russia (and its predecessors, the ussr and the russian empire) has always led a particular war on press and journalists. it's never been about censorships only, they have always been killing people deliberately, they have been killing journalists for a long time. they "get rid of" people and it's such a normal practice that whenever a journalist goes missing somewhere on their territories nobody bats an eye; whenever a journalist goes missing on the territories they occupied, a long long fight starts because it's a lot of work finding a missing person, getting them home, getting their remains home.

i cannot stress enough how highly i recommend that people read Sofi Oksanen's "Same River, Twice: Putin's War on Women" because it's a great book and it's an example of a thorough research, a great essay written by someone who cares and who has dedicated their life to political activism.

misogyny goes hand in hand with imperialism. what happened to Viktoria Roshchyna is terrifying but not something unusual for those in charge of the concentration camps, created to imprison Ukrainians and people of other ethnicities, whose sole existence is a threat to russia because it's a threat to their imperialist insatiable hunger.
