This image also has the came dark and light contrast that the image before had, to me this works out well as it is more contemporary look to the image. The photographer has use a mid range aperture, as a majority of the image is in focus. i like that the way that they have composed this image by having the focus on the hairdressers hands which is showing what they do daily. This way that the photographer has intentionally or not composed the hair, comb and scissors to all be vertical in the image adds balance and keeps the darker subjects in a line, in contrast to the white walls and the hands.
Image Two
This image to me was a good representation of a still life showing a hairdressing salon. I like the photographers use of depth of field in this image, i feel that this makes the subject matter stand against the background and making it clear what the business may be. The use of lighting that has been used in this image has been a contestant light with flash due to the reflections that can be seen in the scissors. the contrast of the dark and light in this image creates a balance and makes the subject matter stand out more.
Image Three
This image caught my attention as it was a very clean image with a good contrast between the black and white. i like the photographers use of depth of field in this image as it it keeps the main focus on the task at hand but having the hairdresser in the background to add another person into without taking away from the work. This image has been backlit which you can see as the background has been blown out which has kind of made the hairdressers are seem blown out not look proper. But minus this issue the use of black and white in this image is something that i can hope to bring to my own images.
Image Four
This image looks as though it has been hit using soft constant lighting. This can be seen in the reflection of the shower head. This image is another very monochromatic image, as this reflects the location that i am going to be photographing. The photographer has used a mid aperture as the model is in focus but the background has a slightly shallow depth of field. These very muted tones of the image create a relaxed environment and reflect how the model feels within the situation.
Image Five
This image is a low key image that has a range of colours that appear through out it. The photographer has used a small aperture in this image to create a shallow depth of field to create this interesting shot. The way that the photographer has taken this image by taking the image in the mirror give a sense of space within the location as well as showing the detail of the hairdresser working. This image is something that i was drawn to due to the different composition and different style that creates more depth and focusing on different details of the business, although it does make it look busy.
Image Six
This image is something that i am using a reference point for my portrait as this has been taken using a shallow depth of field which allows you to see the entire location which is something that i would like to achieve in my image. This image looks as though it may have been lit using a flash or studio lighting as you can see the reflection in the models eyes, which gives me this impression. The image also have a very contrast colour palette with the monochromatic look to it much like many of the other images that i looked into but this reflects the location i would be photographing.
People at Work Evaluation
For this project I decided to shot in my local hairdressing salon as this was somewhere local that I could repeatedly go back to as well as fitting into the time frame that I had to shot this project.
I inertially did a recce of the location and asked questions to find out more about the business so that I could take into consideration what sort of things that the manger thought represented her shop, as it was recently renovated. I took some images to give a general idea of what I would like to carry out for my images. I decided to have 7 images on my canvas in order to create balance as I didn't have another landscape image i felt stood out and fit with these images. For my images I went back on a different day in order to get the portrait as I wasn't happy with he initial image that i had taken as I didn't use flash, and it didn't pop. On the second occasion i decided to use the flash, but this was something that I was didn't feel comfortable using yet so I plan to work on this skill.
I made the decision to convert the images to black and white since this reflected the look of the building as well as the theme of the interior of the location. I also decided to do this due to the minimalistic look that is within the location and i wanted this to appear within my images. I decided to focus on one area that the salon provides and that is hair cutting as it is something that i knew i could photograph easily as well as it is the most common thing to see. This was a set up at a time that the store was empty which allowed to control the scene of what the hairdresser was doing without having to concern customers. I also included some still life shots in the image as i feel these are things that reflect and styling or the salon as well as the feel that they want to promote within the space. I did a brief overview of the interior of the location which was something that i found difficult as it was a small place to shot within and didn't have a lot of room to manoeuvre to get a good pan of the salon.
If i was to reshot this i would try to use a more wide angle lens in order to capture more of the salon in the one shot, i would also try out different ways of lighting the portrait as i feel like this could do with more work. Overall i am happy with the final outcome of this project as it is something that i have never experienced before and helped me push my boundaries.

This image was something that I had many issues when trying to shoot as this wasn’t something that I was confident in doing.
In this image I decided to use different ways to light the image using torches and my LED light in order to paint with light as well as create light trails. For this image I decided to shot in the woods local to me in order to be able to stay here till later as there wasn’t much travel involved in getting there. I tried out various different ideas before I managed to create this image which is was the last attempt that I wanted to make in this area. I decided to light the ground and by painting the light across the foreground of the image and fallen tree, and then created a light trail using my torch to another layer to the image. I did this a HDR image as it allowed me time to do both sections of the image individually. I In the background of my image I also captured a light trail of a car passing by which i feel adds to the image. This image didn't go plan as i wanted as many things had to be changed in order to make it work, but i feel that got a successful image in the end. If i was to do this again i would try using different light sources or a different location. This is something that i would like to work on more.

I was first drawn to this image due to the contrast in colours of the sky and the grass. The photographer has lit this in a way that instantly draws me into the image as it has such a rich use of colour which is very eye catching and stands out to the viewer. i like that the photographer has split the image using the wall to create a split with light and dark. By doing this it draws more attention to the area that has been lit which is the focal point of the image.
Image Two
I was drawn to this image as it has more autumn tones to the image unlike the rest which seem to be more green and summery. I think that the photographer has used the lighting in this image in order to best showcase the colours that are in this mage which bring out the tones well. This image has a black background which gives me the impression that the photographer has used a wide aperture on these as the focus goes all the way back and the light is filling up the foreground of the image. This image has a very atmospheric feel to the image which is something that makes me more intrigued by it.
Image Three
This image stands out to me out to me because of the way that the image has been lit. The photographer has framed the main focal point of the image with the way that the trees are surrounding the the bridge which draws the viewer into the image. This adds an extra dimension to the image, which shows that photographer has taken in consideration the location that he is shooting in. The contrast between the light and the dark areas of this image make the trees and the bridge stand out.

This photographer in this image has used a gradual use of light, by keeping what is further from the camera brightest and what is closer darker. This would likely be necessary in order to use a long exposure without the light becoming overexposed. By doing this the photographer is drawing the viewer into the image, creating the focal point at the end of the pathway. The subtle use of the light that appears on the trees up the pathway, adds a little more detail to the image which shows the consideration that the photographer has taken when shooting this.
Image Two
This image was the one that I was first drawn to due to the colour tone of the image. The lighting that the photographer has used in this image are more cooler tones to the image in comparison to the street lights that are in the background of the image. I feel like this makes the tree stand out more as it is in the different shade, as well has having a shallow depth of field having being used in the image which separates the subject from the background. The photographer seems to have used a faster shutter speed in this image due to the ambient lighting in the background as well with the use of a shallow depth of field which allows more light into the image.
Image Three
This image caught my attention due to the way that the photographer has created the pool of light in the centre of the image which has created a nice focal point of the image. this image has a very dark and atmospheric mood to the image which I feel makes the image more attractive to me as it is the type of images that i am drawn to. It seems like the photographer has used a slow shutter speed in order to create this look as it has a narrow depth of field from camera to background. The way that the photographer has framed the image using the foliage of the tree adds to the image and creates a frame of the light, inviting the viewer to the image drawing to the focal point
Image Four
This image has a nice tonal to it as the sky isn't dark in this image as it tends to be in the rest of this work, which makes me think that this is part of his summer collection of images. The photographer has thought about where he is positioning in this image in order to have the pool of light in the centre of the image as well as hitting the trees and coming from within them. This makes me think that he took a lot of time considering where he wanted the light to come from and positioning them in the right angle.
The Use of Perspective Control
Throughout the processing of my images I tried out the various different ways that you can correct the perspective in Photoshop. One of the most successful ways that I found was in Camera Raw, using the lens correction, which allowed me have some way of correcting distortion created by using a wide angle lens.
I found that this was one of the simpler ways of correcting issues with the perspective in my image as it allowed me to edit the distortion as well as the horizontal and vertical tilt on the image, which was something, that came in useful in the image above as it was such a high ceiling within the cathedral this allowed me to create a more eye level image. This also allows you to change the scale and aspect ratio of the image, which I liked, since it allowed me to take away or add some of the height to these larger structures that may be lost when shooting.
In conjunction with this I also used the perspective crop tool on Photoshop as well for any area that’s needed straightening and to double check that the lines were straight. This I find is a little bit more difficult to use. This is due to the not having complete control over it.

This image caught my attention due to the lighting that has been used in the image. The use of colour is something that really strikes me about this image as it has very dark background with pops of primary colours throughout it making the most important parts of the image stand out. The photographer has use a light coming in from the left of the image brining light to the front of the model as well as brighting the scene up. The use of the red light adds a sense of danger to the image which reflects the nature of the work that this person is doing. The way that the subject is looking away from the camera is making the viewer interested in whats happening off camera.
People At Work Research

This image stood out to me from the background colours. This image has a good composition that draws the viewer into the image. This is due to the way that subject has been placed of the right of the image which is different that than the usual centring of the subject. The way that the photographer has used the sign leading into the centre of the image is interesting as this is a key feature of the image as it is showing what this man does. the photographer has used a shallow depth of field in this image in order to separate the subject from the background. The image has very muted tones to with only the background being lighter in the image. The photographer has used lighting coming in from right of the subject, as this is where the most light in the image as well as the reflections of the light can be seen, they have also likely used a fill light on the left in order to fill in any shadows.
Little Things Evaluation
My concept for little things was to take in the vibrant colours that can be seen on the artistic subjects within our campus.
For these images I looked into the different floors such as, Model Making and Print Making floors, this is due the interesting supplies and machinery that is located on these floors. We did various recce’s of the floors in order to gain a theme for my images. The theme that I picked for my images was contrasting paint colours. For this I decided to look at the different ways in which paint has been used in the workspaces as well how it has affected them.
One of the first things that caught my attention was the various different paint palettes that had been used by students, many of which were on scrap foam and card which created interesting textures. Another things that stood out to me was the used, dried up paint tubes that had been left in various parts of the room by students, who either no longer needed it or were storing as a reference for what they had used in their work. The final thing that caught my attention was the work station within in the screen printing floor as these have seen many years of work done on them which can be seen with the paint splatter which is covering them.
The research that I carried out for this was looking into various on location and studio lighting set ups that reflected the nature of the concept. I looked into various stock images as these tend to have a wide range of images that fit any subject matter as well have studio and location images. For these I also decided to look into using different lighting sources.
Paint Palette
This image was taken from an above angle against the paint in order to gain some texture, and show the 3D look to the image. This is created by the way that the paint has dried as well as the material that has been used in order to create the palette. For this image I decided use my LED light, in order to light the image. I did this on a medium setting on the 540k power source in order to gain a white light as opposed to an orange light. I positioned the light to the side of the palette in order to try and gain the light going across the paint in order to to gain more texture. This image has a really good use of colour as it has striking colours, as well as very contrasty colours which make it stand out more against the rest of the images and creates a good focal point on the canvas. The focal point of this image is the section in which the colours have mixed together which draws the viewer in to the image as the colours are no longer separate. The composition that I used in this was putting the barrier of the two colours in the middle of the image in order to show the split for the colours, as if it was was putting the image in half, in a more natural way.
Paint Tube
This image was taken on location in the Print Making studios. I shot this image using on camera flash as this was the best suited for the look that I wanted to go for. In this image I used a shallow depth of field to keep the main focus on the on the cap of the paint tube. The colours in this image again are contrasty, as this has the darker tones in the front of the image and the lighter bringer tones in the back. This creates the eyes to be drawn into the background as it has more striking colours but then it brings you to the main part of the image which is the tube of paint. The composition that I decided upon for this image was to have the paint tube in the foreground of the image as i liked the darker tones of this, against the white background and bright colours, which added more depth to the image and with the shallow depth of field it makes it pop more. For this image I used a speed light on the camera as I wanted to use harsh lighting throughout my image in order to bring out more of the details within the cap of the image as well as the background.
Screen Printing Clamp
This image was once again taken on location in the Print Making Studios. I shot this image using a camera flash, as this was best suited for the look that I was going for. I used a speed light upon the camera as I wanted a harsh lighting which is a look I was going for throughout my images. The key point in my image was the paint splatter that is covering the clamp, as this is what was relating my images together. The composition of this image was to keep the subject in the centre of the image as it is the only thing in the frame. The way that the light has hit the clamp has separated it from the background making it the main focus of the image and making the background darker. This is another thing that linked my images together was the darker tones to them.

Cross Polarisation Evaluation
Research
Research that I carried out for this technique I looked into what cross polarisation and what it is used for as well as what sort of items that can be used in for the cross polarisation. I also researched how this process happens with the different colours of plastic. I also looked into what are the best settings are for photographing this technique.
For this image I wanted to see what different types of plastic look like under polarising filters as well as see what types of plastics are typically stronger. In this image I wanted to create something that have interesting shapes as well as have a range of colours within it.
Equipment
For this technique I only used basic equipment of my camera as well as the polarising filters. For this I used various different types of plastic that I could use in order to create something interesting.
Post Production
For postproduction on these images I decided to pick my top three images that I created, as there wasn’t as many images done in this technique. I did minor editing to these images just cleaning them up and some adjustments. Like my other images I put all my options onto a canvas to allow me to compare them as well as fit them with my other images to allow me to pick the three images from all of the techniques that showcase what I wanted to achieve within this project.
Evaluation
For this technique I achieved what I what I wanted to do by creating an image with a range of colours from the different polarisation and strength within the image. Feedback that I gained on this was that I have a well-composed image with a range of colours as well as fulfilling the brief. If I were to reshoot this I would probably pick a more interesting subject matter and make it more creative so that it seems more interesting. I would also consider using a tripod to allow for more stabilisation within shooting my image, which would allow me to have more control when shooting my image, and allow a similar angle of video. When I first took this image I was testing out what different plastics looked like but this created something interesting pattern and silhouette effect to the image, which shows the shape of the subject, which is something different. I like the composition of this image as I have the subject going through the centre of the image, which is instantly drawing the viewer straight into the image. This was interesting to shot as the filters can create a high key image or a low key image depending on way you shot it.
Infrared Evaluation
Research
My research for my infrared image was looking into the different equipment that maybe needed in order to carry out this technique, such as using specialised cameras, needs longer exposures in order to let more light into the sensor. It also creates dark landscapes look darker with the lighter tones are the natural elements. Research for the postproduction that I did for this was the different ways in which you can convert your images to either black and white or turning the sky blue in the image.
For my infrared image I decide to wait until there was a nice sunny day to go and shoot for this and find a location that I was interested in shooting in. For this image I knew I wanted a location that had a lot of nature in it as well as having manmade objects in it to give it a balance.
Equipment
The equipment that I used for this project was a IR camera as well as normal DSLR in order to take a control shot to compare my images to. The IR cameras were simple enough to use as they have the same layout as the DSLRs the only difference was remembering that the images came out as red when taken. This was one if the techniques that I hadn’t tried prior to this project. This is a technique that I would like to do again as it is something that creates more dynamic landscapes.
Location
When picking my location I wanted something that would have a good range of different landscapes that I could go for as well as man made objects that would create some balance within my images. I also had to factor in where the people in my group may have wanted to take their images.
The location that was decided upon was going to Glasgow Necropolis, as there is a mixture of nature as well as manmade subject matter that would work well within my images as well as it is local to the college.
On Location
When I got to the location I spent some time searching for what I wanted to create for my image. I took a couple of control shots at varies areas of the location while my group had their turn with the camera as this let me see what I really wanted for my image. I decided to take various images of different subject matter as I was curious of different things may appear when converted to infrared.
Postproduction
In postproduction I decided to edit various different photos to give me a choice of images that I could choice from as well as see how each image may look and see what may fit the brief the best. For my images I decided to keep them within the blue hues as I feel that this was more striking and interesting for my images and reflected my well. For this image I feel as though my postproduction worked well although I do wish that I tried more ways in order to see what suits the image best. If it came to shooting in this style again I would try to look at more examples of infrared photography as well as postproduction techniques that I could try on my images.
Evaluation
I have achieved what I set out to for this image, which was to create an infrared landscape image and convert the image with an interesting colour range. The feedback I received from my peers on my image was that it showed a good amount of natural subject matter, which created the nice white tones to the image, as well as the overall subject matter created an interesting image.
If I was to reshoot this image I would choose to use a tripod which would allow me to use longer exposure times in order to let more light hit the sensor. I would also try to vary the subject matter and get more of the landscape in the images. The composition of my images could have been better but I feel as though this links back to the use of a tripod, as this would allow me to find a better angle for the image. In this image I didn’t use a tripod, as it was something that I seen when I was leaving the location and I wanted to snap a photo to see what it may look like in comparison to my other images. In this image I decided to use a shallow depth of field, as I wanted the main focus of the image to be on the trees in the background as these were the most interesting part of the image in my opinion. I used the wall as a leading line in my image as it is darker than the rest of the image so it draws you into the image and brings the viewer to the main focal point of the image. I took this image at eye level, as I wanted to get the sky, as well as the trees and foreground in the image, this was also possible as I took the image at a wider angle as it was able to capture what I wanted in the frame.
High Speed Flash Evaluation
Research
Research that I carried out for this technique was looking into how the flash can control the flash. I also looked into the different uses of High Speed Flash from, freezing the movement of dancers, water droplets and the use of powder. I also researched the equipment that would be required in order to carry out this technique such as using a tripod in order to keep the camera in the same place for all the images, as well as using manual focus in order to find the focal point of the image is. I also looked into different liquids that I could use in my images.
For my high-speed flash image I wanted to capture water droplets falling as well as hitting the surface. For this image I did some shots in class but I wanted to experiment some more so I decided to do more images in my house to allow myself to get more practise and perhaps try out more ideas. This also allowed me to speed a lot of time focusing on finding what sort of look I wanted to go for in my image.
Equipment
The equipment that I used for this was a tripod to keep the camera at the right angle so that the photo is taking at the same angle for every time. I also used a flash unit on top of the camera in order to freeze the motion. I also used food colouring and glycerine, which I added to water which made it thicker and allowed me more time in order to catch the droplets that I put in a piping bag which allowed me to have control over the water.
Process
For my image I tried dripping my water onto various surfaces such as plastic table top, into more water and various other surfaces as well as catching the water droplets falling from the bag as this caught the water before it hit the surface. I also used various colours of food dye in order to see to see what stood out the most against the background and what created the most striking image. I also tried using difference substances but for me water was the most effective.
Post Production
In postproduction I picked various images from the different ideas that I tried out and edited them to see what image created the look I was going for, but this also gave a choice of what image I may choice for my final prints as well as picking something that looked good in comparison to the rest of images that I have created for this brief. I also did very little editing to these images; just minor adjustments and cleaning up the backgrounds.
Evaluation
I have achieved what I set out to using this image, which was to capture water droplets falling. The feedback that I received about this image was that I created was that the balance of colours in the image is interesting as I kept the colours muted. If I were to reshoot this image I would consider using a different lens for this so that I could get closer the subject as well as get a better focus on something so small. I would also have more flash units in order make the image brighter as well as have more power. I would also consider using a different method dropping the water droplets, which allows the water to have a lot more control over when the water is dropped. In this image the master Speedlight was set to 1/64 in order to capture the motion of the water droplet falling this was successful as it captured every droplet differently depending when the shutter was pressed. The use of the shallow depth of field meant that the there was enough light entering the image as well as keeping the focus on where the water is dropping which is what the most important part of the image is. I took this image at a 45-degree angle, on a tripod in order to keep the camera the same angle for all the images. I am happy with the composition of this image as it can be hard to judge exactly where the water droplets may fall but I feel like I have timed this well. I also think that the pattern that it has be created is interesting as it is showing the phase of the droplet falling and adding more height of to the image.
