He doesn't have to be your favourite person or even your favorite driver - but if you dislike him, there's no way this is going to work out. He is full of joy and whimsy, his smile is sunshine, he values friends and family, kindness and fairness. If you dislike him, I have to assume you dislike those qualities.

Holy shit, Kavi, this is so well written!!

I knew all of this about Lando individually (like his friendship with the rookies and his engineering side) but I'd never thought to line it up alongside Max like this. They're way more alike in the ways that actually matter in motorsport than people want to admit.

This article is fantastic! I think most F1 fans and journalists alike focus so much on the differences between Max and Lando, that no one realizes their many similarities. I love this perspective!

Meanwhile, oscar's driving the car about where the car should be but because Lando keeps dragging the thing up by the scruff of its neck, people think oscar's being snubbed🙄

if you guys were interested in mclaren's child labor practices (jk) this little guy won a prestigious competition at the end of 2016 and impressed mclaren so much that they gave him the privilege of working for them in 2017

so while lando was concurrently doing f3, he spent some weekends doing race support when the normal sim guy was off racing formula E, which means he would spend odd hours at the mtc, driving laps in the same simulated conditions the drivers had on track to give his feedback, so they could suggest changes to the team trackside

he was literally working through the night at 17!! he did such a good, consistent job for them that they felt comfortable making him their reserve driver at 18yo (along with winning f3, which also helped)

My Lando fan origin story that no one asked for lol!

It was actually my teenage son that got me into F1. Some of his friends were into it and so he started watching DTS and then some races. The first race he watched was following Lando's first win in Miami, and he had already decided Lando was his driver based on the fact that he was up and coming. He would watch the races and tell me about them and how Lando was doing - I had literally never heard of Lando before this. The only current F1 drivers I could have named at that point would have been Max and Lewis.

I watched a few episodes of DTS with him and Instagram started serving me F1 content before I ever watched a race. It quickly narrowed it down to Lando content and post I saw was his October 2024 world mental health day post and I was beyond endeared. That was quickly followed by the post of him with the rescue dogs earlier that summer and I was further charmed. He's been my ride or die ever since!

The very first race I watched was Mexico 2024, where I was introduced to Carlando. Reading the comments on Lando's post after the race is how I became aware of this duo. So of course I looked them up and was introduced to the wonderful world of Unboxed and McLaren challenges featuring Carlos and Lando and I've been a goner ever since!

Since Mexico 2024 I haven't missed a race. My son and I watch all of them together, sometimes my other boys join in but my hubby is not interested. We got a subscription to F1 TV in the off season and rewatched the entire 2024 season, since I had missed most of it.

Then my son and I made plans to attend the 2025 Canadian GP. It was one of the best experiences of my life (except of course for how Lando's race ended 😭). If you ever have the chance to go to a race in person, DO IT!! Seeing the cars on track in person was unreal!
