Silas and his twin sister Willow were born and raised on a commune for the first ten years of their life and raised by their two fathers. Their lives have always been unconventional and it's easy to see why Silas doesn't mind being called a hippie.

When the commune began to lean towards more cultist views, the McKay's decided to pack up and move to Colorado. Willow and Silas' fathers purchased a plot of land to grow marijuana and also produce to sell at the farmer's market. It was the first time Silas ever had a taste of a "normal" life but it was still far from what society deemed as conventional.

Going to public school for the first time was terrifying but Silas quickly made friends who accepted him for his unique family life. He was never ashamed to be exactly who he is either which sometimes made him all the more likable. Silas was known as the class clown as he got older, because public school seemed to go against the anti-establishment views he was raised with. He knew he wouldn't need any of the "education" he was being given, so lost a lot of interest.

Silas could be explained as a neutralist and pacifist in many ways. He's always in the middle, neither tipping to one side or the other. He's never voted, still doesn't own a TV and has cellphone that's seen better days and barely ever charged.

His ultimate goal is to balance an off the grid lifestyle without being isolated. He doesn't want to recreate the commune he grew up in but he also doesn't want to fall into line like everybody else does.

When he's not at work, Silas is usually with his sister, his father's or with his friends. Sometimes causing harmless trouble or other times simply watching it unfold.

Silas always loved visiting his dads, way out of the city and feeling like they were in the middle of nowhere. But, he also liked going back to Southside and seeing friends. So, he wasn’t going to decide to move again. It took a lot of convincing for him to leave in the first place. Helping Everest cook fresh and tasty food was his favorite reason to visit and today it was cucumber and avocado guzpacho. “Aaaand a little bit of cumin.” Silas said happily, dropping the table spoon into the blender with the rest of the ingredients. “Remember when I was a kid and we had to blend everything with those like...mortars? That was actually kinda cool. But this is way easier.”

“I don’t know, maybe I am reading your mind.” Bunny shrugged sarcastically. “Like it’d be hard to?” It was probably a 50/50 guess to what Silas was thinking about. Birds being Russian spies or T.Vs making your eyes go square. Bunny blinked a few times at him, already noticing the small line building behind him as her eye twitched. Jesus, when was a rich man going to just realize she was too cute for this life? She was getting old, almost thirty and needed to bag one before she got wrinkles. She tried with all her might to remember the training day which talked her through all the different coffees, but she was severely hungover and thought they’d not hire her. And people wanted to say being pretty was a privilege. “Quebec.” she settled on, probably not at all accurate. “Actually I think some are Italian.” she then said. “Actually, wait, some are definitely local…wait no, we don’t have coffee in Colorado?”

Silas was an idiot but he knew when he was being insulted, which was why he never really liked how he felt when he dated Bunny. Well, it was for a month in high school so it wasn’t exactly a romance for the ages. “It would, unless you were like hacking into a microchip I didn’t know was planted in me.” he laughed about it, scrunching his nose up when she had no idea where the coffee beans were from. “Er...Bun?” he laughed at her before tapping his finger on the glass by a locally made brownie. “I just wanted a snack. I don’t drink coffee. Not much anyways, it’s basically raises cortisol levels and keeps office workers addicted to their job. Notice how offices always have a coffee machine?” he then tapped his temple.

Kasen had already began to pull away in the car before Silas even closed the door, grumbling under his breath. Buses and fucking ATMs. “That happen a lot round here?” he asked back sarcastically. “If someone’s running with a bunch of cash out of Southside, it’s fucking stolen.” It felt like talking to a child, tucking away the notes with one hand and the other firmly on the wheel as he sped up. He glanced across at Silas, sighing again. “Of course I’m gonna fucking hurt him and I’ll give the granny you point out Hell too just to prove a point.” he found it funny at least, but it was a statement that was probably going to put Silas in a coma. “Mac, I swear to God.” Kas watched the street as much as he could, trying to pin point anyone who looked like they’d be dumb enough to steal from Sunnyside. “You know that was owed to Cross, right? I’m doing you a favor, you’re an accomplice now.”

“How was I supposed to know that for sure? He could’ve just got paid and missed a bus?” Silas shrugged, thinking it was rude to assume someone running was a criminal. Not that he judged criminals, he supported them and thought it was good they were brave enough to stick it to the system. He wasn’t, not all the time anyways. “Well now I’m definitely not saying anything.” he crossed his arms out of beligerance, staring at the sidewalk. “To be honest, if he’s still even on this street it’ll be obvious? He had a huge bag on his back so you don’t even need me anyways.” he rambled, waving his hand at the talk of Hunter Cross. “I absolutely am not an accomplice, I got here trying to find Wills and just picked up a bunch of twentys.”

“That’s why number one: you don’t turn your Bluetooth on and number two: you don’t get an iPhone. Android is better anyways and you can encrypt all of your files then set them to delete themselves if anyone tries to get into your phone. It’s what all big time criminals do.” She wasn’t positive that big time criminals did that, she didn’t even know any big time criminals. Will rushed forward and snatched the camera from his hand. Immediately taking his photo then trying to look at the pictures he’d already taken. “Maybe purple or just more blonde. Ooo, or teal would be cool. I’ll bring dad with me so I don’t get the wrong dye, he always knows how to read past the label.” Her hand waved off his concern. Honestly if her brain wasn’t already fried from the pollution in the air or the unfiltered water she drinks. At least one of their dads would lose their minds if they knew she drank water straight from the tap without at least putting it through a filtration system first. “I haven’t talked to Cricket in awhile. Stop reading my thoughts.” She frowned and pressed her lips together. “I don’t want Kas to be my friend either.” Some days she wanted to set fire to his trailer but that was besides the point. “Oh, right, greatness.” She nodded. “Speaking of friends, how’s things going with you and Looooooola?”

“Well, I’m not a big criminal. And what happens to all the data you need to set a phone up, hm? Sold, to the highest bidder. That and they keep showing all the targeted ads they think you like, or posts to keep you scrolling. Even work out when you’re more likely to get bored of what you’re looking at and leave, so then add something you like to stay. Nooo thank you.” Silas rambled, proud of himself for not being lured into a 21st century trap. He tilted his head to the side to try and picture his sister with a different hair color, teal seemed to work the best so he nodded. “Would people still know we’re twins because I don’t want blue hair.” he said, taking his cap off to run his fingers through the blond. “Or to fry my brain, I need what I have.” Which wasn’t much. He chuckled as he threw the cap back on and pointed to his sister. “Maybe you got bluetooth on. Why don’t you go say hey or something? Or not, don’t have to.” Silas then huffed about Lola, shrugging and then gesturing widely to nothing. “Well, I don’t like labels and she doesn’t like labels but she still won’t let me in her house again because she said not having labels makes it look bad or something. So, we’re just doing exactly what we’d do in the house but....in horse shit.”

                                                   Xavier was probably right about Lola being psychic because she knew Silas was a few moments away from asking about going inside. She hated having to set boundaries, firmly believing love shouldn’t be caged but she was beginning to feel like an idiot. “No, Mac. We’ve been over this.” she said as kindly as she could, pushing back her hair from her face as she sat up. How could she put it nicely. “You’re always a sweetheart, I promise it’s not that.” she shrugged, dropping her hand to his and patting it softly. She flopped her head to the side. Please know what she was talking about Silas. “I…I’d like my family to think I can at least choose a right person for me, and not keep changing them around.” Did that make sense? “If I keep taking you home and then saying, oh never mind we’re just friends again, I look like I’m an idiot.”

Silas listened, tilting his head slowly to the side as Lola explained to him and then slowly to the other the more she talked. “But...but...I am a right person!” he exclaimed with a softly hurt tone. “There’s not really another right person for you in this city.” he nodded, knowing that they were the perfect match but why did there have to be choices involved in a perfect match? They could just be perfect matches without having to say it. “Aren’t I?” he asked, worried there was someone else and his inability to choose something had shot him in the foot. “We can just hang out and then not hang out, I don’t know what the big deal is because you said you didn’t like labels anyways? Which is perfect, me neither! So let’s...not label? And just...do whatever?”

Kas thought the bright blond hair belonged to Danny for a second, but the way the figure dragged it’s feet he instantly knew it was Willow’s brother. “Took her home about an hour ago, bud.” he said lazily, turning back to finish what he was talking about. Silas’ revelation made him laugh dryly, side-eyeing him and then facing him. “You see someone running out of the trailer park with money, that’s usually something you lead with, Mac.” Kas tilted his head before he threw his cigarette to the ground and nudged the blond towards his car. “C’mon, you’re coming with me. Point this fucker out on the street. Which way did he go?” Kas moved into his car, starting up the engine quickly so they could get this over with. “Give me that.” he then snapped, snatching the cash out of Silas’ hands.

“Eesh, okay.” Silas remarked, not sure why he cringed a little but Kas gave him the creeps. He was like the big bad wolf, but not the metaphor his dad Marl told him meant the government. He shrugged at him about the runaway, not sure why it’d be his business to begin with. “Just thought he missed a bus or something. Or maybe cracked into an ATM.” The second one would be cool, especially if it was an ATM that charged you for your own money. It seemed like Silas didn’t have much choice, not that he’d express that anyways as Kas shoved him into the car and he followed. “If you’re gonna hurt him I’m not saying shit, Kasen. I’ll point out a little grandma who can’t walk.” he said, acting like it was a fun roadtrip even as Kas snatched the money back. Bummer. He could have added that to the stash in his mattress for when the banks shut down. “Finder’s keepers, I guess.” he mumbled, because he supposed the phrase didn’t specify finding it while somebody was holding it either.

                                                    It was dumb of them to scurry around like quiet mice, because literally nobody else on the planet cared. Just them. Lola was too embarrassed to keep asking Sofia for a spot at the table for Silas one week and then say there’s no need another. So, stables it was. It was kind of cute, exciting maybe. Lola was in a fit of giggles as she kissed him, wrapping her arms around his shoulders as they fell into the hay but his exclaim made her laugh louder. “It’s just grass, pretty much.” Lola commented, her hands fiddling at his belt buckle but she felt him gently easing her away from him. She sighed, rolling off from his lap. “It’s dry, Silas. You’re fine.”

“Grass and shit.” Silas grumbled, sliding away from the lumps with a frown. It wasn’t about the poop, he didn’t care. He had his hands in manure before, it was just...life. But he was trying to be sexy right now, not sit in horse crap. He sighed as Lola did, looking at the stable door and wiping down his jeans. “Can’t we just go inside?” he asked, ever the optimist. He understood why Lol was trying to keep him away as anything official, because he always changed his mind. Choices were hard though. He wanted her but what if it all went wrong, or they spent years together and she didn’t want him anymore? That’d suck. He was a big believer in going with the flow, instead of choosing. “I’ll be real polite, I always am. We can just say we’re hanging out, they won’t know. Just friends hanging out.”

One of the worst things about coming back to where she grew up was all the old faces she was bound to run into. Silas McKay was a fever dream, according to Bunny who naively fell victim to his cute face and gorgeous blond hair. Until he opened his mouth for longer than five minutes and she had to basically nod along about the strangest conspiracies. Her prom photo has all the proof of what she thought, her grimacing smile bright and her eyes wide like she was being held hostage on his arm. She wasn’t, she just was absolutely not going to break up with someone before prom even if he was a raging lunatic. The awkward silence as she took his order said everything until she cleared her throat. “Before you ask, everything’s fair trade.” she pointed a finger up, trying to cut in the lecture before it started. “I have absolutely no idea what kind of trucks transport the coffee beans and I don’t have a clue about their carbon footprint either.”

Silas hadn’t seen Bunny for a loooooong time and looking back now, it was kind of obvious that they were never going to last. At the time though, Silas thought she was amazing. His first girlfriend ever ever. Which was kinda cool when you thought about it. He opened his mouth to place the order but then closed it when Bunny took the words right out. “That was kinda impressive.” he admitted, smiling slightly. “If I knew any better I’d say you were reading my mind but I know it’s just because I’m predictable, right?” he could make fun of himself like other people did, he wasn’t a complete nutjob. “It’s easy to work out the carbon footprint, though. Do you know where the coffee is from? I can get you numbers.” he said proudly, because he wasn’t a scholar by anyone’s standards but he knew how to find out things about the environment or the government.

“And…that should be it…I think.” Marl grumbled, trying to look at the new contraption he had thought up in his sleep. His dream was a sign that the GMO crops were going to make people turn on themselves and while he knew it was just a dream, it was entirely possible. Just look at the news. Marl wouldn’t, but you could. “So what happens is, all the damn pollutions from people’s shitty cars and shitty lifestyles go up in the atmosphere, right? You already know this, you’re not dumb. Did school tell you this or me?” Marl caught himself trailing off. “Probably me. Anyways, the shit happens up there when it rains and all the nasty shit comes right back down to us with the rain drops. Mother nature basically telling us to keep it, have our karma.” he rambled, pointing a few times at his device. “This beautiful baby will filter it out, give us nice pure rain water for the sprinklers and the crops. Just gotta work out how to get it to the water generator now.”

His dad was the smartest person he knew, and his other dad was the other smartest person he knew. Any chance Silas got was spent with Marl, lately in the bunker and using loads of coupons to get their supplies ready too. It was kind of exciting, but Silas mainly liked spending time with his dad. “School didn’t teach me anything apart from becoming a tax payer.” he snorted a laugh, pointing at the best man himself. Silas was a handful during high school, because he definitely didn’t want to be there. He supposed it was okay, making friends was the best part. “You taught me everything I know.” he added with a wide smile. Wow his dad was so fucking smart like how wasn’t he president? “Man, I can’t wait to learn half of the things you know dad. I wanna be able to make water filters as cool as this. All from your dream too.” Silas was good at DIY and building things but coming up with designs was where he struggled. “I had an idea of like a hat that would stop the betawaves but I don’t even know how to start that.”

“How can they steal all your data if it’s in your head?” It’s not like it could steal what it didn’t have. “You’re telling me you carry a camera around with you?” She didn’t believe that for a second. Ultimately she rolled her eyes and moved on because there was no point in pushing the topic. He was stubborn just like their dad Marley. “I don’t know if they’d allow that but I guess I could try.” She shrugged. The fact that his answers never failed to make her laugh was exactly why she kept going to him with questions. “What color?” She interjected before his next answer. “Thanks, I think. Are you sure I have friends, though? Because I’m seriously starting to doubt that.” Which was probably her fault, but she didn’t want to dive into that at the moment. Maybe she should go see Cricket. It had been forever though, she might not want to talk to her ever again. Mac’s voice pulled her out of the train of thought. Her face scrunched up in confusion trying to figure out what he was attempting to do. “What am I looking at right now?”

“Err...bluetooth, Wills. Do you ever listen to dad?” Silas chuckled. “They sell all of it too, and track where you’re going and what you’re doing. I got someone with an iPhone to show me and there’s always pop ups like ALLOW LOCATION. It’s fucked man and people just click it like it’s nothing.” Silas would stick to his years old phone that only allowed texts and still had Snake on it, but he never played it because he heard his dad talk about addictions keeping people compliant like video games and YouTube. “Yeah? I go get ‘em printed off at the store too, then it’s actual memories that can’t be deleted.” Silas said, tapping his fanny pack that was crossed over his torso and bringing out a little digital camera that he got from a thrift store. “Well, you can’t go pink because then you’d look like Lols, so er...blue? But you know the dyes are gonna melt your brain, right?” Silas had to quickly say. He also tried to count how many friends his sister had but unfortunately was coming up short. “Cricket?” he suggested. “Kas isn’t a friend either, even if you’d want him to be. Just saying.” Silas then added, carefully so the conversation didn’t get weird. Sighing at his ruined trick, he flung his cap back on. “You were looking at greatness but I fucked it so let’s move on.”

He didn’t make a habit of wandering to the trailer park, but sometimes it was where the most fun was happening. He kept a neutral opinion on Kas, not exactly hating him but definitely not loving him at all. He had a reputation for a reason and Willow seemed to think she’d be an exception. Dumb sister, where was she? He wanted to annoy her some. “Will with you?” Silas asked as he approached Kas, thinking she might be locked up in his bedroom. Gross. Just as he got near, he heard Kas finish off a sentence about a bunch of break ins and cash going missing. Which made a lightbulb go off. “Like, now? I just saw a dude, running real fast. Bunch of twenties fell outta his pocket but he didn’t hear me.” Silas shrugged, grabbing his wallet because he picked them all up. “Finders keepers, right?”

Sometimes their relationship was confusing and Silas wasn’t willing to admit that it was his fault. They both guessed that everybody was sick of them getting back together only to break up again so sneaking around was their new option, even though everybody seemed to want them together. Silas and Lola were just done with the questions. So, an empty stable was as romantic as it was going to get for now until they decided what was actually happening. In the fever of their frantic passion, Silas’ arms wrapped around his not-girlfriend as he kissed her while he let them topple back against the hay. “Ah fuck....fuck!” he let out, not even seconds after he fell, trying to move Lola off him as carefully as possible. “Wait, wait. I landed in horse shit.”

Willow stood in the kitchen chopping up some fruit while the eggplant lasagna baked in the oven. “Do you think if I bought you a new phone you would use it? Like I get it, blah blah blah, smart phone, but it is kind of nice to have.” She waved the knife in the air while she spoke then tossed it in the sink when she was done. “Plus you can take better pictures of all the pretty things you come across.” Like Lola, who was gorgeous and Will was holding out hope that he would find his way back to. “Also don’t answer this now, but do you think I should like, dye my hair? Or take an art class or something? I feel like I’m tragic and lonely for no reason.” There was probably a reason suppressed at the moment. She pushed the bowl of fruit toward him and grabbed herself a can of hard cider from the fridge. “Want one?”

“Nope.” Silas replied honestly about the cellphone. He never had a “proper” one and never would. “Steal all your data.” he added as the reasoning. If people wanted him, they knew where he was. “You mean like cameras can do?” Silas laughed, getting back to the important fiddling he was doing while he leaned against the counter. He was listening to his sister, honest to God he was, as he flipped and balanced his cap on his fingers while she rambled. He was used to it now, able to tune out and back in at the important parts. “Dye your hair at an art class.” Silas smiled at her, because he wasn’t good with choices. Every choice could be good and bad if you stopped to think about them all. “You are tragic and lonely but you’re also magic and got friends, so like, who cares?” Did it make sense? Nope. “Nah thanks, makes me gassy as hell. Hey look at this, Will.” he was more excited about getting his cap balancing down except it didn’t quite stick the landing. “Crap.”
