Hundreds of mummies and pyramid of an unknown queen unearthed near King Tut's tomb

Just a stone’s throw from King Tut’s tomb, archaeologists have unearthed the pyramid of a never-before known ancient Egyptian queen; a cache of coffins, mummies and artifacts; and  a series of interconnected tunnels.

For the past two years, archaeologists have been working at Saqqara, an archaeological site in Giza, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Cairo. Recently, they discovered a trove of coffins and mummies, which may belong to some of King Tut’s closest generals and advisors during his reign (1333 B.C. until his death in 1323 B.C.).

Archaeologists also focused their attention on a nearby pyramid, which belonged to Teti, the first king of the Sixth Dynasty of Egypt. Read more.

The Ark of Bukhara is a citadel whose origin dates back to at least the 7th century AD in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. It is the oldest building in the city, as old as the city itself. In addition to being a military fortress, it is also a small palatial city that throughout history has been the seat of several royal courts that existed in and around Bukhara. It was used as a fortress until it was taken by the Soviets in 1920 and is currently a tourist attraction where there are several museums that show its history.

The bodhisattva is an enlightened being dedicated to the spiritual awakening of all beings. The compassionate bodhisattva Guanyin, in a variety of manifestations, is probably the most popular deity of worship in Chinese Buddhism. In the Esoteric Buddhist form shown here, this standing Guanyin has a total of eleven heads, with smaller ones above the principal head. The uppermost head represents the Buddha Amitabha, to whom he is closely related. The eleven heads symbolize the Buddha’s steps on the path to enlightenment. Size: Overall: 218.5 cm (86 in.)
