It’s almost a day later since the series finale of Euphoria and after going round and around on Twitter sharing my thoughts to other upset fans, I think I finally have worked out what to say in a long form post here unrestricted by characters.
I think that paying tribute to Angus by showing the harsh nature of Fentanyl lacing was important, especially given the platform Euphoria has established over the last 7 years, however the decision for it to affect Rue was a bad one. Story wise, Rue has worked out that Alamo was keeping the IDs of Silver Slipper dancers in the safe that was robbed, confirming her suspicions that he’s involved in sex trafficking, after finding this out she should have found a way to not take the tablet given to her out of suspicion (whether fake swallowing or saving it for later or something), it seems like the realistic thing to do. Taking it feels like a narratively stupid thing to do, but this isn’t the first time Sam has cut corners to get his vision made.
And this leads me to why this move shouldn’t work production wise. Zendaya has spoken in length before how much she sees redemption for Rue, that she has taken on board how much of a role model she is for former addicts and addicts who are seeing themselves in her and seeing her struggle with substance abuse and because of this, want to get clean themselves. “If Sam is an indication of who Rue can be, she’ll be alright,” is a direct quote from her, as an executive producer, she always pushed for Rue to have the more optimistic ending in spite of everything being stacked up against her with Layrie & the suitcase (which would eventually be resolved in the show’s third season).
From what I can recall, Euphoria was created from Sam’s own experiences with addiction, Rue being his outlet and admittedly said himself he had a different ending for Rue in mind than the one we got, however Angus’s passing made him change his mind “If I was younger now, going through what I was going through, I don’t think I would have made it,” was his reasoning behind the decision to kill Rue. Now while I have sympathy with him, I think this could have been executed through another character like Cassie for equal dramatic effect or could have been built on from Tish taking one of Laurie’s tampered drugs, this could have easily led to Rue having a moment to discuss how easy it can be for something like this to happen in today’s climate and ultimately continue using this to push forward in her sobriety or religious awakening, or even both.
Now I think that after Sam reportedly cracked the shits at Zendaya’s scheduling issues, blaming them for the delay of the show (despite the fact Jacob & Sydney were also booked during the break between Seasons 2 & 3 and him also taking over The Idol’s production in the meantime), she wanted out of the show and as a result he saddled her with this ending and also demoted her so she wouldn’t have grounds to fight back as he was the main showrunner and wasn’t working with her in an equal capacity anymore. It’s a power play move that you’d think is shocking but when you consider how he gave Kat a half baked story last season after she took issue with the weight story he’d written & also how Jules’s character development went right out the window following her special ep which Hunter worked on with him, you can see a pattern forming, almost a form of punishment for either disagreement or doing better than him when it came to constructing the characters.
Zendaya’s lack of promoting the season also speaks volumes considering how much she used to do, even making formal letters to post on Instagram regarding the show’s content. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from Surpriya being dropped from The Pitt the day the ep she was most looking forward to aired, is that in the world of Hollywood, if something is being done too coincidentally, it was likely intentional. And Zendaya not keeping her role as EP and losing her agency over her character the season she gets the ending she wanted to avoid feels very telling of the mess that occurred BTS. As beautiful as the 7 minute scene was thanks to all involved from Zendaya, to Minka Kelly and even Marcell Rév, it’s not worth the payoff when you consider the BTS antics leading up to it.
Sam seemingly transferred his surrogacy to Ali in the end considering how he survived, mirroring his own survival, but I think the audience response to yesterday shows no one is buying this & is calling him out on his shoddy work on this season. The fact it ended with that Mormon family having more pathos dealing with Rue’s death and not her family and friends who we’ve known for longer is also a reflection of his writing shortcomings, as we at least deserved to see Leslie, Jules, Lexi & Maddy dealing with her death through more than monologues or in Jules’s case, monologue-less expressions of grief, having Rue appear to them to make peace feels like a more deserving end than what we got.
In short, Zendaya deserves to go 3/3 at the Emmys and Sam Levinson should never pick up a pen again and any women who choose to work with him, good luck with dealing that fragile ego.
