Yuuma cracked a bit of a smile, nodding.
"Cool." He almost flinched a bit at the nickname. Uma-chan? His name was Yuuma… Oh well. He figured maybe it was just this guy’s way of speaking. He swallowed.
"I don’t know specifics." He paused. "Just that she went to the hospital." He neglected to mention the card and balloon he sent; the fisherman figured that was unnecessary.
" I getcha. yeah…well she’s lookin much better now and should be out soon ya know?" Wasu said with a big grin. " Did you visit her yet?"
Yuuma nodded slowly. Much better. She’ll be out soon.
"Good." He paused a bit, silent, after his next question. Yuuma didn’t visit her. IN fact, he never really… Visited anyone. He shook his head.
"Not the visiting type." He fiddled with the ends of his sleeves. "But it’s good to know she’s better."
" hmm~? Not the visiting type you say? Well that seems all the more reason to visit. I mean you’d show you were willing to go outside your comfort zone right? but that’s just my opinion mind do." Wasu said with a small smirk. " Well I’m sure she’ll be just as happy to see you alright when she gets back ya know? so who else do you know? maybe we have alot of people in common."
Yuuma squinted a bit, not quite following his logic. He shook his head lightly.
"I don't think so." Maybe it seemed a bit blunt, but he knew Mayumi would understand. Or... At least, Yuuma hoped so. It wasn't that easy, Yuuma thought. If he could flip a switch and suddenly want to go out, he would.
Yuuma nodded. "Yeah. I hope so." He bit his lip a bit. Who else did he know?
"Um... I dunno. A bunch of people. But I know them more as acquaintances." He paused. "Uh... Oh, Liesel. She's another friend."

"Mm," Yuuma responded, nodding slowly. So, he knew Mayumi too? He supposed it was nice that they had a mutual friend. Yuuma reached up behind his hood to scratch his head a bit. Mayumi hadn’t really ever gotten on Yuuma’s case to study. He was usually pretty diligent about studying, after all, being that there wasn’t much else for him to do. Yuuma, staring at the book cover still, only barely caught Wasu’s expression changes through short glances, unable to maintain full eye contact.
"Yuuma," he replied, swallowing and shifting a bit.
"It’s… Nice to meet you." Yuuma began playing with the corners of the book cover.
"So… You know Mayumi?"
" Indeed I do know Mayumi-chan!" He said with a surprised look in his eyes but a smile on his face. He was glad he’d found someone to chat with who knew Mayumi but did he know her current situation. " So Uma-chan you know about what happened with Mayumi right?"
Yuuma cracked a bit of a smile, nodding.

Yuuma instinctually shifted away from the boy as he intruded on the fisherman’s space, nervously glancing at him. He wanted to know what book he was reading, that was it. Yuuma opened his mouth to speak before clearing his throat quietly, nodding.
"Anna Karenina." He slowly placed his bookmark where he was, adjusting it to be at the line he was at before closing it carefully.
"I like it."
" Anna…Karenina? I haven’t heard of that one ya know?" Wasu said as he sat next to the boy. " What ya like about it?" Wasu asked in a way as if they talked all the time. " Is there something that just sparks your interest in it? or is the whole thing good?"
Yuuma pondered his question, looking back at the cover of the book before biting a bit at his slightly chapped lips. He shrugged a bit.
"I… think it’s just Tolstoy’s style. And, um, realism in general." Yuuma paused before shifting a bit.
"Do… You read much?" he asked, hoping not to come off sounding assuming.
" Hmm I read when it suits me ya know? I tend to like to talk with people more though. find out about their lives and such. Though Mayumi would probably get on my case about studying if I said that around her or something like that." He said laughing at the thought. before looking sad for a moment…and then quickly smiling again. " I’m Wasu by the way! sorry I forgot to introduce myself earlier. and you might you be?"

He was there every day, it seemed. Just sitting on a bench, scooted all the way to one end, knees to his chest, nose in a book. It always seemed to be a different book, and it was always confusing why he was outside. It was cold, wasn’t it? So why would he subject himself to that, just to read? Small puffs of mist were the only indication of life from the boy as he sat, never moving more than a little bit only to adjust his position. His hood was up, so it was difficult to tell who it was.
Yuuma was fine with this. He still didn’t really know anybody. Of course there were a few people who he had spoken to once or twice, but nobody he would consider ‘friends’ by now. Well, there was Mayumi, but he wasn’t sure if she had gotten out of the hospital yet. He turned a page.
This was how he wanted it, wasn’t it? This was what he envisioned for himself, after all. Being outdoors and reading alone. It was what he did back home for all his life. Why should he change that now? The prospect of hope at Hope’s Peak… Well, it was still a little bit comforting. At least people didn’t really talk about him or anything. He turned a page, eyes glancing up to notice someone else, not looking long enough to really identify features; just enough to know that someone else was near him. This was a bit new. He didn’t acknowledge them, however, instead delving back into his book. If they wanted to speak to him, they would speak.
Wasu was wandering about the schoolgrounds as he often did. He was hoping to find something to distract him from his own thoughts. Thats when he spotted him. a young man with a book. All by himself. That certainly wasn’t what you should be like at school right? Wasu walked up to the boy and waited for a bit for him to say something however he seemed to either ignore his presence or be engrossed in his book. Wasu leaned down and looked at the book saying. ” Hmmm~ what book’s got you so wrapped up ya know?”

Mayumi received a small balloon, simple but clear with "Get well soon!" written across its surface. Tied to it was a note in an envelope only labeled "Mayumi." "I hope you get well soon. I don't know what happened, but I figured sending a note would be a good thing to do. You've been a great friend to me, so thanks. -Yuuma." Nobody saw the boy deliver it; it seemed to find its way outside her door while nobody was looking.
It took a while before Mayumi’s mother noticed the balloon, taking it and sniffling slightly before she brought it into Mayumi’s room. Carefully, she tied it to the bed frame, leaving the note on the side table for her to find later.
Maybe it was just imagination that said that she looked a little calmer…?
