Social Media Responsibility

I thought I would take this opportunity to share with you MY rules for simming and posting about my sims. 

As I see it, my responsibility as a member of the human race (and a user of social media) is to keep MYSELF safe and protect those in my charge who are smaller, weaker, younger and/or less abled than me. My children are grown men, and I no longer teach or care for young children, so the number of people I am directly responsible for is pretty small (Just me!). Whether real life or online, both my physical and mental safety are MY responsibility.

As such, I will never hold YOU responsible for triggering my issues. I will never blame you if I see something on your page that offends me. I will never attack you personally for expressing an opinion that I don’t agree with or for discussing topics that make me feel uncomfortable. I will never expect you to stop posting or change your content because it offends my sensibilities.

I hereby take responsibility for myself. 

As one of your followers, and as a user of the internet in general, if you post something I dislike I will do one of the following things:

Ignore it and keep scrolling. (I do this 99.9% of the time.)

Check the tags on the post to see if there is something I should add to my block list.

Message you privately to discuss it. 

Unfollow or block you.  

Hopefully those things will be done privately and will not become part of the public discourse. After all, some people are triggered by arguments and drama, and there is really no way for anyone to avoid it if they use Tumblr for their sim posting.

As a poster, I will warn you if I am going to make a post that contains overtly sexual or graphic content. If my posts are going to show genitals I will tag them for nudity. If you come to me and ask me to add a tag to my posts, or express some other concern over my content, I will do the best I can to resolve the issue to your satisfaction, even if that means I suggest you block me. 

That being said…

If you are over 18 you must take responsibility for your own viewing and safety online. Expecting others to do it for you leaves you open to becoming a victim. Personally, I have a list of tags that are blocked, because I have triggers. Some simmers don’t tag their posts, so I have a short list of tumblrs that are blocked. There are ways to protect yourself that keep the power in your hands, and takes away the ability others have to harm your mental state with sensitive content. If you don’t know how, ask someone for help or use the help feature on your social media site. Block the tags that harm you!

If you are under the age of 18, your parents or legal guardians are responsible for your internet use. If you are allowing them to do their job and using the features available to you for filtering posts, this shouldn’t be an issue for you. If you are circumventing their controls–shame on you, not on the person who posted something too sensitive for your eyes.

How!? All I want to know is how I have a following of 300 lovely people when I myself don’t think I’m that great? I know some like to do giveaways or sim/lot requests, but I am good at neither and not sure anyone would want something from me anyhow.

Mckenzie: I heard you and Eli had an interesting introduction last night. I came to apologize for not letting you know he would be stopping over. I tried last night but you were asleep and I didn’t want to wake you. [guiltily] I’m sorry.

Kimberly [light laughs]: It’s okay, Kenz. Honestly I don’t know who was more startled. Me or him. My initial reaction was to scream and, boy, did I. I feel like I should be the one to apologize to him. [laughing] You should have seen his face!

Mckenzie: Damn. I would have loved to see that. [curious] What’re you doing out here alone and not to mention, early? You ok?

Kimberly: I’m great, actually. I saw those old ruins on the way home yesterday and it made me realize how beautiful and historical this place is. I wanted to see it in first light. I’ve always loved history and, I dunno....something about this place makes me feel...alive. Is that...strange?

Mckenzie: Not at all, Kimmy. You have a passion for history like I have a passion for art. Maybe you should pursue a career in that field. Think of everything you could see, the places you could travel! It would be like your own personal adventure. It would be good for you, ya know.

Kimberly [confused]: H-how do you mean?

Mckenzie: Kimmy, you’re my cousin and I love you dearly, but.

Kimberly:  But? C’mon, Kenz. Just tell me.

Kimberly [shocked]: I still can’t believe the size of this head of lettuce. It’s like, I dunno, ten times the size of what I’m used to buying back home with dad and nana.

Mckenzie [laughing]: It’s actually quite common. You think that’s big? Wait until fall when the pumpkins actually come to season. That’s what happens when you have quality soil like they have here. [hands her a tomato] Put this in there for me would ya?

Kimberly: What’re you making anyways? This is a vast array of veggies you have here. Tomatoes, red and yellow peppers, lettuce, a... pumpkin? Please tell me you’re not experimenting. I remember the last time you did this and you ended up making some casserole that, if I’m being honest, I still haven’t quite recovered from.

Mckenzie: Cool your jets, Kimmy. I’m just restocking on what I am low on back at the house. I’m making pumpkin pie for Eli to pick up for his sister’s bridal shower on Sunday. [clicking teeth] Welp, I think that about does it for me. Anything you want to add to the basket while we’re here?

Kimberly: I might grab some eggs? And cheese. I want to make my breakfast quiche for you in the morning.

Mckenzie: M’kay. Let’s go then. I want to make it back home before the weather turns and while we still have some daylight. I have a few projects to finish up and I need natural light to do so.

Mckenzie: Here ya go. So, tell me...how did it go last night, y’know, with Austen?

Kimberly: Thank you. [takes sip] It went okay considering all that’s happened. He sent me what seemed like a million texts and called a dozen times.

Mckenzie: I think he was just happy to finally hear from you. Your dad did treat you like a prisoner for the few days it took you to get here. I still can’t believe he took your phone away, too.

Kimberly:  That’s pretty typical of him. You kinda get used to it after a while.

Mckenzie: All I know now is that you’re here. In MY house and I make the rules. He can’t tell me what can or can’t be done here and I’ll be damned if he tries to take you away. He might be my uncle but I will fight him. [laughs]

Kimberly: [laughs] God, I would love to see that. So, what do you have planned today?

Mckenzie: I’m heading into town to the farmers market for a few things.

Kimberly: D’you mind if I tag along? I wanna see more of this cute little town you live in.

Mckenzie: As if I was going to leave you all alone here. C’mon, lady. Finish that coffee and get dressed!

Matthew: [unloading luggage] Well, [wipes hands] that’s the last of it. Mckenzie, It’s good to see you, however, considering the circumstances you’ll have to forgive me for my lack of formalities.

Mckenzie: [sarcastic] Uncle. Matt. It is always a pleasure.

Matthew: [clears throat] Now, Kimberly. I trust you know the rules?

Kimberly: Yes.

Matthew: …and? What are they?

Kimberly: I’m not allowed to speak, see or think about Mr. Baker. Mr. Baker is not allowed to visit and I, under any circumstances am not permitted to leave without you giving the OK first.

Mckenzie: [annoyed] You are aware this is your daughter and not some recruit of yours, right? 

Matthew: [angry] Mckenzie, I’d watch your tone!

Mckenzie: Or…what? You’re gonna call my mommy and tell her how bad of an influence I am? Take a number and get in line, uncle Matt. 

Matthew: [irritated] I don’t have time for this. Kimberly, I put an envelope with some money in your suitcase. Should you need more, let me know. I need to get going if I’m going to make it back before traffic hits in the morning. I’ll talk to you soon. [turns and leaves]

What do you say we get tipsy, you tell me all about this mystery man and why he has your dad in a tizzy, and then we break every damn rule. The first being to call him. I’m sure he’s waiting to hear from you.

You can change stories, challenges how many times you want if you feel like playing with ten different challenges , quitting some and starting new, you can it is your blog. 

Don’t let anyone dictate how you play your game, how you post or write your stories. Your blog, your rules, you decide. 

You can take breaks and hiatuses and it is not a bad thing, instead a good thing for you! 

Be mindful of others and be friendly, treat other simmers how you want to be treated. Courtesy and good manners get you far. 

Make someone happy daily and post on their post, like all posts, or send a little ask with nice words. 

Play sims and enjoy the game, play it for you and if you feel like sharing the game play , writing a story you do that. 

Block all anon hate and do not post that. Posting messages from salty anons gives them just more boost, Block and delete, rinse and repeat, if nothing else helps turn anon off.

Kimberly: Wait, just listen. My cousin, McKenzie. She’s not like the rest of my dad’s family. I managed to talk my dad into letting me stay with her and because she’s so far away he went with it. She has an art studio that she’s already mentioned about me getting a job and is definitely okay with you coming to visit if you ever get the chance to. I’m going to save up money to move here on my own without my father. We will  see each other again. I promise.

Austen:  You’re damn right we will! What’s her ad-

*yelling* Sergeant Newman: Kimberly?! Let’s go. NOW!

Austen: *mumbles* Fuck off. Let me know the moment you get in. I’ll text you as soon as I get off.

Kimberly: I gotta go. *whispers* Alice has all the information. I gave it to her once I knew where I was going. I already miss you so much.

*yelling* Sergeant Newman: Kimberly! Don’t make me tell you again!

Kimberly @ her dad: I’m coming! Let me at least say goodbye!

Kimberly:  Goodbye, Austen. I’ll see you soon?

Austen: This isn’t goodbye, Kimmy. I will be seeing you. And soon. Sooner than you might think.

Alice: *softly* Hey, Kim. What are you doing sitting here all by yourself? Kimberly: Oh. H-hey, Alice. I’m, uh, just waiting for my dad to finish work for the day. What brings you here?

Alice: I just came by to put in for leave. Mark and I are planning a little vacation. *concerned* Are you okay? You seem…upset.

Kimberly: Y-yeah. It’s just- my dad and I- we kinda got into a fight last night and I’m trying to wrap my head around it.

Alice: Well, do you want to talk about it? I promise I’m a good listener and I promise nothing leaves this bench. So, *nudges* waddaya say?

Kimberly: I-I guess Austen went to talk to my dad the other day to get permission to date me. *mumbles* The talk didn’t go well. *sighs* Next thing I know my father comes home and storms into my room screaming that he won’t tolerate insubordination and that I am to obey his orders. When I defended my self he said I was turning into my mother. If that wasn’t the biggest slap in the face. And, to make matters worse, he’s sending me away for a while. Say’s it’s for the best and that this place and the people in it are a bad influence on me.

Alice: Jeeeesus. I knew Sergeant was an asshole but I thought it was only to us. Have you talked to Austen about this? Does he know you’re leaving?

Kimberly: N-no. I haven’t had the chance to. My dad took my phone and is making me come to work with him. Which, to answer you earlier question, is why I’m here.

Alice: Oh, Kim. You have to tell him. Do you know when you’re leaving or where you’re going?

Kimberly: I know I do! That’s the hardest part about all of this. He hasn’t said when or where so I have really no solids answers to the questions Austen might ask! I don’t want to just say ‘I don’t know’ because he won’t be happy with that. I know we haven’t know each other long, but I know him. I know I wouldn’t be happy with that answer. It’s almost better I don’t say anything that way he-

Alice: Noooo, Kim. *shakes head* That’s a terrible idea! He deserves to know what’s going on. Leaving and not telling him.. that’s like setting off a nuclear bomb! Look, I’ve known Austen for a while now. He’d lose his mind if you left and he had no idea where you were, or a way to get in touch with you. You have to tell him.
