I find you tedious, Sideswipe grouched internally. He wanted nothing more than to dart off into the trees, leaving Fix-It all alone - and it was better that way; Sideswipe knew he needed to be nicer to the Minicon, but when did that ever happen? - instead, he gave an exasperated roll of his optics, sighing heavily. “Fine, I’ll try to stop since it’s obviously such a big deal. Although I don’t see why you guys are so sensitive about it; it’s just a ‘term of endearment’, as Bumblebee would say.”

Two could play at that game.

“Anyway, was that all you wanted? Or do you need me to reach something off the top shelf for you?”

Megatronus growled in anger as he saw who it was that had crossed into his path.

“I seem to recall a certain bot with a red paint job the day I was defeated by my brother and his underlings. You wouldn’t happen to be the same one right?”

Sideswipe thought he had been alone in the woods... he’d just wanted a quiet place to think. But at the sound of the disgraced Prime’s voice, Sideswipe forgot all about moping, his plating instinctively clamping down around his protoform as he began looking about for a good escape route. There was no way he was going to even attempt fighting Megatronus all by himself - that was a level of stupid that even he could recognise.

“M-me?” he asked, feigning innocence as he began to shuffle backwards, away from the bigger mech, “You - you’ve got the wrong guy. I mean, you obviously must be thinking of some other handsome sports-car.”

After a moment, he deflated slightly. “Okay, okay. Grimlock put me up to this,” he admitted.

Not that he hadn’t wanted to give it a try, for his own personal reasons.

“So, did I make an idiot of myself?” he asked, face pulled up in a sheepish grimace.

   Grimlock put him up to this? She…actually didn’t have too hard a time believing that, though she didn’t think it was the entire reason behind his ‘flirting.’ Still, her confusion slowly turned into an ornery grin.

   “That depends… Are you functioning?”

   “Because if you are, then yes, you made an idiot of yourself~”

“Well, you know, at least I can’t fall any further, right?” There was no saving this conversation, but Sideswipe was bound and determined to at least try. “Um, I can’t fall like you fell - uh, from the Allspa-- heaven. Fell from heaven.”

What came next? Something about band-aids and skinned knees... How did Grimlock know so many human pick-up lines, anyway?

Snickers some her little claws locked to each other. “Oh my gosh you sound like a little sparkling.” she giggled again and placed her head on his shoulder. “Sit down before I accidentally strangle you from all your thrashing. Yeesh…” she purred some and wagged her tail. “Sit!” she huffed.

He gasped at the tiny voice in his audial, slowly registering the negligible weight of his assailant. This was not some Decepticon grunt...

“I will not sit,” he snapped, irritated at having been frightened by someone so small, and still in bad spirits from his interrupted moping. He reached back in an attempt to grab the little ‘bot around her middle. “Now, you better tell me who you are, or...!!!”

Ears pricked up she tilted her helm some. Curious, he wasn’t like the others. She jumped down and snuck right over to see what he was drawing. Tail wiggling some as her ears flicked. Unobtrusive and probably wouldn’t be noticed unless a bot was alert.

‘Alert’ was not at all the right word to describe Sideswipe at that moment. He was still wallowing in guilt (and a small amount of self-pity if he was honest with himself). A sigh escaped him as he leaned forward to scratch another meaningless symbol into the dirt, completely oblivious to the tiny ‘Con beside him.

She couldn’t resist and ever quietly and carefully backed up then coiled down, wiggling a little. Yep this bot was about to get it and good. Rusty pounced, the little balls on her feet propelling her forward she landed with her little arms around his neck. “AHA! I have you now Autobot!” she giggled and then growled.

The energon-curdling scream that tore from Sideswipe's vocaliser was both loud and shrill; very unbecoming of an Autobot 'soldier'. The cherry-red mech leapt to his pedes, twisting round in an attempt to reach his tiny assailant.

"Who are you?" he shrieked, scrabbling at the tiny arms wrapped around his neck cables. "Fight fair, you dirty 'Con!"

There was a part of Sideswipe that wanted to grin stupidly and say, Oh, well, that’s a relief. See, you were all fine without me. Strongarm’s sliding gaze and tone of voice – coupled with the cold oil-slick in the pit of his tanks – told him otherwise.

“Hey, if there’s something you aren’t telling me…” He swallowed hard as he remembered that Strongarm was still the first and only ‘bot to have met him since his return. “Is – I mean, Bumblebee didn’t–”

He cringed, thinking how the Lieutenant had looked the day they had brought him back from his fight with the Triplechanger. Bumblebee’s recovery had been slow and not at all straightforward, and that had been part of the reason why Sideswipe had left – the stress of the situation had shortened everyone’s tempers until there was simply no more patience for the cherry-red mech’s divergent behaviour.

But Sideswipe had always thought Bumblebee would somehow still be here when he came back…

“He’s not dead, is he?”

   It was reassuring to see that Sideswipe was as oblivious as ever, assuming the worst had happened to the lieutenant, but the cadet was too overwhelmed with negative emotions to even try to crack a smile or retort with a snarky comeback. Instead, all she could do was narrow her optics in disbelief at the mech, lashing out at him merely out of frustration with the situation.

   “Are you out of your –ϟϟϟ– mind?! If the lieutenant –ϟϟϟ– do you think we’d –ϟϟϟ– be here in –ϟϟϟ– –ϟϟϟ–yard?” If Bumblebee had been killed, they surely would have made some kind of arrangement to return to Cybertron, if Cybertron hadn’t already found out, or they would have been off hunting down the ‘Con that killed him!

   Although, even though he hadn’t died, one of those may have already happened… 

   “Unlike you, we were –ϟϟϟ– here for him –ϟϟϟ– –ϟϟϟ– needed help.”

Sideswipe tried to swallow the panic rising in his chest. Strongarm was clearly agitated, but he was struggling to understand what she was saying past the glitch in her vocaliser. Most of the words that had been lost in static could easily be one thing or another. He clung to the hints in her facial cues and tone - she seemed more accusitory and frustrated than anything else.

And it was very clear that she wasn't in mourning.

His spark calming down a bit, he turned his attention to sorting out what had happened since he'd been gone -- and other immediate problems.

"Strongarm, you gotta slow down. I can barely understand what you're saying." He leaned towards her, frowning. "Since when do you have a vocal glitch?"

Sideswipe found himself unable to put up a defense against her torrent of angry words. There wasn’t much he could do aside from stand there, lips clamped shut and optics growing wider as he slowly came to realise just how badly he had screwed up this time.

The sound of Strongarm’s vocaliser shorting out broke him from his silence. “Hey, take it easy,” he blurted, impulsively putting out a hand to try and help. Not that there was much he could do. “Just… slow down. I’m – I’m sorry.” A tight feeling in his tanks told him that he would be apologising quite a bit – and to a lot of people – in the next few weeks.

Carefully he took a seat on the ground beside her. “I didn’t know my leaving would upset you all so much. I promise not to do it again.” He looked down at his hands. “Is everyone okay? I mean, no-one got hurt or anything…”

…because I left and wasn’t here to help. Not that he could bring himself to say it out loud.

“Did they?”

   Frustrated with her inability to keep her vocolizer from shorting out and crackling, and because Sideswipe seemed genuinely concerned, the cadet gave up trying to finish her sentence with a bit of a huff. Crossing her arms over her chassis as she sat down next to Sideswipe, she allowed him a chance to speak, her spark beginning to hurt a little as she listened to him.

   How could he not know that his leaving would be so upsetting? For all they knew, he could have been offline! For the most part, the team had gotten along fine, but…

                      “I mean, no-one got hurt or anything… Did they?”

   Keeping optic contact with him was difficult. She’d never been a good liar, especially if she had to stare them in the face, but how could she even try to deny to him with such clear evidence against her. Still, she tried her best, though her voice still cracked and grew strained. Maybe she’d have Fixit take another look at it; a little tweaking was all she needed again, right?

   “...They’re fine.”

After all, you’re the one who disappeared without a trace or even a goodbye!” Not that she had been much better… In all honesty, she’d just about abandoned the lieutenant, Grimlock, and Fixit herself. But this was different! She knew the trio was safe, and that she was safe, but Sideswipe?

   “Where have you even been?!” The cadets’ voice crackled a bit as her voice raised, her voicebox being stressed. “Are your circuits more fried than usual?! I thought you  –ϟϟϟ– some serious trouble, since –ϟϟϟ– never commed us, and Fixit couldn’t fi–ϟϟϟ– your si– si–” A slight growl was given as she struggled to finish her word, cursing her shoddy voicebox. It was better than what she’d had before, but a properly working one would be better! Now, she just sounded like Fixit…

Jumps up on the wall and peers around at the scrapyard. The little wolfcon had no identifying insignia. Tail wagging she pricked her ears up and spotted that someone was about for a change. She decided to sit and watch him for a moment, curious puppy.

Sideswipe was sitting on a crate, doodling nonsense glyphs into the dirt with the handle of an old, broken rake. Humming one of Jazz’s weird Earth songs under his breath, he failed to notice the soft patter of tiny feet behind him -- at the moment, his processor was far more occupied with thoughts of making an  apology to Bumblebee for running away.
