The 2026 Gender Census is now open!

The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.

It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.

If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful!

when the door to meiko’s cafe opens, the bell (?) rings. meiko is the only one that can tell who’s coming through the door based on how the bell sounds and starts preparing their usuals before they even order

the only ones she can’t tell apart are rin and len, the way they open the door is just too similar

Leoni KAITO has verbal shutdowns. He usually uses his music to communicate when he can't speak, but if he wants to get something specific across, he writes it down. Honami is teaching him and the others sign language to make things easier for him when he doesn't have paper or an instrument around. That, as well as all of the sekailoids being able to be quiet when they're watching something from the real world, but still talk to each other. KAITO has an agreement with all of them if he wants to go to the real world alone during a verbal shutdown, where someone goes with him and gets whoever he wants to see's attention and then leaves them to their conversation, because he can't call for them, and he doesn't know if they'll be paying attention to their phone.

Honami knows sign language because Haru is hoh, and he was only a baby when leoni stopped talking, so the others had no idea. They don't really see Haru much now anyways, but when they do, they always make sure to have a short conversation with him. They'll always remember the look on his face the first time they did. He was going through a phase where he was embarrassed about his family being anywhere near him, but he hugged Honami that day, in front of his friends and all.
