THE LESSON
Just had the worst day fishing ever. Woke up at 3.52am with a shocking headache, runny nose & loose bowels. Managed to will myself into a reasonable state to roll out of the garage with boat in tow at 630am.
30 minutes from my preferred launch site it was clear I had to have an emergency meeting with Mr. Hanky. Diverted to the nearest town and conducted my business. As there was a boat ramp in town decided to fish upstream instead of downstream as originally planned. Water had turned from green to brown since my last visit two weeks prior.
By lunchtime even though I had found fish I had nothing to show for my efforts. Headache was so bad it was making me nauseous, so I ate a sandwich and had a nap in the boat. Woke up and decided to start casting in some likely areas. Right on cue, the wind started howling and I proceeded to irretrievably snag then bust off three lures in quick succession.
Fished my way back to the ramp for another few hours and ended up with a big fat donut.
Never ever will I pack another banana for a snack in a boat.
Did you know that tuna literally cannot stop swimming?
Unlike most fish, they lack the ability to pump water over their gills and must constantly swim with their mouths open just to breathe. These top ocean predators are vital to marine ecosystems. Atlantic tunas are also built for speed! With torpedo-shaped bodies, species like the albacore can race through the water at more than 50 miles per hour. Even cooler: Bluefin tunas are warm-blooded, which gives them the muscular power to thrive and hunt in both arctic and tropical waters.

The thrilling conclusion to a fantastic fishing trip offshore from kangaroo island in South Australia
What beast! Stoked with this one!
RANDOM ANIMAL FACTS!!!
Today's animal: Siberian Taimen; or Hucho Taimen! Their conservation status is unfortunately vulnerable. Luckily, in modern day, they are usually catch-and-release to preserve their dwindling population. These guys mainly eat other fish, but have also been recorded to eat TERRESTRIAL prey such as rodents and birds! They have also appeared in folklore! Mongolian legend tells of a giant taimen trapped in river ice. Starving herders were able to survive the winter by hacking off pieces of its flesh. In the spring, the ice melted and the giant taimen climbed onto the land, tracked down the herders, and ate them all. Yummers...?
It's my 12 year anniversary on Tumblr 🥳
