I mad an app.
It connects two phones that are physically close, and then when you move in different directions, it displays the distance between them, and points an arrow to the other phone.
So it becomes a kind of compass, and you each become the other person's North.
Moving poles....
Orientation towards bodies.
It's about space/place, distance, orientation, intimacy, bodies.
It’s about looking towards someone.
It's supposed to re-think how we conceive of space + distance. And its an arrow that points away from the screen, not a dot on a map in a screen. Its supposed to divert attention away from the non-space of the internet and back into physical space.
It was commissioned for a show at the kunstvereins in Biefled + Nurnberg in Germany. Both shows are open It is free to download.
It's only for two phones, you can't have more phones connected (it's an anti social media!).
You need an iphone 4s or higher. download link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-space-between-us/id1054845321?mt=8 more info: davidhorvitz.com/distance
The phone above is pointing in the direction of Jenny Chert in Berlin. I am standing in Mexico City.
