did you know the last of us fungus is real?
this mushroom, called the cordyceps, infects bugs like ants, worms, spiders, and more and relies on those bugs to spread its spores. it infects the bugs by slowly draining the nutrients out of the body and replacing the nutrients with its own spores. the bugs then go and climb up to areas with the right climate needed for the mushroom to grow, and it spreads its spores and reproduces.
but don't worry, this mushroom-parasite is too weak to control humans or turn them into zombies. but, the fungus in the game/series the last of us is inspired by the real-life cordyceps!
