Virtual Insanity: if [Dueling] then FUN!!
Firstly, I finally designed Jim guys!! Also I really like Karen’s name in the dub so I gave it to his gun. I also didn’t want to make the Orichalcum eye too different because i thought it already suited what I had going on but there's some minor changes.
Alright. I might end up restating stuff I might have posted already because idk what ive posted vs just told my friends so here we go:
The first half of season 3.
At this point, humanity has been dealing with the effects of the collision that happens at the end of s2 for maybe a week or two. Headmaster Samejima decides the best course of action is to reach out to professor Cobra and task him with rounding up surviving students from the other academies on the mainland and providing the school with duel guns. Enter Johan, Jim, O'brien, and Amon. Amon who totally has a design right guys ahaha...
Cobra and his handful of survivors arrive at the academy and Cobra is quick to implement his mandatory training duels for students to learn how to use the duel guns and for him to drain their energy in his false hope of reviving his son... The exchange students and some of the top original students (those being Judai, Chazz, Sho, and Asuka) are put on the front lines for academy defense, alongside the training duels.
There's the short period of time in which things are almost chill for a bit, until O'brien kidnaps Sho and challenges Judai to a duel. Starting the long line of students to pass out and become ill from the dis-belts sapping their energy which quickly causes a rising concern as the front liners are working their asses to complete exhaustion.
Now onto the part in which the overworked top students after some rest are sent to investigate Cobra. The events here are largely the same, EXCEPT!! THIS IS WHERE SOME JUDAI SHIT STARTS TO GET WEIRD... Throughout all this Judai has been just as chipper as usual. Judai's friends expect him to laugh in the face of danger, and Johan is one who's a bit guilty of that himself, but as things escalate, so does Judai's mood.
In cannon, when Judai duels that one teacher guy who's mad at him for existing, Judai begins to question his reason for dueling. He gave this teacher the same answer he gives everyone "I duel because it's fun." Now remember when I said VI Judai has trouble differentiating his feelings. VI Judai does NOT have the same takeaway from this duel as cannon did. VI Judai is absolutely certain that this heart-racing feeling couldn't possibly be anything but excitement. It's not fear, because he's dueling! Dueling is fun! Duh!
I noticed while rewatching and actually paying attention this time, Cobra and Judai's interactions right before/during their duel have Judai progressively getting angrier. Things like "You'll pay, Cobra" and "I don't have room to enjoy myself at all" are totally tossed out the window here as when Cobra tries to psyche VI Judai out by being like "heh yeah try to enjoy this duel now kid" (he says something like this..) unlike cannon Judai who gets more perturbed/unconfident, VI Judai says "hahaha! yeah! I have no idea if i can even win this and that twist in my stomach must mean I am excited! I am dueling and therefore this must be fun!" Much to everybody else's discomfort. Your robot is showing Judai... (Sadly this means no friendship speech from Johan... just a general "wow he's gone nuts" across the group... sad face...)
So the gist is Judai's having a manic spiral because anger isn't something he knows and fear and excitement are too similar for Judai's emotionally unintelligent android brain to differentiate.
And for the road, a colored O'brien... that was a LOT of yap today hi guys.
