

*As of Plot Drop 007 Ian no longer works at Late Riser due to the injuries to the hand (and the trauma he experiences just walking near the place) it is no longer a fit work environment. Ian has returned to work at High Scores as of August 1988. He only works  a day or two a week and calls out frequently.

"You mean you're not sure if she only wants you?" Ian asked for clarification though he didn't wait to get any. "Last I checked Dolly was pretty monogamist, so," Ian said with a shrug. Again he could only speak from his experience dating her but the two had very much so exclusively been an item when they were together. "It is scary to ask but it's a sure lot more scary hanging onto a great big 'what if'. You don't want her to slip through the cracks just because you waited too long," Ian stated. He'd definitely been on that end of things and while he was currently very happy with the man he had decided to spend the rest of his life with that didn't mean there'd been times he hadn't been haunted by crushes he hadn't acted on. Ian was constantly in pursuit of love and he hadn't always been very choosey. "Trust me, I've dated a lot of people and it never gets easier. It doesn't get easier even if you're asking the same person again," Ian admitted. "Did you know I never even asked Bo to be my boyfriend again? I was too scared to jump to conclusions even though he was already living with me again and for months before we became 'official' again." Ian and Bo had gotten back together under traumatic circumstances after Bo had been attacked but that didn't mean Ian hadn't had his own insecurities when it came to getting back together.

"I didn't, no." Mingyu confirmed. "It would probably have been better if I did. My dad was really worried about me going to another country, so he wanted to come with me. Now he worries because we live... well... here." He let out a dry chuckle. "I think he was fully ready to pack up and move after my roommate was attacked, but I couldn't leave, you know? And he wouldn't go without me, so I guess we're both staying." Part of him felt guilty for keeping his father hostage in a town full of murderers, but he had tried his best to live his own life and take responsibility. Was it his fault that his parent didn't let him? "Not really trying to make it big, I just want to travel and try new things."

Ian didn't have strong opinions when it came to families but it did sound nice to have a dad that was willing to travel halfway across the world for you. He didn't even have a dad who bothered to see him be born before he took off to greener pastures. "I'd move if I were you," Ian told them flat out. They'd already gotten themselves out of one home it only made sense that someone would leave Shrike if they could. Surely there wasn't anything keeping this person tethered to Shrike like he was. "There's no reason to keep yourself in a hellhole like this place especially if your goal is travel. You're about a thousand miles away from anything worth seeing in the world," Ian went on. Shrike certainly wasn't home to trying new things. Even with the mall in town Ian still got up to the same things he had his entire life the only thing that changed was that he now had more wrinkles to show for it.

Ian knew deep down there wasn't much he could do for Lou right now and continuing to ask wouldn't make him any more helpful. For someone who hated hospitals, Ian had gotten himself quite familiar with the way they operated and how it felt being a patient that felt trapped there. He knew his main purpose was just to be there for Lou and to keep them company and eat up some of the endless amount of time that they had to spend cooped up. It was what all Ian's visitors had done for him and what he'd done for others in turn.

"You been catching up on any good TV?" Ian asked as he nodded his head towards the TV that hung in front of the bed. He'd spent a lot of his time watching TV during his recovery and he could only assume Lou did the same. "I actually started watching that show Full House in here and I still watch it sometimes," Ian admitted. He wasn't typically a fan of daytime sitcoms but had slim pickings in the hospital that the show had grown on him.

once upon a time, ian’s thoughts would have been correct. not necessarily about ottilie, as to have such a vendetta against anything - no matter how extreme or petty - was absolutely in ottilie’s character, but about how the service industry wasn’t the be all end all for anyone. ottilie quickly decided to leave the conversation there, not wanting to bring so much brutal honesty up in ian’s presence, but in the current state of the tortured shrike heights, ottilie believed that her worries were valid; if anyone thought she might betray them during this time of needing people to work together and keep each other safe more than ever, it could easily lead to her being asked to leave the team. if an employer thought that their employee would only hinder the rest of them should the very worst happen - another attack - ottilie could understand cutting ties. 

“yeah, i get that,” ottilie nodded. even during their time of being the closest they ever were, ottilie didn’t think that they were all that close, but even so, to be behind instead of in front of a camera lens made sense for what she knew of ian’s character. “i guess so,” ottilie agreed with ian’s comment about shrike and its scenic nature. “maybe i’m just a bitter old hag,” she decided, exaggerating her self deprecation for ian’s sake - not wanting him to feel uncomfortable with any negative comment that might have felt a bit too real. “exactly,” she laughed when ian finally agreed with her. “but oz does it, somehow. suppose people probably think similar things about all of my hobbies that they don’t get, though,” she defended the other side of her own argument. 

“You’re not an old hag,” Ian defended her with a laugh. Even though their time as anything more than just “friends” had been short and messy that didn’t mean that Ian didn’t find her to be quite attractive and anything but an old hag. He had eyes after all and certainly didn’t have eyes for anyone he’d ever consider old. Regardless, Ian could agree with Ottilie there. “I guess you’re right. I could probably play a hundred rounds of Dig Dug without ever getting bored,” he went on to agree. Video games had always been a passion of his but he knew that spending hours staring at an 8-bit screen and flushing quarters down the drain was everybody’s idea of a fun afternoon. Ian wasn’t entirely sure what Ottilie’s hobbies were considering most of their interacting happened in the diner but he was sure she got up to plenty others deemed pointless. That was just part of being human and being an individual. Other people were destined not to get everything someone else found entertaining.

“i’d really appreciate that,” topher nodded with a smile, knowing that he’d really love an invite over for some food - though also knowing at the same time that he wouldn’t push for an actual invite over there. he needed to spend more time with friends for his own good; especially since his brother had moved away from home, topher had been lonelier than ever. unfortunately at the same time, topher had only grown into his anxiety, so to avoid being a burden, he’d wait until he got a concrete invitation from ian or bo. “oh yeah? that’s so great to hear,” topher remembered when bo first got his job at showtime, so to picture him as a manager felt like a full circle moment; if anyone deserved a promotion, it was the man who had been dedicated to enthusiastically upselling all the best flicks since he was a teenager. “oh yeah, totally,” he nodded again, having lost track of time in the conversation that had lasted much longer than intended - which was a good thing to topher, of course. “it’s always great to see you,” he took a step backwards, initiating the physical parting of their goodbye. “we’ll definitely catch up soon,” he suggested, though again, it would be topher who would wait for ian - or most likely his partner - to initiate the actual plan making to catch up again in the future.  

“Likewise, dude, I’ll see you around,” Ian promised Topher as he finally left the area to head up to the checkout. Even though they hadn’t actually cemented any plans to see each other in the future yet Ian really did hope that their paths would cross again sooner rather than later. Ian hadn’t had high hopes for his trip to the gas station today. In fact, he’d hoped that he wouldn’t run into anyone because he hadn’t been in the mood to socialize much at all but after seeing a friend out in the world he didn’t find the encounter as bad as he’d expected. Ian looked forward to actually having something positive to tell his partner when he returned home with the few essentials he’d gone out to pick up for the pair. Ian hadn’t had much interaction outside of his partner the last few months and he knew that was something that worried Bo. Even though Ian wasn’t all that outgoing his attack still took quite the toll on his social life by dwindling it down to nothing. Ian knew that after telling Bo about his plans on cooking for Topher and them that he’d like be encouraged to follow through and Ian liked the thought of running into Topher again sooner rather than later.

               bo’s comment wasn’t only a compliment for the sake of complimenting his partner - he meant it so wholeheartedly ; ian was incredible , he always had been , and he had truly outdone himself on this birthday of bo’s . having grown up a true turner , with access to plentiful funds , bo didn’t think a whole lot of material objects . of course , they were still greatly appreciated , and desired even , but something like a hand made gift held even more importance and specialness than a store bought gift could ever . to know that ian had gone out of his way to not only hand craft something , but to hand craft a piece of art that would greatly benefit bo’s own art - it meant more than only so much to bo . bo didn’t have the vocabulary to tell ian how special he was , but he was dedicated to the cause , and knew he would try every day until the end of their lives . “ it looks perfect , honest , baby , ” he nodded his head enthusiastically , already foreseeing himself using the pencil holder with great success . “ thanks , baby , ” he laughed , a slightly bashful laugh , not because he necessarily felt bashful , though . “ it’s always the best day when i’m with you , iv , ” he vowed ; while that had definitely been tested in recent times , particularly throughout the roughest moments of ian’s recovery , bo still believed it to be completely true . “ i just love you so much , ” he told him sincerely , moving to the side so that he could wrap his arms around ian’s shoulder’s properly , nuzzling his face into the man’s dark hair as he squeezed him gently . 

“I love you more than anything,” Ian promised his partner after the sweet words were directed towards him yet again. It was easy for him to gush about his love for Bo during times like this. Any moment could be made intimate between the two of them when they were alone and Ian loved sharing those sacred words with his partner whenever the moment arose which was quite often as of late. Ian leaned into his partner’s embrace. To be held by Bo made an already good day that much better and it really didn’t matter to Ian what they got up to the rest of the day. Knowing Bo he wouldn’t be asking for much more on his birthday if he was anything like himself in the past birthdays they’d shared together. Bo never asked for much and even went so far as to not want much for his special day and even though Ian was different from his partner when it came to his own birthday he was more than willing to give Bo a lowkey celebration. As long as Bo was happy, that was all Ian cared about and if that was just cuddling away the rest of the day so be it.

Ian still felt a bit awkward for using the Ryder household as a pit stop for his anxiety but he felt better now that he’d calmed himself down some. Even though the visit was relatively short Ian knew that he’d have to make more time for friends again in the future. Ian might not be as outgoing as his partner that was waiting back at home for him but he still needed the social interaction all the same. Ian nodded his head at Lou’s promise of future plans. Even if there was no date in sight Ian would be sure to make it happen or at the very least put it on Bo to make the hangout happen. He was a lot better at this sort of thing than him and he was sure Bo would be more than happy to arrange plans to hang out with the Ryders again. “I’ll be sure to let Bo know that I stopped by,” Ian promised. “Thanks again for letting me use your bathroom,” he added as he headed for the door and eventually let himself back out of the house he’d come in to. Fortunately Lou’s place wasn’t too long of a drive back to Ian’s apartment and he didn’t waste any more time once he got in his car and proceeded to drive off in the direction of home. Hopefully he’d be able to make it without any more stops along the way.  

               lou understand anxiety; they often don’t allow others to see that side of them, the type of person who actively tries to appear stronger than they are, untouchable, unaffected by the emotions that plague other people, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. they are strong, but they’re still human; they don’t know of ian’s true intentions coming here, but if they did know, they’d understand. even if they didn’t understand, they’d have supported their friend, anyway. “any time vogt, for real,” they offer casually, but casual is often laced with sincerity when coming from lou. if lou doesn’t have a temper going, it’s often safe to say that they’re affectionate in their interaction, in their own way. they don’t follow ian out the entire way, but they do trail behind enough to keep an eye on him all the way to the front door; it’s the polite thing to do, and while lou doesn’t care an awful lot for manners, there’s nothing preventing them from seeing ian out properly, like a good host should. “get home safe, man, good seeing you again!” they call, feeling an uncharacteristic amount of worry as they let ian go back into the world that has hurt him so irreversibly.

to be completely frank, dustin wouldn’t have known if family planning was something talked about much amongst siblings, either. despite the fact that dustin was close to his many siblings, his family dynamic was hardly a typical one. in particular, as he and the other eldest siblings of the family had had to step up into more of a parental rather than sibling like role in their growing up, it was hard to say what a sibling who was allowed to simply be a sibling would talk about with the rest of them. dustin was relatively happy to answer any questions ian had for him, but it was probably for the best that ian left the topic there with his ‘fair enough’. after the rough morning dustin had had, he didn’t want to risk darkening his mind and mood thinking about how he had been robbed of the typical sibling experience by his neglectful parents.

“it’s funny, the way that is,” he commented. “i couldn’t imagine being alone in a room growing up; when i first experienced being alone, later in life, i had absolutely no idea what to do with myself. it was so weird, how loud the quiet was for me,” he shared. “don’t get me wrong, i’ve definitely learnt to appreciate it,” he chuckled. “but yeah, i spend too much time with loneliness and i think i’ll go crazy. thankfully i don’t have to worry about that much, though,” between his siblings, zeke, and even those he can find in the apartment complex like bo, dustin could typically find someone to save him from loneliness if need be. “you might be surprised how much i just appreciate another warm body around,” dustin confessed after ian’s comment about not being as chatty as his partner. “though for the record, you’ve always been able to hold a conversation real well with me,” he wasn’t only just saying that to be nice, either. ian was quieter, yes, but he often had the most interesting comments in the building, dustin believed. 

“That’s good you don’t have to worry about it,” Ian agreed even though he couldn’t relate to Dustin much. Outside of his partner, Ian had no real desire to constantly hang out with others. He spent enough time alone in his life that he’d grown to enjoy it and even favor it at times. Still he could see why Dustin was different and he could understand why especially now that Dustin liked to have others around. After what he’d gone through Ian could only assume it was tough being alone and in his own head. 

Ian took one last puff from his cigarette before extinguishing it underneath his foot. He paused just long enough to pick it back up and tuck into his pocket before he found a proper place to dispose of it. Ian was trying to cut back on smoking in general and that included his bad habits that went along with it like leaving his butts around. “Thanks, I try,” Ian commented. Ian could hold a conversation just fine he just had a habit of being quiet when in a crowd. He much preferred one on one interactions because of it and was also why he didn’t usually go out of his way to interact. “I like chatting with you,” Ian added because it was the truth. Dustin quickly became one of Ian’s favorite neighbors in the complex and was glad to have him living above him. “I’ve been coming to this park since I moved here,” Ian explained now that they’d finally gotten to their temporary location. Usually Ian would just turn back at this point but he figured he could linger there more now that he had the company.

               hedwig was always more than happy to find an excuse to make a new mixtape , and particularly when it was for somebody that they cared for so much as that always required more effort and consideration when choosing the songs . “ it’s one of my favourite things to do , ” working at the station was a great way for hedwig to be able to rotate through the extensive collection of music that he loved , but creating a mixtape was another good excuse to play through some songs he mightn’t have otherwise . the ultimate result would be a tape that ian would hopefully love listening to , but the creative process was also beneficial to hedwig - so of course they didn’t mind , and of course they would really like to do so . “ oh yeah , i’ve got a bunch of tapes in the glove box , or else that shoe box in the back , ” he told ian . “ i’m not quite sure what’s here and what’s in my apartment , but there’ll be something you like , have a rummage around , ” he offered . 

“ that’s impressive , ” hedwig commented . he would have thought that with the stressful life ian had lived - particularly in recent years - he’d have found a grey or two by now , but it also did make sense considering his genes . “ sounds like you’ve got good genes , then , ” he thought aloud , though after only a moment he regretted the thought as it got him thinking about his own genes , so much of which were unknown , or else thoughts of people he didn’t care to have so present in his mind . with a couple of hard blinks he willed the thoughts of his biological family away . “ do you think all the product bo puts in his hair will hinder or help long term ? ” he asked , slightly poking fun at ian’s partner - something hedwig couldn’t help but do despite it not being his intention - though mostly phrasing the amusing thought as an affectionate question - because he really was happy if ian was happy with bo , he supposed , only slightly begrudgingly . 

Ian shot a smile in Hedwig’s direction. He was excited for the mixtape whenever it might wind up in his possession.  He’d welcome the mix as a happy surprise and didn’t think to much more about it. As instructed Ian opened the glove compartment. As always there was a mix of albums Ian recognized and some Ian had no idea about. Part of him was tempted to pop something random into the cassette player but he opted for one of The Runaways cassettes instead. They were good driving music in Ian’s opinion. 

“Yeah, it’s the only good thing I got from my parents,” Ian explained not that he knew either of his parents very well. He didn’t even know if he had good genes or not but he was still too young for any complications with them to really pop up yet. At least he had his hair. Ian couldn’t help but laugh at the question about Bo. “I don’t know if it really matters. He’ll just change products for something else to fix his hair. I think it’s too much though,” Ian admitted. As far as Ian could tell Bo still had just as good of hair as he’d always had and no matter how long he spent fussing over it seemed to effect that though he was sure Bo would say otherwise. “He’ll take forever in the bathroom sometimes,” Ian elaborated though he was sure Hedwig already knew that about Bo. Unlike Ian, everyone else in their lives only ever saw Bo when he was completely put together.

“you totally should! we have a lot of fun down there,” arne nodded and smiled in encouragement, but he wouldn’t hold ian to it. not even before the man and his partner were attacked would arne strictly hold someone to an empty promise - in fact, arne didn’t even hold people to promises that they should have kept, an awful trait of the naïve man’s that his sibling continuously tried to help him work on to no avail. “i totally get you,” arne nodded again. “theater isn’t for everyone, and the two places are so different, like, completely different scenes,” information that wasn’t new to ian, but told to him either way. “yeah, seems like he’s got a good gig over there, which is super cool,” in arne’s opinion, though, both ian and bo had good gigs; they had a nice apartment, a beautiful relationship between the two of them, stable jobs - as stable as you could get in shrike heights, at least - a companion in their black cat, and as good of a life as one could have after what they’d been through. “ah, don’t worry about it,” arne shook his head and he smiled wide. “i appreciate it, though, but i’ve gotta get to work anyway,” not quite yet, but eventually. hopefully he could stay for long enough to see bo, but if he did manage to stick around that much longer, he foresaw himself definitely having to head off before the couple could even dig into their meals.  

Ian hadn’t gone out to have fun in quite some time and he really wasn’t sure that hitting up Julio’s would be his idea of fun anymore. Going out drinking at night just sounded like a dangerous act these days and Ian had never been much of a risk taker to begin with and that only heightened with age. “Yeah, I like a place where their focus is just drinks,” Ian confirmed regardless of whether or not he’d show up to the bar. “Yeah, he’s gotta work more hours now but the pay is better too,” Ian explained. It certainly helped that they had more income now. Even though they’d always made it work in the past it was nice not having to constantly be stressed for cash like they’d once been now that Bo had gotten a promotion. Hearing that Arne was on a bit of a time crunch got Ian feeling bad. He didn’t want to make him late for doing a nice thing for them and since he didn’t know exactly when Bo would be back he didn’t want to keep Arne waiting. “I’ll go gather the laundry then. I don’t want to be keeping you,” Ian insisted as he took one last sip of his beer before starting to get up. Even though laundry hadn’t been Ian’s responsibility for some time now it wouldn’t be hard for him to sort it out himself.

“Totally,” he nods his head and he smiles. “Kind of sounds like the perfect gig,” not for Patrick, someone who still doesn’t know which direction is North, or which way Downtown is (even despite the telling name) but for someone who has lived in Shrike Heights their whole life, someone like Ian, the idea fits. “Just wait until you reach my age,” he can’t help but chuckle as he says it; he admittedly can’t remember the exact difference between them, but Patrick would guess only a year or two. “Then you’ll realise that pizza for every me isn’t for everyone,” he laughs, and he shakes his head. “But actually, now that you’re talking about cutting costs, all that grease doesn’t sound so bad.”

“I was almost born in an auto shop,” he answers, another laugh following. “Which in itself is nothing to suggest that I’m good with cars, but I spent my whole life in that shop growing up, worked in it until I moved,” he almost tells Ian that the shop would have been his if he didn’t move away for college, but thinking too much about that part of his life isn’t the smartest idea, not when it’s so complicated, and not when he feels an obscene amount of guilt over the lies he still allows to be believed about the college education he never completed. “It’s in our blood; my whole family is really good with cars, Samantha and Michael, too.”

“Luckily for me grease is one of my basic food groups,” Ian joked. His diet consisted of quite a bit of junk that adding pizza several times a week wouldn’t have much consequence on the man who still relied on his active metabolism. That and he grew up dealing with his grandma’s consistent attempts at various diets over the years which only lead him to have an appreciation for diet sodas and nothing else considered “healthy”.  He figured he had a few good years ahead of him before he had to really worry about all the beer and greasy food he consumed to catch up to him. That meant lots of hypothetical time eating pizza if he did end up getting a job at Pizza Time. 

“Really?” Ian questioned. He didn’t know Patrick terribly well but he hadn’t struck him as a car guy from the conversations they’d had in the past. They’d really only ever talked about electronics considering Patrick’s current job. “Why don’t you get a job at the shop here in town? I hear they pay pretty good,” Ian suggested. People could actually make a career out of being a mechanic and if Ian had more skills with cars it was something he would’ve considered getting into. Anything that could keep a roof over his head and keep him away from the mall sounded like a good job to him so he didn’t see why Patrick took up a job at Radioshack instead when he apparently had the right skill set. “I’ll have to bug Sam next time my car’s acting up in the morning then,” he went on to joke. Considering she was his neighbor it would definitely save him some hassle.

                “ you are so fucking incredible , ” bo praised his partner . to say that he was in disbelief wasn’t particularly correct , as bo had always known how incredible ian was , but it was still a jarringly intense feeling he felt when experiencing it ; ian was amazing , and no matter how amazing he was so frequently with bo as the recipient , bo would never get used to it . “ this is so smart , baby , i already know that i’m gonna be using this all the damn time , this is so great , ” bo was so genuine in his words , something that could be heard in his tone and seen on his face as he spoke so enthusiastically and happily about his birthday present . “ thank you so much , gorgeous , ” he told him again . “ i’ve had such a great day , ” he confirmed with a nod , feeling even happier knowing that ian was glad that the day had gone well so far , too - bo knowing the situation well enough to understand why ian might have been desperately hoping for this day to go well , a result that could have easily been unobtainable after all the couple had been through . “ i love you so much , ian , ” his tone was even thicker with sincerity that time around , just as the kiss he reciprocated was . bo’s heart felt so full of joy - a feeling usually foreign to him on his birthday of all days - as they pulled away from each other , from kissing . “ sorry , ” bo began with a small laugh . “ i got a bit excited , huh ? ” he laughed , not having had expected the sex to happen so early in the day either , but having been unable to stop himself from initiating it . “ that sounds like the most perfect way to spend the day , sweet boy , ” bo nodded his head , a sweet little smile on his face . he hated to speak about why he felt so against celebrating his own birthday - hating to even properly process it all for himself - but he loved that ian knew exactly what he would want , and what he could handle on the day . he loved so much about ian ; he loved ian .  “ thank you , my love . ”

Ian didn’t feel incredible. He felt subpar really in the grand scheme of things. Even though Bo’s birthday was a sore subject for the man Ian had always done more for his partner than he had this year. Ian wished that he’d been able to go all out or at the very least go out and get Bo a proper present. With the mall in town it really felt silly that he’d given him a handmade gift when buying Bo something he’d really want was so easily at Ian’s fingertips that is if Ian could stomach going to the mall. He was still fearful of the place and that was why Ian had settled for the handmade birthday for Bo. Fortunately Bo didn’t show any signs in disliking what Ian did so he was able to bottle up the insecure feelings he felt around wishing he’d done more. Whether Bo liked it or not the day was all about him and Ian was making sure to keep that true today. “Hopefully I poked enough holes so that it’d be useful. I know you like to use a lot of colors,” Ian went on. After all it took a rainbow to celebrate Bo and that was certainly reflected in his art. Ian wasn’t ashamed that they had sex so early in the day. He’d take Bo whenever he wanted him especially on his birthday. “Hey, it’s your day. You can have me whenever you want,” Ian promised him. With it being so early in the day it wasn’t out of the question that Ian might have another round in him later in the day if the mood struck again. “I just want the best guy ever to have the best day ever,” he insisted as he remained close to Bo’s side. Whatever made Bo happy would be their plan today and everyday if Ian had any say in the matter. Making Bo feel good and appreciated was Ian’s main directive when it came to being Bo’s partner and Ian hoped that was felt by Bo on all occasions.

"i definitely believe in your ability," she tells him with a smile. honey has heard too many nice things about ian from her sibling leaf to know that he's an extremely capable person, though even if she hadn't known a single thing about the man, and was meeting him for the very first time today, honey would encourage him all the same; even if she happened to be speaking with someone who had little to no baking skills, the only way to improve is to practice! "our strawberries aren't quite in season yet," she tells him and she shakes her head. "but that's why i find these so perfect coming into the hotter months; we can still enjoy the summer flavors before it's time to start picking our strawberries," she's not saying this to boost her jam sales, but instead because she genuinely believes in what she's saying. "they're almost ready," she adds happily. "i think i always have to choose the gooseberry and elderflower jam that we make, but it really is quite a difficult choice, to pick a favorite," she answers. "they're all so different, and perfect for different uses!"

"That's a shame. Strawberries are one of my favorite fruits," Ian answered. He couldn't recall seeing any strawberries in the grocery store last time he went so it made sense that the commune didn't have any either. "It's a good thing you guys preserve so many," Ian agreed. Jam wasn't as good as a fresh picked strawberry but it worked in a pinch for him to get in the flavor he loved so much. "Gooseberry and elderflower?" Ian questioned out loud. "I don't think I've had either of those," he admitted. Truthfully he didn't branch out very much when it came to his jam preferences. After mulling over the samples he'd tried Ian finally had come to a decision on what jam he'd be getting. "I think today I'm just going to pick up some more strawberry jam," he explained as he reached for one of the jars on the table. "How much do I owe you?" Ian asked as he dug into his pocket to pull out some of the money he'd set aside to spend on this trip to the farmer's market.

               “ you’re so stinkin’ cute , ” bo told him , positively beaming in ian’s direction . it meant so much to bo that ian went along with the spontaneous plans and the silly idea of there being a competition between the two of them ; while bo was usually the one being silly and playful , ian was completely embracing bo’s energy while participating in the activity , and bo couldn’t have felt more lucky . “ good luck baby , ” he told him , knowing that the competition would likely be quickly forgotten shortly after it was completed , but honestly starting to root for his partner to win . “ you’re making it real hard for me to stay put , you know , ” he warned ian through happy laughter . “ keep talking so sweet and i’ll be forgetting the competition so that i can just go over there and smooch you a whole bunch , ” he blew a few kisses to ian to make up for the lack of physical affection . “ you’ve always been my favourite too , sweet boy , ” a fact that would take no one by surprise . “ oh yeah ? ” bo could definitely see there being time for ian to nap , perhaps when bo was busy decorating the halloween candy box , but his mind couldn’t help but stray slightly off topic . “ tire me out and i might even nap with you , ” he offered suggestively . 

Ian definitely would need luck on his side if he was to win this competition. Just thinking about the pumpkins they’d already carved this year he knew his didn’t hold a candle to the ones that Bo had crafted. Fortunately the consolation prize was good enough that Ian wasn’t terribly worried about losing even though he was putting his best effort forward. “You know I wouldn’t be disappointed if you decided to forfeit,” Ian smiled at Bo from across the table as he gently kicked his shin teasingly. Kissing Bo was always one of Ian’s favorite activities and he’d certainly sacrifice Bo seeing his design to acquire some smooches. Besides the bat he was poking into the pumpkin wasn’t coming out nearly as good as the one in the picture he was referencing. “Oh yeah? Doesn’t that depend on whether or not I win this pumpkin carving contest?” Ian asked back. He assumed whatever prize Bo had in mind would be something sexual considering he’d get a blowjob if he lost. The only thing better than a blowjob from Bo was sex with Bo.

rōnin wasn’t serious about his inquiry in bo starting a dog walking business, so it made him laugh when ian answered and made him picture the idea as a reality even more - even though ian as good as rejected the idea. “yeah, that makes sense.” he nodded. “and i bet it’s different when it’s not even your own dog; i feel like people are way more forgiving when it’s their own dogs, so it probably wouldn’t be that exciting to actually run a business like that,” he suggested, yet he didn’t have the most experience to warrant his opinion on it. “i’ve met some dogs who are pretty afraid of haircuts, or even just baths,” he told ian. “i don’t know everything about dogs either, though,” he shrugged, meaning that ian didn’t have to take his word. “yeah, i wouldn’t be hissing or scratching much if i had such a nice home,” he laughed, more meaning if he had such a nice family, but he was making light of it all with a joke to avoid actually making such a comment. “but that’s why i’m extra glad to hear that the nice little guy is here, and that he hasn’t gotten away,” he returned to the initial reason for his visit.

“Yeah, and we’re never going to get a dog,” Ian explained. The couple hadn’t even been meant to have a cat but Stinky had stumbled into their lap and Ian hadn’t had the heart to kick the little guy out after Bo instantly bonded with him. Ian did draw the line at a dog though and since they had Stinky now he had even more reason to put his foot down on the subject not that getting a dog ever really came up in conversation. They had plenty of friends with dogs that Bo could spend time with if he wanted. “That’s another thing I like about cats. You don’t have to worry about giving them a haircut or giving them baths. We’ve only given Stinky one bath before and that was back when we got him because he was all covered in garbage,” Ian explained. The kitten had been fine with the event but that was likely because he was still too young to really know what was going on with him. “I appreciate you coming and checking up on him. We’re pretty good about making sure he stays inside but still,” Ian said. It was heartwarming knowing that others were looking out for the cat. “Hopefully you didn’t catch any bad luck having a black cat cross your path,” Ian joked. Having lived with a black cat for some time now he didn’t believe in the superstition anymore. Shrike felt like a pretty unlucky place but Ian didn’t blame it on the black cat population in town.  There had to be a stronger dark presence in town to account for everything that went on.

               ian was a good partner ; it had never been a secret , never been unknown to bo , but somehow , even after all of this time , it was something that always took him so joyously by surprise . bo was so lucky to have ian . they spent a lot of evenings dating each other at home , with the greasy grub that ian was so fond of , but no matter how much bo loved those evenings , too , ian making sure that bo still got his chance to shine somewhere classier in town was so perfectly ian of him to do . ian had always been considerate of their differences , he’d always accommodated bo’s extravagance , and those thoughts were at the front of bo’s mind as their date took them to such a fine place . bo would be content with ian anywhere , doing anything , but he didn’t need to worry about that , as he knew ian would always go out of his way to work towards the most perfect outings , occasions , and celebrations of their love . 

“ i have no idea , baby , ” bo answered , excitement in his tone as his eyes began scanning the menu . “ they have so many really nice things here , it’s so hard to decide , ” bo went on , eyes flickering back up to ian - a habit of bo’s ; he’d never been able to take his eyes off of the gorgeous brunet that he was now lucky enough to call his fiancé . “ thank you so much , sweet boy , ” ian’s generosity was always received with much appreciation , it was so special ; even though ian had grown up the less affluent of the pair , his desire to treat bo oftentimes made bo feel like ian had never known financial struggles - and the fact that he had experienced having less money only made his willingness to spend every cent of his on bo all the more meaningful . “ i would love to split a bottle of wine with you , ” he nodded . for some reason , bo had always associated wine with romance , and it made their date feel all the more romantic . as if he wasn’t already living in the moment , and enjoying the moment , bo found himself looking forward to the rest of the date to come . his eyes finally retreated from his favourite view to back down to the menu ; he weighed up his options , but the undeniable winner almost immediately stood out to him . “ i’m honestly kind of thinking the steak , ” he suggested to ian . “ i know they cook it real good here , ” ian would always be the best chef in shrike in bo’s eyes , but excluding ian , bo knew that all of the best chefs could be found at the aviary - or so most people would say . 

“Let’s go with a red,” Ian decided for them when speaking about the wine. He really didn’t have much of a preference when it came to wine but red always seemed more romantic in Ian’s mind and was what they often drank at home the few times they decided to spice up a meal with it. Hearing Bo wanted the steak Ian’s eyes quickly found the option on the menu and he couldn’t help but check the price. The steak was one of the more expensive options on the menu but Ian tried hard not to think about that. He’d saved up his money and made sure he had enough that whatever Bo ordered he’d be able to cover. “Yeah, we’ll definitely go with the red wine then if you’re getting steak. I heard that they pair well together,” Ian commented instead of voicing any worries about the price. Ian went back to looking over the menu again for himself before he settled on his choice. “I think I’ll go with the chicken,” he decided before finally setting the menu down now that he’d come to a decision. 

While they waited for their server to be by to take their order Ian reached his hand across the table to take Bo’s hand in his. They didn’t often share much PDA but Ian didn’t fear the reaction of anyone in the establishment. Ian doubted his grandmother had ever even stepped foot in this place and at the age he was now she was the only person Ian feared catching him being intimately involved with Bo. “You look very handsome tonight,” Ian informed Bo as he ran his thumb against Bo’s knuckles. Bo always looked good but Ian knew that Bo had spent a lot more time on his appearance tonight than usual as he’d spent the greater part of an hour waiting around as Bo got ready this evening and he knew it was a good idea to compliment his efforts.
