“No.”
That’s what he’d said. That’s what Levi insisted with stern finality shutting down the short-lived argument between the two of you yesterday morning.
It was a simple no—him declining. Him not giving you the choice to even defy this one time he had said no to you. Maybe that was why you couldn’t take it, because you were used to not hearing no from him. Maybe because you knew it was a stupid request—to stay back for an expedition, especially coming from someone who was technically high authority. To stay safe while everyone else—while he was out there, beyond a wall you couldn’t cross the second he slipped once even when you knew he never did.
Levi didn’t even give you a valid enough reason to stay back. Professionally speaking.
Dangerous, he’d said. As if that wasn’t highlighted in the job description. Risky, he’d said. As if you didn’t have a dozen records of taking risks inside and outside the wall. Suicide, he’d said. As if that hasn’t been what you all were trained and prepared for.
None of what he’d argued with sounded enough to convince you to stay back—not that there would be any reason you’d take to agree.
But since the exchange stopped at the final no—since the expression he turned his back to showed nothing but remorse and defeat, he assumed you’d follow.
Hoped you will.
You hadn’t talked to him since that conversation. Not lunch at noon, not training during late afternoon, not the evening that felt colder than usual with the dread the scouts were carrying for the following day.
It made you feel all the more inclined to talk to Erwin—for clarity. For a decision you seem to not be able to make.
Which was why you now stood in his office, in the middle of the night, even past curfew, watching the commander look down at his papers, thinking. At this hour, you were usually in Levi’s office, bothering him, or just lounging there as if you weren’t a scout under him—as if you were everything and more to him.
You were.
You are.
Tonight, instead of the comfort of that scene before tomorrow’s expedition, here you were, tellin on him to Erwin.
The blonde man spoke, “You are a part of the formation,” he looked up, “and you’re still expected to join the expedition.”
A pause. You feel the air inside the office grow still, but you still bristled as if his words hit you cold enough.
“A verdict on that matter is above Levi's rank.”
All you replied with was a blunt nod, then dismissed. You were out of the office minutes later, feet dragging to your barracks, eyes glued to the cold stone ground.
You didn’t know why your heart twisted wrong. This was what you wanted, but knowing that it was the opposite of what Levi had asked of you—almost begged of you—suddenly the world felt like it tilted permanently.
You didn’t know how to straighten it back.
The morning’s atmosphere bled through the cracks of the barrack’s stone. It was busy, crowded, and filled with the kind of silence that was a mix of determination, fear and acceptance. The shuffle of metal against leather echoed around, gear brushing onto straps, blades clicking into gear slots, handles that rattled every time someone took them out of their holsters.
Amidst all the chaos, your mind was a mess.
Usually, during the hours before expeditions, you were conditioned enough. Your hands never shook, your eyes never trembled, your insides didn’t feel weak—but this time wasn’t like the previous times.
This time—something felt final.
That same hour, Levi stood in his office, eyes scanning about the familiar space before he turned to the door, hooking his cloak over his body.
Your conversation with him rang in his head for every second of the day yesterday, every minute the both of you decided that distance was the better choice after the argument. Each hour he’d wanted to look for you—to talk to you before the next day, before he left knowing that you’d be staying. He couldn’t, he didn’t. Not even now.
The hour the formation’s being managed at the open area nearing the gate, you were among the many heads, like any other scout on their horse. You checked over your gear then looked back up, settling your feet on the stir-ups of your horse—grounding yourself in a sense.
You haven’t seen Levi at all. Not at the headquarters, not the stables, not out here minutes before leaving the safety of the walls.
If only you could hop off your horse or stir it somewhere clearer just to get sight of him, you would’ve. You would’ve. You should’ve.
Maybe you should’ve looked for him this morning. Told him you’d be going, told him you wouldn’t just stay back while everyone else rode out. You should’ve told him you were here, that you choose to be here.
But you didn’t, and shit, you hoped you wouldn’t regret it.
Levi was at his usual position, just behind the commanding front. His eyes were straight ahead. He hadn’t seen you—and that kept his thoughts steady, that kept his worries bound. You were safe. To him you weren’t here to face the crap that half the regiment would likely not survive.
He knew the plan. He knew the odds. He knew that you would be fine.
When Erwin began yelling, when the smoke shell he shot out streaked towards the sky, Levi looked back, peering at the faces that might not come back.
His focus shattered the moment his horse thrusted forward.
There you were.
There you were.

When Levi looked at you there was no doubt that there was an ocean of emotions behind every glance.
Love, adoration, need.
He always looked at you with eyes that told you everything he couldn’t manage in words. The sight of him doing so sent you back and forth between the moon and Earth, suffocating you the right way.
It still gives you butterflies—and you two have been together for almost a decade.
What makes it all the more sweet was the fact that he has always been observant. Those beady eyes of his never misses anything. Not the tiniest detail. Knowing that with you, it was ten times more sharp, it made you melt at the thought that someone exists to adorn you the way he did.
Everything you did, he watched. It wasn’t the gaze that overwhelmed you, rather, it was the kind that made you feel seen. The kind that made you feel all fluffy inside and made your blood boil up to your cheeks, because for a man who always glared at people—you were the only exception.
“I’ve got the list saved on my phone just in case.” You said, just now pocketing your mobile as you looked over to him for a second before digging back into your bag to check for your wallet.
It was Sunday, the day of the week you two agreed on as the day for groceries and house chores. It was your turn to go out for the supermarket while Levi stayed back to handle the laundry.
“You can always text me to ask if you missed anything.” He replied walking up to you by the main door in his rather white cleaning get-up.
For a moment, he was watching you rummage through your bag, then Levi’s eyes flicked to the side. Your wallet—the one you were aggressively looking for through your bag—sat comfortably on the corner of the table by the door. He sighed and grabbed it, deliberately slipping it into your bag for you to see that it wasn’t in there in the first place.
You looked up and caught sight of that damn barely-a-smirk of his, “thank you.” you huffed, running your hand through your hair and you straightened your shirt. “I’m off.”
Levi tilted his head slightly to one side and you just had to witness him scan you from head to toe—you had to start verbally recalling what you remembered from the list to keep your face busy and not full on blow out into a flustered mess.
“Medium eggs, milk, butter…shampoo…fabric conditioner,” Your brows raised. His eyes were still tracing you, “...milk.”
Levi finally stopped to meet your gaze, crossing his arms loosely while he quirked a brow, not entirely oblivious of the effect he had on you, “We don’t need two cartons of milk.” He said.
You shook your head lightly, “I didn’t say two cartons.” You recovered, whipping your head away and towards the door with a heavy exhale to calm yourself down.
"You said milk twice.”
The door handle was snug in your hand already, tighter when he’d replied. All you had to do was twist it and bid farewell—but you just had to glance back to give him some form of a comeback to redeem yourself.
Levi just stood there, existing—looking at you with eyes that said you were the only one thing worth watching in this world. The only person worth the softness in his gaze. The one and only he’d ever look at this way.
“Stop that.” You choked a scoff, hand slipping from the door knob.
He turned his head slightly, then back, arms dropping from the way they were crossed, “What?” he asked, the small distance between the both of you suddenly gone.
You swallowed, his mouth twitched.
“That,” a pause, you look away, “do you not want me to leave?”
Levi’s hand raised just enough to prop your chin on the flat of his knuckle. He didn’t need to tilt you up or anything—short husband—but he did along with turning your head, just barely to get your face parallel to his, “do you want me to answer that?” his voice smoothened.
The hand you had on the door knob was off it already, now palming the warm center of Levi’s chest, his heart a low murmur against your skin. You watched the way his eyes flickered from one feature on your face to another.
He just had to linger longer on your lips before he returned to your eyes.
It didn’t take him another second to press his to yours.
The kiss was warm—kind, your eyes automatically closed after the first second of surprise. The feeling of his thumb dipping your chin closer into him sending your head into spirals, you both fit too perfectly you might as well have forgotten what you were supposed to be doing. Levi pulled away before you could savor the taste of him in your mouth longer. It took you a second to recover from the high, and he was already eying you with a knowing look.
Damn him and his eyes. Might as well curse his lips too.
When he let your face go, you inhaled sharply and poked your tongue into your cheek, both of your lips still slick of each other’s flavor.
“Okay. I'm going.” You finalled, turning quickly to the door again, now successfully twisting the knob, pushing the door open. You look back again, mouth open to say something like “bye.”—”see you later.”—instead your voice failed you.
Levi looked like he didn’t want you to leave for the supermarket. In fact he looked like he wanted you in his arms or in the fucking bedroom.
“Don’t tempt me.” You hissed, knowing full well that the way he was looking at you made your legs want to pivot and shut the door to outside behind you.
The afternoon light slipped through the open door, the light illuminating him and silhouetting you. Watching your dilemma, Levi finally broke eye contact with you and you just existing, reaching for the top of your head.
“Be careful.” His words were quiet, the pat on your head soft.
Honestly, if you hadn’t chosen to walk out right then and there—you were never going to be able to go grocery shopping today.

Your husband himself was a snack, there was no doubt there. But the summer heat wasn’t something you’d want to go against with another hot thing.
So ice cream it is.
“Mint chocolate? Strawberry is a no. What about just chocolate?” You went on, listing every single flavor on the photo of the menu of some ice cream place nearby. The living room’s fan and ac on full blast, “Levi, what do you think about pistachio?”
His face scrunched slightly in response. Mildly disgusted.
Levi had a sweet tooth, whether he openly admitted it or not. He often bought sweet treats for himself. Of course he saved some for you—but he never ate them where you could point it out—primarily due to the fact that you quite liked savory over sweet, and that you would 100% tease him for it—just for fun.
Overall, Levi had the better taste profile for sweet things, so surely, this includes ice cream flavors. Hence why you were bothering him.
“Pistachio is bitter.” He replied, looking at you on the floor, crosslegged while looking up at him.
“It’s not? It’s…savory.” You cocked your head, eyes flicking to his bare arms then up again. He was wearing a tank top, it was hot, for no other reason. You also had no excuse for staring at what was yours every now and then.
“Savory ice cream?”
“...maybe not the right word for it.” You bit back, looking back down on your phone, “What flavor then?” You mumbled, furrowing your brows frustrated over the lack of options despite the page full of them.
Levi watched you grumble to yourself and whisper-read the other many flavors like you hadn’t just done that a minute ago. You looked like you were cursing both the heat and your indecisiveness.
He crossed his arms, “Lemon.”
You didn’t hear, too absorbed in glaring down the menu.
“...lemon,” he said again, leaning back on the couch, “they should have lemon.”
“Lemon?” You finally caught, glancing up at him for a second then down at your phone again, zooming into the fruity section of the menu, “Huh. They do have lemon.”
“Get lemon,” he decided for you.
“I hate lemon.”
“You eat lemon cake.”
“I—”
“You like lemonade.”
“Lamonade is—”
“You have a shit ton of lemons in the pantry because you said you’d be making candied lemon peel strips.”
You looked up at him, both in shock and slight offense. Curse your husband and him fondly knowing everything about you. “Okay I don’t hate lemon.” you huffed.
“You could just get vanilla.” Levi said quietly after a second passed. You looked like you were fuming so that amused him even more as he stood from the couch and crouched in front of you, “or get three flavors if you really can’t decide.” He tilted his head towards you, hand raised as he brushed his thumb over the peak of your cheek.
“Now you’re asking me to pick three flavors?” You deadpanned and he scoffed, “Don’t make me choose...” You mumbled.
…and the two of you may or may not have sat on the floor for a good half an hour trying to figure out what three flavors to get.

“Don’t you have something to tell me?” You asked, standing by the open door of the nursery Levi—your husband—was building. Your six-month pregnant self leaned onto the door, very much healthy, happy, and content.
Mischievously excited on top of all that.
He stood in the middle of the half empty room with what looked like the printed blueprint of the plan you two agreed on months ago. The dry wall was still exposed, paint buckets organized by hue, his tool box laying somewhere in the corner, tea with swirling steam sitting on the corner of a makeshift table in the room—it was another toolbox, just, bigger.
Levi looked at you when you spoke, his gaze growing fonder the longer he watched you settle on the door, “I do?” he asked slowly, brow raised, half amused.
You may or may not have found out about his little secret a few minutes ago—what he was hiding in his precious cleaning closet that you never really bothered opening yourself because he’d practically banned you from doing anything but lounge around the house ever since you both came home after that first check up.
“You do,” you chuckled, crossing your arms as you glanced past him, eyes bouncing around the soon to be coziest—cleanest—room at home, “Did you plan on ever telling me?”
He set the blueprint down and walked towards you, “If I hadn’t told you about it yet, it means I will eventually.” he said quietly, now holding you by the elbows, his touch gentle, “and eventually means not now.” the smallest of smiles dawned his lips.
You rolled your eyes and dipped your chin as your eyes found his “I’m giving you…a minute—to admit to it. Now.” You said firmly, playfully even.
Levi’s hand slid down to hold both sides of your waist, the small distance between you two was because of your swollen belly keeping him from coming any closer. He hummed, “I’ll think about it.”
You raised your brows in a dare, “...thirty seconds.”
“It hasn’t been half a minute.” He argued, clearly not in a rush to admit to his pretty much open secret.
“Ten…”
“And if I don’t tell you?” Levi negotiated, well, tried to.
You shifted under his hold and pulled away slightly, “You will.”
“I might not.”
“I already know about it, I just want you to say it.” You teased, leaning back to admire your husband’s pondering yet amused face, “If you don’t, I’m revoking your pregnant belly nuzzles permit for the day.” The threat was quite big—devastating really, given that Levi does it at every possible second he could.
He exhaled and looked at the miracle between you two, then up, expression asking you wordlessly if you were serious. You replied with a knowing look—he sighed.
“You opened the cleaning closet, didn’t you?” He said, tilting his head as he watched your smile grow. “You did.” Levi answered for you.
You watched him sigh again, this time, in obvious defeat and you stood there in victory, “Dozens of baby clothes, Levi—dozens.” a pause, you mirrored the tilt of his head and laughed softly, “How long did you plan on hiding all of that?”
Levi inhaled a short breath, the tug on his lip pulling a little more as his ears began to bloom that familiar strawberry hue, “Tch. I was going to wrap them a week before your due date.” He huffed, looking up to the ceiling for a second then back at you, “...until after labor.” He’d finally straightforwardly answered.
You laughed shortly, “You are not going to be able to finish wrapping that many tiny clothes in a week, Levi.”
His hands gripped your waist tighter, nothing painful, but it was firm as his eyes narrowed, “Yeah?” he murmured, “I wouldn’t have to since you already found out.”
You nodded your head at him stating the obvious, “Still, wouldn’t mind having gifts to open after shitting out a damn human.”
Levi scoffed, pulling away slightly as he turned you around, “I know.” He said, finally letting you go. “Come on. Since you already know about it, might as well pick out your favorites.”
The two of you began walking away from the in-construction-nursery, now heading to the cleaning closet somewhere else in the house. You already knew you’d probably call every single one a favorite—Levi knew that too, but the two of you would go through each and every one anyway. When you glanced back at him, he had the look of a man who was quietly exploding, overly excited from the inside—even if his face was as stoic as ever. The glint in his eyes told you enough already.
He'd admitted that he began to buy them in secret ever since you were two months pregnant, you’ve rarely seen your own husband shy about something—so this was really definitely part of the first-time-building-a-family-together-thing.
The entire day was spent in that cleaning closet as well as the space of its hallway.
There were about 74 onesies in the damn closet. Don’t ask how many pairs of tiny fucking socks there were too.

Tonight was one of the first times you'd done so and, well, you may or may not have found something about a certain captain during your little stroll...

The Scout Regiment Headquarters was dead quiet at this hour.
It was just the quiet flicker of torches on walls and the wind that howled across the many empty hallways of the castle were the only other sounds. The shadows that danced around the fire were the only other moving company you had.
Your boots clicked against the cold stone floor, walking around to clear your head after the day’s heavy paperload. Reports left and right—some from Sect Commander Hange, most from Commander Erwin that were passed to Captain Levi then to a different squad captain, then passed to you.
As one of the newly appointed Captains, they were merely easing you into the new kind of work that didn’t just involve physical ability and brute strength. Being introduced to the world of office work wasn’t exactly the funnest thing about the promotion.
Though the no curfew did feel nice.
This was one of the first few nights when you actually decided to walk around past midnight, you quite enjoyed the silence.
You were bee lining around the place, until you ended up pushing the Mess Hall’s door open, the still atmosphere of the place feeling rather unsettling since you were used to standing in it with the noise of the regiment surrounding you. But it was peaceful, in a sense.
Your gaze swoops across the big space, the empty tables, the cold chairs, and the few lit torches. Something small on one of the tables caught your eye. A quick glint of light that you saw the moment it came and went when the fire hit it at the right angle.
You went down the small set of steps and walked over to the table, eyes glued to the thing—glasses.
Before you thought much about it, you had already picked it up, inspecting it closely, wondering who could've possibly owned it and left it here this late. Surely if it was some regular scout, they would’ve come back for it before curfew, so that narrows it down to people who were allowed out past it.
The only other person you could consider was Hange—they could’ve stayed at the mess hall late or around this hour and may have forgotten their glasses…this one didn't look like the ones they owned though…
“Oi.”
Your back stiffened straight at the sudden echo of a voice, when you turned around, you were already half expecting who to see with that voice and terrifyingly quiet gait.
“Captain Levi,” you began, saluting, holding the glasses conveniently on the hand that settled behind your back, “hello.”
He’d waved your salute off and walked down the steps, eyes scanning you then the tables around you—specifically the one you were standing by.
“...can I help you?”
“What are you doing out late?” He asked rather than answered the pretty stupid question you had just asked—which in your defense, you were startled by his sudden appearance—what on Earth were you supposed to say in this situation? He stopped a good meter away in front of you, arms crossing loosely.
“I was just taking a stroll around, Captain.” You explained, mouth and posture tight. He still technically was your superior despite now having the same title.
Levi eyed you for a good moment before he turned his head away and clicked his tongue, “Stand down, Levi is fine.” He said sternly before looking back, “Authorized pass for curfew doesn’t mean you could roam around at night. It’s for late meetings.”
You sucked in a breath after that. That makes sense, though if you didn’t know any better, you would've argued with asking him why he was out then since you weren’t made aware of any meetings. You chose not to, not with that look on his face no.
“Yeah. Right.” You swayed forward a little as you gave him a reluctant nod, "I'll leave you to whatever it is you’re doing then.” A pause lingered then you walked past him when Levi had returned the nod, his attention elsewhere now.
Glancing back as you neared the short steps, you watched him, at least for a second longer before he could point out that you were staring.
He seemed to be looking for something. You just then remembered the glasses you had found and were still holding. Against your better judgement, you stopped abruptly and looked down at it, then turned around before your mind could even catch up to what you were doing.
“Capt—Levi,” your voice almost cracked when you corrected yourself.
Levi raised a brow and turned slightly, enough just to look at you when you’d called, and enough to see what you were holding. His eyes flicked to your face, then the glasses, then to your face again.
You cleared your throat, “Do you think these are Hange’s?” You asked, voice with a clear wing of uncertainty. “...I found them left there,” you said quietly, nodding at the table he now hovered around.
Levi blinked once, then for a second he looked like you could see the cogs in his head turn to think, but before you could even dare guess what he was thinking, he’d already beat you to it by speaking.
“They’re mine.”
It was your turn to blink.
His? Captain Levi wore glasses??

Levi has been watching you swipe through one emotion after the other for the entire afternoon.
Being on your period meant that you were bitchier than usual, and that you were practically going to be introducing more stages to the stages of grief every hour of the three days you were bleeding. Also, being on your period meant that Levi would have to put up with it because—ever since that one promise young Levi made off a whim—he’d swore he’d stay by you through every one of these ‘red days’.
At the time of course, he did not know shit about it—you two were five.
He still chooses to follow through it sixteen years later.
“He looks like a jerk.” He grumbled when you’d stuck your phone to his face. It was a picture of one of the college jocks you somehow found cute.
Saying he looks like a jerk was mercy in Levi’s eyes. He looked like a cock—literally—if he was being honest.
You poked your tongue into your cheek and exhaled sharply through your nose, “He’s adorable. You just don’t get it.” you pulled back, sinking into the beanbag of your dorm’s living room.
He scowled and turned his head away, grabbing his own phone and busied himself with it while your voice played like a broken record in the background.
“He’s so fucking handsome—like hell even other guys on campus agree with me,” you went on, “Are you one eye blind and you can’t see it?”
He didn’t reply. You sighed dramatically. “I can’t believe I’m still single.”
“I can.”
You hurled the nearest throw pillow at him, it hit, he didn’t flinch, you whined. “What are you even doing here still—don’t you have a worksheet due later tonight?” Your phone tumbled off your grip with a soft thud on the carpeted floor, the ceiling stretched out in front of you as you laid back like an arc on the circular, styrofoam-filled cushion.
He shrugged.
“You really are not giving me much to work with here.” You sighed and flipped onto your stomach, grabbing your phone from the floor again and mumbled something sarcastic about thanking him for his ever-steadfast-company.
As your screen lit up your face, you tapped on its keyboard with a rather displeased expression—but it quickly brightened up the moment you hit search.
Now the space was filled with small animal sounds from short videos. Kittens, puppies, cute chirping birds, then a sound Levi raised his brow to. It didn’t quite fit the cute category—it sounded like a dying elephant. He scoffed quietly and decided to not comment on it.
You on the other hand were a cooing mess. Bumbling about how cute one thing was after the other.
And when Levi finally glanced at you to say something along the lines of; “You hate animals.”—which was true, you did—he was instead shut up when he was met with a quietly sobbing you.
“They’re so…fucking…cute…” You managed between growing hiccups, “They’re—LOOK!” The next second, you were rolling off the beanbag and staggering towards the couch, sinking beside him in a mess of tears—again shoving your phone into his face.
In a matter of thirty seconds of gabbling, cooing, and crying chaos, you’d managed to push Levi’s phone off his grip and just not acknowledge the concept of having personal bubbles. He was already trying to pull away without success.
You were settled beside him, front pressed tight against his side as you continued to lean into him, still fixed on showing him whatever animal was on your screen.
Basically, you practically had your entire weight on him, and he was well aware of that. What you hadn’t noticed was that he wasn't looking at what you were showing—he was watching you.
“Calm down,” He spoke quietly, pulling you out of your breakdown. Levi’s hand steadied on your waist, “you’re getting shit on my shirt.” Though the thought was embarrassing, he’d said it a little too softly. You just let a small “oh” out and slowly started pulling away.
To which you weren’t able to.
Levi’s hold on your waist tightened a fraction, arm now slipping around you before you created too much space between the two of you.
“You’re still crying.” He mumbled, eyes staring at your tears then up to hold your gaze.
When you’d tried to say something, it came out more as a broken coo rather than intelligible words, “...I can’t just…stop crying on command—”
Levi pointedly looked at you and rolled his eyes, shifting where he sat while he effortlessly adjusted your position beside him, “I know, idiot. But you’re rambling, breathe.”
So you did. It wasn’t the cleanest breath, but it was good enough to keep your mind from going ten miles an hour from the hormones and the stuff that triggered them—handsome faces and cute little shits.
As your sobs dwindled away, Levi’s hold on you became more fond. He was painfully aware of it yet he couldn’t seem to let go.
So you two stayed there. On your couch, in the late afternoon, with warm rays of light filtering through the sheer curtains of the one window of the entire dorm. Being cradled by the same person who’d swore to stay for these moments since sixteen years ago made the flutter in your chest undeniably more profound.
And hey, maybe you’ve realized that the damn jock was definitely handsome, but honestly—who could compare to Levi?
Young Levi swallowed after he’d half understood what Kuchel explained to him about how girls had this monthly pain they had to go through. He’d mostly just picked up that they needed all the comfort they could get when it was that time of the month.
The next play date, he had this determined face walking up to you who was oblivious to the life promise he was about to make.
“I promise to hug you like the teddy bear my mom gave me when you cry.” the small voice carried, genuine…and certain.

“You haven’t been responding.” Levi’s foot blocked the door that you were just about to shut on him.
It was one of those few dreadful times of the year. You barely get your period given the erratic and unbalanced nature of your hormones, so unlike others, you only get to have it for about three times annually, or less. It wasn’t that you hated not having it as often as other girls do, but in your case, the problem was that when you did have it—everything’s pretty much ten times worse than if you were regularly menstruating.
To put it simply, being on your period meant that you felt like you were standing on the second to the highest podium of the worst things you get to biologically experience (first being childbirth)—with symptoms that were hitting twice harder.
And, well, Levi didn’t know that.
He’s your friend in college, and it's only been one semester of it. You considered him as one despite his very hard to read expressions and terribly dry sense of humor because under all that, he was a nice guy…sort of. At least to you he was—and the short list of his other friends.
You weren’t chat buddies or anything. Though you two frequently exchanged messages for a few things about uni or, in Levi’s case, to complain about something his friend, Hange, was doing or—was bothering him with. And you always responded minutes or an hour after.
Just not last night.
He stared at you through the gap from where he stood, his foot comfortably wedged between the door and its frame, “ you look like shit.” he noted, glancing past you, into what he could see of your place, then back.
He arrived at your apartment without announcement just a minute ago. Knocked once, you hadn’t called out. Knocked for the second time, you hadn't answered again. Knocked for the third time and called your name, you didn’t answer, again. If he hadn’t threatened to break your door down the second later, you wouldn't have gotten up from the couch and answered it even if he’d knocked for the fourth time.
“...thanks.” You mumbled, clearly not in the mood for anything—even for him. You always were, to his inconvenience. He’d just gotten desensitized enough of your company to not be annoyed. Now he doesn’t admit to the fact that he looks for it everyday.
Levi raised a brow, the palm he had on his side of the door pushed to keep the gap existing, “Are you sick?” He asked, voice low since he didn’t quite know what to say. Partly because he didn’t understand why he’d gotten up so early, opened your dms first thing in the morning, seen that you still hadn’t replied yet, and chose to drive to your place twenty minutes out so he could check on you.
He wasn’t insecure of not getting a reply from someone or anything, but shit, that seems to not be the case with you.
“I’m not.” You answered.
“Your place is a mess.”
“I haven’t even let you in yet.”
“I can see it from here.”
You sighed loudly then pointedly looked at him, “Did you just come here to insult me because I didn’t reply?”
“Maybe I did,” Levi’s hand retracted from the door, now shoved into one of his pockets, “maybe I thought something happened.”
You’d rolled your eyes then spoke, every syllable pronounced like you were talking to a toddler, “It’s just as simple as me missing the notification—”
“You don’t have notifications on.”
“How do you even know tha—”
“Are you okay?” He cut off, expression shifting just slightly, “I didn’t say you look like shit to insult you—I could’ve done a hell of a better job if I really wanted to. I said it because you don’t look okay.”
You shut your mouth, chewing on your cheeks as you looked away, “I’m fine.” you mumbled.
Levi watched you avoid looking back up at him for a good thirty seconds, then he pulled his foot out of the gap, giving you the chance to finally shut the door in his face.
…but you didn’t. Instead, you stepped aside and he walked in.
You welcomed him with saying that you were on your period and that yes, you feel shitty, yes, you were in pain, yes, you hadn’t slept last night, and yes, your place was a trash pile because you could not be bothered to get up either the bed or the couch to clean up.
He didn’t say anything at first, only nodded you to the couch and suddenly started cleaning around you like it was his responsibility. You could only raise your brows and reluctantly become a witness to the statement that Levi was a man who was more cleaning than words.
Every time you tried to tell him off, he kept saying stuff like—”No.”—”It’s fine.”—”Stay on the damn couch.”—”I’m throwing this away whether you want me to or not.”
One thing you did notice was that he hadn’t once said anything that made you feel like you’re a raccoon’s second cousin.
“Need anything?” He’d asked, wiping his hands dry with a paper towel as he approached you, still on the couch, pretty much a melted cocoon on it. You were hugging your knees to your face, laying on your side, half embarrassed, but currently being gnawed at from the inside.
You shook your head, biting your lip as another wave of cramps took over.
A blanket flew over your figure, hovering over you until it covered your body, the material soft, “how bad?” his voice came quiet, crouching in front of you as he’d said it. Gentle, too gentle. You don’t recall any other time he’d spoken to you like this.
When you only managed another shake to your head, Levi stood up and walked somewhere in your place.
He came back crouched in front of you ten minutes later with a warm compress you didn’t fucking know you still had.
“Sit up,” he said, now taking the space beside you on the couch, “use this.”
It wasn’t like he knew what he was doing. Like shit does he know specifics about menstruation, let alone the difference between regular ones and irregular ones—or if it was normal that it was painful enough that it shut you up. Or if a warm compress would actually help for even at least a little.
But what he did know was that you needed someone right now…and that much he was willing to provide.
“Didn’t think sweet could be part of your character’s vocabulary.” You chuckled, most of the pain had subsided, the weight and temperature of the warm compress easing it.
Levi glared at you from where he sat opposite of you on the couch.
“Seriously though, thank you,” you muttered a beat after, “you didn’t have to.”
His gaze softened a fraction and he looked away, “Thank me by replying to my text.” He said quietly, like he purposefully didn’t want you to hear it, but you still did.
You laughed and swore you would check it out later. Something lighter built in his chest when he heard you laugh despite the lady predicament you were in.
He was happy he was the reason you had.

It was a blur for the first few seconds.
You woke up at 1am, mouth parched, lips smacking trying to will your saliva to fill your sand paper of a tongue. It didn't happen, so you had to drag your body off the comfort of you and your husband’s very soft mattress and walk out of the room blindly, barely conscious, still smacking your lips together.
With squinted eyes, you navigated your home like it was a damn maze. You may or may not have screwed your head over one or two walls that you swear weren’t there this morning. Still, you were in a deep state of sleep—just upright—to give a flying fuck about whatever you were bumping into.
When you successfully slipped into the living room which was really just an extension to the kitchen, your feet automatically brought you to what your mind subconsciously remembers as the nearest lightswitch in the currently pitch dark vicinity.
Though you yourself were painfully unaware, the only other person in the house was very much so of your presence closing in on him in the dark.
Levi sat on the very corner sofa, nursing a warm cup of tea, somewhat glaring at your familiar moving figure in the dark. It just so happens that the lightswitch you were half consciously reaching for was about two feet over his head.
He didn’t move.
He didn’t speak.
Not even one sound.
You now stood just a shy few inches away from him completely oblivious as you leaned forwards, your arm extending in front of you, slapping your palm on the wall quickly and rather aggressively just for a switch, with eyes still half closed and the now welcomed addition of furrowed brows.
Levi’s eyes tracked your silhouette hovering over him, expression passively amused but very much sleepy too. This was his thing, to loiter at home in the middle of the night while drinking tea.
When your fingers finally felt the very edge of the base of the light switch, you’d stretched one last inch further…and your foot caught on his foot. Your body expects to fall on cushions, feel the really soft sofa pillows catch your clumsy-groggy self—but not the sound of a quiet curse and arms wrapping around you, the warm feeling of your pajamas being wet jolting your senses fully awake.
Levi grunted when you’d landed on him, all sprawled out against him on the sofa. One arm wrapped firmly around your waist while the other was raised as much as possible to keep the rest of his tea from spilling all over the both of you.
Took you a second.
“...Levi?”
“Who else.”
“...oh..”
“Don’t give me that look—you could’ve said something!” you hissed while setting up the table for breakfast that same morning while Levi leaned over the counter, eyes beadily following you.
He didn’t respond. When you looked at him to show how exasperated you are, he had his hand over his eyes, laughing quietly.
He was definitely moving the sofa away from the wall after that.

You see, Levi isn't the kind of guy who likes being touchy.
You remembered asking him something you read in an article called conversation-starters-for-the-first-date—on the topic of love languages. You already knew which ones he'd say now, not a surprise, of course back then you didn’t. But even so, you kind of have gotten enough of a vibe during that first date that made you not consider physical touch to be one of the probable options.
Now that you’ve been together for about three months, the memory of it somehow found its way back up from the depths of your temporal lobe and into the front of your mind—made you ponder on it.
The more you think about it, the more it slowly begins to become funny since you realize that you never questioned it either.
Don't get it wrong, he loves you. Too much sometimes. But ever since the very beginning of your little love story, it became harder to recall at least five times he’d held your hand in public and barely ten times at home.
So that kind of made it easy to pick out those small, cute moments, like wrapping his pinky to your pinky.
Even hugging you was a rare emote, or holding you for no fucking reason. It definitely wasn't because he didn't like touching you, god no. Levi once joked about you being the only other thing he liked the feeling of touching. With the sole exception of himself and his dick.
He brushed it off as a joke but you were sure there was some truth to it. Most of it.
Admittedly, you were clingy, so maybe you were just overthinking the lack of grand cuddles and overbearing-reciprocated clinginess. You also don't quite remember a time when you asked him about it along the lines of; "Don't you want to hold my hand?"—or say something like; "You act like I'm dirty with how little you touch me."
Intimately speaking, this—minimal-physical-touch-thing wasn't really a problem because fuck, Levi was good in bed—in you. Every other touch instance beyond that? You can count them with all twenty of your fingers. Yes, including feet fingers.
However...since you have been letting your brain be occupied by these thoughts, you eventually started seeing the minority you didn’t count. Especially that one little thing Levi does with you that your mind often lets slip from your memory.
Cats.

Nuzzling.
When the idea first crossed your mind, best believe you crashed into your bed and smacked your laptop open to confirm something.
“...cat nuzzling...feline...f, e, l, i...” you mumbled as your fingers flew across your keyboard, typing the thought away before you forgot about it.
“AHA!...itisafelinebehaviorwhereacatgentlyrubstheirheadandfaceagainstyou—HAH!” You semi-rapped the definition part out of pure excitement. The aha and hah’s you’d yelled out had Levi poking his head into your room asking if the reaction came from you figuring out how to multiply his detergent stock without spending twice the money.
The way your eyes looked up to him slowly plus the growing grin of your face said otherwise. It made him recoil, “what?” his eyes narrowed, suspicious and well aware that you had that look that said you fucking-found-something-out.
“Nope. Nothing.” You sucked your lips in in an act of hiding the rest of the rise of a cheeky smile, “it’s nothing.” you added quickly, shutting the screen of your laptop with deliberate slowness.
Levi had to stare at you for another good minute, just to see if you’d spill. You didn’t, so he gave up and finally walked in, sinking into the space beside you on your bed, snug against your side.
You really didn’t tell him and you struggled not to giggle while he just now was doing the very thing you were refusing to tell him. Nuzzling his face against the ball of your shoulder, the motion soft, lighting up your heart in the warmest way possible.
At least now you knew that the instances of Levi and physical touch being under the same breathing space exceeded all twenty of your fingers. Now counting the small moments in the past you didn’t include, and the ones that’ll happen in the long future ahead of your relationship.

Levi already had his brow raised the moment he stepped into the room—into the abomination of a scene in front of him.
He couldn’t tell the difference between—you being surrounded by colored paper, pens, brushes, tape, stickers, a blade, a full trashcan of more paper—and an island of trash with you in the middle that has now replaced half of the living room.
He might just say it was the latter. Might.
“What,” A pause, he felt a vein tick near the pulse of his neck, “are you doing?”
The living room smelt like a mix of citrus and cotton, the usual, but now it was a mix of that combination with the fresh paper smell that you loved—the ones you’d smell when you flipped through a newly bought book. Besides that, the television was also on, playing some show you swore you’d finished last year. Apparently last year dragged on until another 12 months later.
It was that and the music blasting in your ear that made Levi’s voice skip past your conscious thought. You were even humming to it—not exactly all in on what you were supposedly watching. Completely oblivious of the man, as short as he was, standing at the entryway of your living room.
You did have your back facing him while you sat on the floor, legs all spread and back leaned forward like you yourself was the magnifying glass adjusting back and forth to look at something on an atomic level.
Kind of like a V shape with a standing dick in the middle.
You didn’t turn your head to his voice, hands and eyes busy cutting through a folder with scissors that were a tad too small for the task. You were mumbling something along the thoughtful lines of, “...what should I make for dinner..” in between lyrics that didn’t quite sound right every now and then.
Levi’s brow lowered when he’d realized that you definitely did not hear him, so instead of calling out again or asking the same question, he simply stood there, watching you from a handful of steps behind.
He stared at the way you leaned back when you were looking at the folder you’d cut, an extended arm dramatically stretched ahead of you. He watched the tilt of your head enough that he’d mirrored it just slightly before he caught himself doing so. He listened to your voice and the sounds you made, the broken lyrics, the humming, the short bursts of your train of thought that you voiced.
He couldn’t help it, to watch you.
Levi had already let the mess slip past his head a minute ago, he could clean later or force you to clean everything with him later. He’d even forced down the comment he might’ve made a second ago about how you weren't even watching. For now, he’d leaned on the frame of the entry way, gaze never leaving the obnoxious shape of his woman on the floor.
“Why does it look crooked…is the ruler fucking crooked?,” you said, glaring at the paper you’d just lined—then at the ruler like it had personally offended you for causing an error you likely made on your own.
You sighed and rolled your eyes, already grabbing a box of poorly sharpened colored pencils. As your gaze lifted to the tv, you squinted at the couple who were quite the fitting pair and shook your head.
”Darling, I swear—just listen to me, my love”
”No!” a finger was straight and steadfast in the space between the two bodies that were a mix of fury, begging, and betrayal, “Don’t you dare call me that—either of it. Leave—”
“—and don’t come back!” you’d mimicked, mouthing it with a shimmy to your head at every syllable, then you returned to bopping your head to the music that filled your ears.
Levi let out a quiet scoff and crossed his foot over the other, amused with how long it was taking you to realize he was there.
Your eyes ran over all twelve colors of the boxed pencils, mind building up some horrific plan that a toddler might just consider artistic.
The next moment, you were scanning your vast creative area and spotted the box of pastel a little further north to where you were comfortably seated so you shimmied forward to reach for it.
Unfortunately, your leg caught on the mug of tea that you asked Levi to make you earlier. One that was the complete opposite of the kind he makes for himself, all sweet and does not taste like bitter warm water.
You’ve forgotten about it after drinking half and fully immersing yourself in your creativity—now, well, at least the other half of it didn’t reach the carpet.
“Oh fuck,” you inhaled sharply and clumsily got on your knees, scrambling to scrape the stuff laid out on the floor towards you and away from the wet mess.

Whipping your head as you scooted away from the spilled tea, arms full of wrinkled paper and other stuff you managed to save before they got wet, you finally saw Levi leaning on the entry way, now walking towards your space.
You looked like a kid caught in the wrong act, “How long have you been—” you couldn’t quite finish your sentence when Levi started taking the stuff you managed to cradle, and when you had at least one hand free, you’d taken your earphones off and continued to speak, “—you’ve been standing there for how long?”
“Long enough.” he glanced at you, then at the spilled tea, “You just doubled the cleaning I was going to tell you to do.” his mouth twitched.
So did your brow, “It was an accident.” you reasoned, both embarrassed and infuriatedly amused.
“The living room’s a mess” He’d noted, straightening up and setting the stuff he took from you onto the coffee table.
You stood up and clicked your tongue the same way he does, opening your mouth to say something only to see his blanked out face now turned to you. That shut you up a little bit, “...it’s not that messy.” you mumbled, scanning around your feet.
Levi raised a brow and moved around you, his silence telling you otherwise as he picked things up around the tea puddle, “Get the mop.”
You sighed and stood in comical defeat.
One of the many things you admired slash lovingly hated about your boyfriend was his unforgiving standard of keeping every part of the house clean. There was no way of saying it better—he was a bitch when it came to keeping things tidy and he fucking knows it. Somehow, he still chose to love you despite your slightly messy tendencies.
You walked over to the couch first for the remote to shut the show off, then out of the living room, leaving Levi’s footsteps filling the space.
He looked over to the screen that was now black, then to you who just turned the corner of the entry way. Levi pulled a breath and continued setting everything on the coffee table, including the mug that was now completely empty.
You came back a second later with the mop and handed it to him when he’d reached for it. Standing there for a second seemed fitting—you felt like you were being quietly told off by an adult—you were an adult. You eventually took the liberty of picking up the rest of what was on the floor.
Levi slipped a glance toward you then back at the tea he was mopping up,“What were you doing?”
“Nothing,” you answered, grabbing the papers on the coffee table, patting the butt-end of the bunch to straighten them, “I found the art supplies in a box I stored away when we moved in.”
“And you thought it was a good idea to sprawl it all out on the floor?”
“It was an idea.”
“Right.” Levi’s expression tilted, entertained, but you were too busy cleaning up to notice.
The slosh of the tea puddle being slurped up by the mop slowly faded, Levi finished up and walked out of the living room, washing the mop up and returning it to where it usually was in his organized little cleaning closet. You, on the other hand, walked over to the box you’d set aside earlier after excitedly picking things out one by one until it was empty. Now, you set it by the coffee table, sitting beside it to start placing everything back inside.
When he came back, Levi’s brows immediately knitted together, “What are you doing?”
“You just asked me that a second ago.” You glanced over your shoulder to see him now holding the remote, then you looked back to the box. While your hands slowly and neatly placed everything back, it took you a second to realize that the show you shut off started playing again.
“I asked with were earlier. Now I’m asking with are.” Levi put the remote down on the coffee table. His face twisted into that knowing expression—the one he had when he knew you were chewing on your lip, thinking you’d done something wrong. “Not the same question.”
He stood by you, peering slightly at the box and what you were doing; putting everything back. The man’s face worked, a sliver of a bemused smile began to fit his expression since you were acting like he scolded you for making a mess.
Well, he didn’t. Kind of. Not really.
“Are you done?” he asked slowly, lowering down to settle behind you, head almost slotting by the curve of your shoulder.
“I wasn’t even doing anything.”
“You were.” Levi’s eyes ran over your hands and the rest that was left on the coffee table, then the contents of the box, “The episode you were watching was only half-way through and you’re already cleaning up.”
You sighed and chuckled bitterly, “I wasn’t even watching—and besides, you said it was a mess.”
“The spilt tea was the worst of it,” he drawled, turning his head just enough into you to plant a soft kiss on the crook of your neck, “everything else, I don’t mind.”
Your stomach fluttered. Before you could even pull away or argue, Levi’s arms circled around you and his hands gently held yours to keep them from putting away more stuff than you already have.
“Just use the coffee table,” he purred, breath warm against the pulse on your neck, “don’t stop just because you thought I called whatever you were doing a mess.”
You tilted your head away and raised a brow, “You quite literally said ‘the living room’s a mess’—are you trying to gaslight me into thinking I misheard you or something?” the tone of your voice switched from soft, to mimicking his, then to feigning offense.
Levi leaned away slightly, a tug pulling at the corner of his lips, “no,” his eyes stared at yours a second longer before he let go of your hands and looked down on the box as he began to take out what you’d put back in, “I’m saying I don’t give a shit if you make a mess. I’ll clean it up after anyway.”
His gaze slipped sideways towards the close proximity of your faces then spoke lower, “and I would take a thank you in bed for it.”
“Is this your way of talking dirty to me now? Bargaining?” You’d said, trying and failing to keep a smile down as your face tinted red.
Levi rolled his eyes at you and scoffed, the sound low enough to pull the right hot strings that you almost didn’t hear what he’d said after. “I can work with the sofa if you're so eager to thank me.”
It didn’t take you long to try and wiggle away from him just to keep the redness of your face and the building sensation between your legs as far away from the one who triggered them, only to hear Levi chuckle at the sorry attempt to get away from him.
He then sat around your figure, back pressed against his front, arms trapping you. You were conveniently snug between his thighs, pinned by both his hands on either side of your waist. The feeling of his palms flexing against you sent sparks flying through your skull.
“...I’m serious,” he growled as he leaned into the line of your jaw and nipped at its skin, “now keep playing with colors and have fun.”
One sharp breath from you was the only thing that separated that moment and the next when he grabbed your face and turned it to face him. His lips that were just tracing your jaw now fit into yours—one hot second—then he pulled away and slipped one earphone into one of your ears while you were still a flushed mess.
Levi dragged his tongue across half his upper lip and smirked, standing up, already walking out of the living room when you had finally clicked back into the present.
“...you fucking tease.”
Trying to comprehend the music that blared in your right ear, or the tv show’s dialogue, or the way your hands still hovered over the box—none of the three were even a viable option with how Levi had just short circuited your brain. You scoffed loudly and turned back to what was in front of you, shaking your head once while your tongue poked into your cheek. The taste of the brief damn kiss still lingering.
Fine. For now, you’ll continue playing around the art supplies.
In the back of your head, you'd already made sure to thank him later tonight.
