“It’s no problem. really.” It really wasn’t that big of a deal. What’s a bunch of papers but a mess that should be cleaned up and sorted through, right?

“I hope these weren’t some kind of thing for work, though. A few of them got a little dirty…” She said, picking up two torn pieces of paper. The edges matched up so she put them together before handing them over. Maybe dirty was an understatement.

“Ah.”

For a moment, Naki just kind of stares at the torn paper. It wasn’t like he couldn’t re-do whatever it was, but that was a bit... well, it was a little bit troublesome, wasn’t it.

“Well, they were schoolwork,” comes the response, and even though he’s disappointed in the fact that it’s torn, the voice hides it pretty well. “but it’s no problem! It can always be re-done! Right?”

“Where â€œsqueak” comes from? Well you’re as quiet as a mouse and mice squeak.” It made sense to him and that’s all that mattered. They were close to the cafe now, all they had to do was cross the street. Gaius paused and slowed down a little, realizing the other was quite a bit behind him.

“Mind keepin’ your eyes up? We’ve gotta cross the street and I don’t feel like watching you get squished into a pancake.”

"Oho! That’s very clever, then" Came a response after a moment's pause, thinking the nickname over. Well, it wasn't doing any harm. And Naki himself was pretty quiet, so he really couldn't argue against it much. 'Squeak' it was, then.

"Our apologies!” Attention snapped upright at the statement, eyes looking to the street instead of down at the ground now. Not like he was planning on just taking off across the street without looking, but still. 

"Don’t worry, there wouldn't have been any pancakes anyways! He's very careful, I promise!”

i am so sorry for being so sparse,,, between writer’s block, starting classes and a new job i am all over the place

i will get stuff done this weekend hopefully which will include putting out an open!! but if anyone ever wants to thread please feel free to let me know anytime!!

“No problem.” She wasn’t doing anything anyway, just out for a walk. It really wasn’t any trouble. She was probably in the way anyway.

“These are yours, right?” She said, showing him the sets of papers, probably readings or documents. They were scattered on the ground but weren’t all that far from each other. It wouldn’t be too much of a bother, really.

“Yes, those belong to us indeed!” Came the response, as Naki nodded, gratefully taking the papers from her. Thank goodness, he’d ran into someone who didn’t mind helping him clean up his mess. Not everyone in the world was as kind as that, after all. There was a moment’s silence as he continued to pick up fallen materials, before he looked to the stranger. 

“...Thank you.” He says quickly, in his own voice, feeling as though he should say it as himself as well. Otherwise, would he seem rude?

“Huh.” The strawberry lollipop was rolled around in his mouth as he thought. They shared a class? He never really paid any mind to the other people in his class unless he really needed to. 

“Maybe. Sorry, squeak, but ‘m not one for people watchin’ during class so I can’t say I’ve seen you around.”

Ah, well. It wasn’t a big deal if this guy didn’t know who he was, honestly. Most people didn’t. Or, well, if they did, they were often times a bit unnerved by his preferred method of communicating. Just let him live, people.

“There’s no problem with that!” Naki’s gaze shifts from the ground to the other as the fox ‘speaks’. “However... ‘squeak?’ Oho! Are you the type to give out nicknames? Might we ask where this comes from?”

If it was a nickname, it was a strange one. Maybe.

Did this guy live under a rock or something? What kind of kid never skipped class?

“Sure is. Shocked to hear someone’s never cut class before.” He stuck his hand in his pocket, digging around for something. “You said your name is Naki somethin’, right? ‘m pretty sure I heard that name before.” Finally finding what he was looking for, Gaius pulled a lollipop out his pocket and stuck it in his mouth.

Was it really that surprising that he’d never done this before? This must be a thing people do quite often. Huh. Not like he’d know, having been home-schooled most of his life.

“It’s true, though! He’s never done such a thing, is it truly shocking?” The ‘fox’ asks, as Naki’s eyes fall on the hand digging around through the pockets. Why--ah. A lollipop. So that’s what it was.

“...Nakigitsune.” He states in his own voice, bluntly, before the ‘fox’ pipes up with, “I believe the two of you share a class together! Am I correct?”

It was a pretty lax day for her, just going around. Nothing exciting was happening but her thoughts were interrupted when something hit her from behind. Needless to say, she went down.

She rubbed her head before looking up at the stranger. It confused her a little to see the ‘fox’ talking instead of the person.

“Don’t worry about it. Did you drop all of these? I can help you out.”

A slight nod was given in response, as Nakigitsune brushed himself off before glancing at all the fallen materials across the ground. This was a mess. 

“Oh! Would you be so kind as to do that? We would very much appreciate the help!”

And another nod, as he kneels to then begin picking things up himself. He would appreciate the help, but it’s not like he was going to make the stranger do it all herself. Absolutely not.

The day hadn’t particularly been kind to the boy up until this point, and now was no exception, either. He’d tripped over himself, spilling his school materials all over the ground, and on top of that, he’d nearly gone flying into someone’s back.

This isn’t quite how he wanted things to go today.

“Ooh, we’re terribly sorry!” Nakigitsune carried his voice, as per usual, to the ‘fox’ draped around his shoulders. “It seems we were a bit clumsy; please, forgive us!”

Perfect. Gaius stepped out of the mess he had made and started walking towards the exit. As weird as this guy was, he figured talking to…his doll is a lot better than getting caught and having to pay for the broken machine.

Plus, he didn’t feel like going to class anymore and this was his one way ticket out.

“Let’s go then.”

There was a moment’s pause before Nakigitsune began to follow along; he’d glanced back at the mess on the floor, briefly wondering if maybe they should actually stay behind to clean it up.

But the guy he’d just met was already leaving, and somehow he felt like it’d be pointless to try and convince him to clean up that mess back there, so leave it was. 

Though, as he caught up, a thought crossed his mind. Ah.

“Is this what you would call ‘skipping class?’ Nakigitsune has never done such a thing before! But surely, one time wouldn’t hurt?”

hello hello! casually arrives all over again two muses within a week and i’m brand new here… sweats but !!!

anyways, this is a starter call for my fox son here! like for a starter, the cap is 2, just because he’s a brand new muse for me so i wan to ease into things!

as an added note, naki here in this AU speaks through ventriloquism (his mouth is always covered by a mask, but) so i’ll try to portray that through italics when his fox is ‘speaking’ and bolded when he himself is speaking! but he doesn’t actually speak as himself much at all unless he’s comfortable with the person, so!

“Err…” Gaius rose a brow at the other. Was this kid talking about the toy around his neck or about himself? Either way, he didn’t see himself getting out of this easily.

He rubbed the back of his neck and looked around the room. Surprisingly no one had noticed they were standing in a pool of cereal that continued to pour out the machine. Seriously, how much did they put in there?

“Uh, sorry ‘bout that?” There was only thing in the way of him and the door was this person. He was going to get caught unless…

“’m about to head over to the cafe. Wanna come with? I’ll get you somethin’ as an apology.”

He could tell what that look was for, even if it was only a slight difference in expression. Of course, this stranger would find his method of speaking strange.

But it was easier for him than speaking outright.

Upon hearing the offer to head to the cafe, Nakigitsune had to mull over it for a moment. Well, the thing he had originally wanted for breakfast was unavailable, and this was an offer for something free... perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad to agree?

“Ooh, the cafe! Certainly, Nakigitsune would enjoy that, right?” 

“...Yeah.” One single word was uttered in his own voice, before it was carried over to the fox again.

“Then we will gladly join you!”

Gaius had just wanted a quick breakfast before class. That’s all. Did he get that quick breakfast? Of course he did…and so did the floor by the cereal dispenser in the campus cafeteria. He opened and closed his mouth, unsure what to do or say while he watched the colorful cereal continue to pour from the now broken machine. Maybe he should just leave. 

It was still pouring. Yeah, leaving is a good idea. 

He turned around, making a face of annoyance as he stepped on some of the cereal when he realized someone had been standing behind him this whole time. “Uh. Hey.” So much for making his escape. 

This certainly was... something.

The stranger before him in line for the cereal dispenser (not like it was much of a line; they were the only two) had just gone and broken the thing. Colorful cereal spilled all across the floor at that point, and it was a shame--here Nakigitsune had kind of been looking forward to having some of it for breakfast this morning.

The stranger turned around, and came face to face with him then. His eyes lifted up to meet the other’s, a silent question of ‘why’ lingering in his own gaze. 

“Ooh, it seems you’ve broken the dispenser, huh!” He threw his voice, as per usual, into that of the ‘fox’ curled around his shoulders; all the while glancing from the dispenser to the stranger in front of him. “And Nakigitsune here was looking forward to having that... What a shame!”

Well... what could he do now?
