Mercury Retrograde 2020
Mercury retrograde will occur in Cancer, from June 18 - July 12. Cancer can make us feel overly emotional during this time and can cause emotions to override logic & common sense. Try not to dwell on past hurts and relationships, instead use this time for inner workings and shadow work.
During this time Venus retrograde 2020 is also taking place, you may suddenly focused on unresolved relationship issues and past misunderstandings. Using this time to work on yourself, begin healing, self care and meditations can all be helpful during this time.
Mercury retrograde does not necessarily mean bad things happen, or to stop in fear. It is an opportunity for us to slow down and take stock of what does serve us.

Meditation Monday
Today's Meditation:
Find a sweet, sacred space and relax. Sit with a neutral spine. You can also lay down or sit with your back against a wall. The important thing to remember is to be comfortable!
Bring your attention to your breath. Follow your breath as it moves in and out of your body, relax even more.
Silently to yourself, or out loud, repeat the words: "I open my heart to receive."
Repeat this mantra over and over for 10-20 minutes (you can set a timer before you begin). When you are finished and have released the mantra simply sit in stillness for as long as you can and just listen!
Allow yourself to open to your heart's desire and know that you are moving in the flow of the universe.

The Magician
As the first numbered card, this card is first a representation of new and bright beginnings. The infinity symbol, an unending loop, means that everything is connected by perpetual energy.
He stands with one arm stretched upwards towards the Universe, and the other pointing down to the earth. His positioning represents his connection between the spiritual realms and the material realms. Using this delicate relationship to create and manifest his goals in the physical realm he is the conduit that converts energy into matter.
The Magician’s robe is White, symbolising purity, and his cloak is Red, representing worldly experience, knowledge and power. With Yellow taking a predominant colour in this card it is important to really look at what yellows stands for. Yellow has stood for wisdom and intellect throughout the ages. It aids logic, memory, concentration, will - power and communication. Yellow is full of creative and intellectual energy. Yellow is about personal power and fulfilment, abundance, courage and self-confidence.
Around the magician's waist is a snake biting its own tail – both of which signal that he has access to unlimited potential.
The foliage is important to look at, not just in terms of what foliage is there or its colour, rather the idea that all the foliage is in bloom all around the magician. The white lilies, green shrubbery and red roses in bloom represent represent the powerful ever-blooming universe in which the Magician works. The four elemental objects before the Magician symbolize that the elemental magic will always be available to the magician; wand, cup, sword and pentacle.
The Magician is a master manifestor, the Magician brings you the tools, resources and energy you need to make your dreams come true. Having the spiritual (fire), physical (earth), mental (air) and emotional (water) resources to manifest your desires, combined with the energy of the spiritual and earthly realms, you will become a manifestation powerhouse! The key is to bring these tools together synergistically so that the impact of what you create is greater than the separate parts.
Now is the perfect time to move forward on new ideas. The seeds of potential are sprouting, take action and bring your intentions to fruition. The skills, knowledge and capabilities you have gathered throughout your life have led you to where you are now and you are ready to turn your ideas into reality.
In your quest to manifest your goals, it is essential to establish a clear vision of what you will create (and why) before you act. It is not enough to be motivated by ego (money, status, or fame) – you need to have a soul connection to your goals and intentions. You are a powerful, creative being, and this is your opportunity to bring your Higher Self in alignment with your day-to-day actions to create the future you want most.
When you are clear about your ‘what’ and your ‘why’, the Magician calls on you to take inspired action. You will need focused attention and intense concentration to bring your goals to fruition. Focus on the ONE thing that will move you towards your goal. Commitment to the task is essential, so drop any distractions that may draw your focus away from what you want to achieve. Be methodical in your planning to make sure that you stay on track and carry out your tasks.
The Magician - Reversed
In reading the reversed the querent may have a lack of confidence or lack of courage. The querent may be using their talents and abilities for destructive or manipulative power. In reversed there is a lot of confusion and even chaos.
Three of Wands
Three of Wands
As we begin to take this card apart, we first look at the images even though our eyes want to be drawn to the colours. A man stands atop, clearly he is waiting. He is not sitting or laying down, this shows us he is eager but it can also mean that the waiting is almost over. Often in parades after waiting for it to begin, people stand to see the arrival; this is the feeling in this card.
The three wands match the three ships coming in, this shows us that the man knew what ships would be coming and has been waiting for each to arrive. The ships appear to be coming from the direction of the mountain, this will be important as we explore colours.
The colours chosen for this card are very powerful in regards to the message. Using a luminous colour like Yellow draws our eyes to focus on this card very carefully. Yellow often stands for happiness, creativity, enlightenment, optimism and success; but it can also mean warning.
The red cape draped across the shoulder of the man in the card reminds us of extremes, power, magic and religion. Like so many of us, having faith in the magic and our spirituality has given us power but has taught us patience.
The green accent in the man's cape is very interesting as green often stands for rebirth or growth. Perhaps as the man has learned and experienced the characteristic of patiently waiting, it has allowed him to grow and become better.
The use of blue here is intriguing. Blue can signify calm, and wrapped around his arm and head we can begin to understand that this man is calm and centered; but blue is also representative of authority. True authority doesn't need to always be aggressive, and here we see that this man has the authority and the calm to bring the ships home. The mountains are also blue, in this way we see the image of blue representing authority and the heavens. As the artist chose blue for the mountains, one could see that the higher power is sending the man these boats that will make his life better, he just needs to patiently wait for the ships to come in.
Three of Wands - Reversed
Waiting for ships to come in, this card promises the payoff for that initial investment of energy. Your good choice brings rewards. Reversed, however, and you get, I think, a blocked interpretation. A delay in the pay off, or, if really opposite, the ships have sunk. The anticipated reward is not or cannot come your way.
Coming soon!

Six of Pentacles
Six of Pentacles
In this card we see an image of a man giving out coins to two men kneeling. As we look deeper at the standing man we can assess that the man standing is wealthy based in the red coat. Red has often been a colour of passion and power, and so we have the idea forming here that this man is probably very powerful or very important in his community. As we look at this man further, his outfit seems well fitting, and very colourful; this continuing with the theme that this man has enough money to dress himself so well. In the man's left hand he holds a set of scales, yet he is not "weighing his options' on whether or not to help the men kneeled at his feet; these scales represent fairness and equality and are often good indicators of a man of great prestige, much like our lawyers today use them as symbols of their prestigious status. This scale then is further implying that this man holds a position in the community where he would be required to make big decisions, possibly even for the community. This man clearly has the means to give, and his doing so graciously.
The men kneeling at the rich man's feet also tell a tale. We van tell by the patchwork style clothing, the tousled hair, and the fact that they are almost seeming to beg that these men are indeed financially in dire straights.
This card seems like its meaning should be straight forward, a message of sharing wealth; yet there is a deeper meaning of equal exchanges. Often in life we are the giver, but often we are the receiver. Is one man better than the other? No, rather this card shows that at anytime we could be either man. Wealth is fluid, ebbing and flowing like the waters, and so this card reminds us of the delicate balance of the circle of the wheel of life.
Another great meaning to take from this card is the idea of who gains the most from this "transaction?" Does the poor men gain more from the gift of funds they so desperately desire? Or does the wealthy man gain more in the satisfaction of helping another man? Perhaps the wealthy man, having once been poor is paying forward a blessing done to him. Both sides reap the rewards of this act of generosity and lack of judgement, and in helping each other the community grows in strength and in bonds. A message to a querent might well be to accept what you're offered now, it may be that in the future you'll have a chance to restore the balance by helping out another as you were helped.
Six of Pentacles - Reversed
When we reverse the meaning of the six of pentacles it is realized that there is no money to share. The querent may want to share in order to solve a problem, but finds themselves short of cash. Likewise, they may need some generosity in order to survive, but there is no one willing to give them a helping hand.
Nine of Pentacles
Nine of Pentacles
As one first looks at this card, the amount of yellow in this card is almost drowning all of the other colours out. Those who have taken our class on colour may remember that the colour yellow has had documented psychological effects on the body that create a sense of cheerfulness and overall positivity, and thus the artist has deliberately set the tone for this card through the use of colour. As we continue to look through the image take note of the colours as it will play a very large part in the interpretation throughout.
As you glance at the two images you will notice a difference in the gown of the woman, this difference can be seen from deck to deck. The symbol is actually flowers, although for many they feel it closely resembles the symbol for woman; both answers could be arguably be correct at the same time. One has to wonder if the artist intentionally picked a floral design that would also look like the symbol for feminine energy furthering the idea of feminine strength that begins to build the message in this card.
Notice the shrubbery, these are grapevines. Grapes have long been symbolic of wealth and abundance. Not only are the grapes plentiful in this image, but if one were to once again use knowledge of colour here the grapes have been choosen not as a red or green hue but purple. Purple is the colour of royalty and wealth as it was the most difficult colour to obtain at this time.
Validating the notion of authority is the presence of the falcon (peacocks in some deck renditions). Falconry has long been the sport of royalty in which falcons and other raptors (like hawks) are trained for hunting purposes. The falcon sports keen intellect and inexhaustible focus.
Castle symbol meanings deal with goals. Castles are physical representations of our need to build (block by block) upon a strong foundation in order to obtain our goals. Castles may also deal with sheltering ourselves or limiting ourselves from reaching our goals. They are also a symbol of obtaining our desires within the whole (community).
The Snail's symbolism in this card deal with steady footing and stability. Snails carry their homes upon their backs which is symbolic of carrying our security in our hearts (security and happiness being an inside job). Snails are also symbols of slow (but steady) progress. Notice the spiral motif found on the shell of the snail, spirals signify a radiating consciousness, and an inner-centeredness that exudes outwardly.
Nine of Pentacles is about a person who has worked hard to create a life of abundance, and now the "fruits of their labour" is about to blossom. After all your hard work you can finally sit back, relax and enjoy the luxuries and pleasures of the good life – money, leisure time, fun, material comfort and rest. You deserve it! While you may not be at the finish line just yet, this is your opportunity to acknowledge your achievements and re-energise yourself for the final phase.
Nine of Pentacles - Reversed
When we look at the reverse meaning it is a directive to start focusing on and nurturing your own independent life. In today's modern world it is easy to get so caught up in the lives of others and how they impact our lives that we sometimes forget who we are, where we started, where we were going, or to tend to the ground beneath our own two feet in the spiritual sense.
When I see the nine of pentacles I often relay to the querent that they are not being true to their inner self, perhaps they are not surrounding themselves with nurturing people who can help them to become the best version of themselves. Take time to create and cultivate what is deeply within, be authentic, be confidently and live your own truth. The more one lives their own truth, the more one can and will attract like-minded people.
Also living your truth means finding it. Sometimes intuition can guide to specific things that don't make sense. Follow it whatever it is: documentary films/books/etc about a specific topic ; a particular celebrity that will help illuminate goals; spiritual work that will help keep more in tune with oneself and surroundings or something in the arts. While seeking out ones authentic self though, do not be afraid to let go of things that no longer serve. That is sometimes part of what a person needs to learn, and will help continue to step into full alignment.
Queen of Pentacles
As one first looks at this card, the amount of yellow in this card is almost drowning all of the other colours out. Those who have taken our class on colour may remember that the colour yellow has had documented psychological effects on the body that create a sense of cheerfulness and overall positivity, and thus the artist has deliberately set the tone for this card through the use of colour. As we continue to look through the image take note of the colours as it will play a very large part in the interpretation throughout.
The woman on the card sits on a throne of white, again remembering colour white is about purity and innocence. The throne itself having images of animals and fruits, this starts to give us an impression of the type of queen she is.
The crown upon the Queen's head, of course once again using the colour yellow, has a red caterpillar shaped horseshoe; the horseshoe being a symbol of luck and the red being a colour of action, generosity, warmth, loving, hardworking, and the kind of power that leaders need to be successful. Caterpillars represent big changes and signify transitions that will be good or bad depending on the seeker's development of growth. In addition to luck, the horseshoe represents protection from people who bring the archetype into bad luck and also symbolizes “Aladdin's Lamp," the magical lamp that brings the genie to grant wishes.
The Queen sits holding a pentacle, a sign of coins or increases in wealth, that is coloured yellow. One might think to over look this yellow coin as most of the card is yellow but, the yellow is solidifying the message of positivity in financial affairs. Another good way this would be interpreted is that the Queen has money because of her ability to invest wise, and save wisely. As a financially wise woman, she will as a result be more adept to care for her family/kingdom/etc. because she spends wisely.
The green Head scarf cascading down the Queen's back is also a small but interesting part of this card. Green has always been symbolic of wealth, but also of the earth. This is the artists way of telling us this person is grounded, and most likely motherly - like mother earth.
The nearby mountains in the background represent goals are in process. The color of the mountains represents the archetypes' thoughts about their goals, blue is often indicative of luck and a good indicator of one who is good with coming up with money making ideas. This can also be seen in the Queen's face as she looks to the pentacle, perhaps she is planning or coming up with a money making idea; or weighing the options to see if it is a wise investment of time and money.
The tulips represent the spring season, and spring being implied is a season of growth and fertility in all things. They also signify that something is going to open up and unfold and they indicate the time of a new beginning.
The rabbit, in the lower right corner, represents growth, sexuality, fertility and family, suggesting that the archetype has a family. The rabbit can be difficult to see, but this is the artists way of telling us this is solidifying the message of the card and not a focal point.
The Queen of Pentacles is practical, grounded and wise. She knows what she wants. She follows through with her plans in a way that can leave the rest of us marveling at her steadfastness and straightforwardness. This is not a woman who wears her heart on her sleeve, rather, she knows that if she wants something she needs to roll her sleeves up and put in the work to get it.
Now you know what you are up against, what will you do if she is in your life? Here's a few hints on what not to do. Do not get in her way if she is in the middle of something as she is systematic and goal orientated when she is working. Do not think you can pull the wool over her eyes or play with her emotions, as she is too grounded and practical to be messed around with emotionally. Do not expect her to always clean up after you, whether this be physically or emotionally. If she is laying down the foundations for you to be able to grow within yourself, she will expect to see some improvement, and most likely mastery, in what she is teaching you. She will not always be amenable to helping you out.
Does she sound like someone you would wish to have in your life? She is wonderful to have around when everything falls apart because she will stand firm and see things through to the end. She is great with finances and all things practical and is often a hard worker as she knows that hard work pays off. She is a loyal and practical friend, and a patient and giving partner. In other words she will not let you down and will expect the same support from you
If you can take a leaf from this Queen's book, you'll know that good things come to those who put the time and effort into achieving their goals. You'll appreciate the importance of stopping to smell the flowers and cultivating abundance, prosperity and beauty in your surroundings. You may be laying the groundwork for your future through focusing on your education or professional credentials. You could also be building a solid foundation for your personal relationships or fortifying your existing connections with friends and family members. Whatever it is you want to be thinking right now how you can create the bountiful and plentiful life you so deserve. Take some time right now to think about “business;" as in how you deal with security and what steps you've made toward planning for your future. It may require you to make some short-term sacrifices. But what you gain in return — through hard work, discipline and perseverance — will make it all worthwhile in the end.
Astrologically, the Queen of Pentacles is related to the zodiac sign of Taurus (needs to feel secure and does not like taking risks), the fixed element of earth (stable, receptive, sensuous, stubborn, resists change initiated by others, “garden of earthly delights").
The Queen of Pentacles astrological relatives are the planet Venus (Venus is the morning and evening star that guides you to higher ideals. However, Venus is beauty or the beast, the beauty of a relationship that grows, or the beast of a relationship contract that could not achieve resolution and balance).
The energies of Venus make the Queen charming, able to takes risks for love, social, but also stubborn. Mercury (the speed with how you gather information and think), and Saturn (the structured teacher, lord of karma and lessons to be learned through trial and error).
Timing is usually immediate or within 1-3 days, or related to the spring season.
The Queen's Meditation:
Step into a quiet, sacred space. Sit or lay comfortably, relax your body, soften your skin. Breathe slowly and deeply. Silently to yourself say the words "SO Hum". On your inhale say "SO" and on your exhale say "Hum". In Sanskrit, SO Hum means "I Am"! I AM one with all and with myself. Find the balance within and remember that everything you need, EVERYTHING, you already have inside of you!
Queen of Pentacles - Reversed
When the Queen of Pentacles is reversed it may be that you have become absorbed in your work and neglect your family. You may become unsure of what area of life (career, work, financial portfolio) to invest in. You may become isolated, stay at home, and neglect your friends. You may smother rather than nurture your loved ones.
Fehu
Fehu
Fehu is about great luck, goals, and even about love coming true. This is not a a gift as you will see in another rune, rather this is about hard work, dedication, and even conquest.
This rune can be reversed, and when reversed it can mean that the querent may loose all they have conquered or acquired thus far. Learn the lesson of the rune, and be wary of those around that would seek to undo you.
Death
Death
This card has a lot of symbolism, and with a card so full of images it can be hard to really see all of the message; thus I believe that this card is the most feared. People see the word death, or the skull rider and the movie reel in our heads begins swimming with every movie that had a "psychic" who "read" cards and portrayed the protagonists doom, or those nearest to the antagonist's doom. This card is not at all gloom and doom to me, rather it can be very comforting.
For now we will bypass the obvious image of the rider, and instead look to the flag the rider carries. The black in the flag not only draws your eye to the object on the flag, but the nature of the flag's colours are important. A black background with a solid white image, the idea here shows balance or opposites; much like a yin and yang. While black is a grounding colour, as it absorbs all light, white is the colour that reflects all energy and is thus why white is used to remove negativity and encourage forgiveness. A blossoming flower often depicts spring and renewal, and a winter white flower often is a flower that blooms in winter marking the start of the earliest moments of spring; and mixed with the symbolism of colour in this card the blossoming flower inspires a feeling of rebirth and starting fresh and new. It should also be noted that the flower here is circular, much like everything else in life as a cycle. This reminds us that things keep moving, and learning how to adapt and change makes us wiser and helps us on our ultimate life path.
The horse that the rider is on is another great use of colour and image to get an important concept across. The horse, standing tall, has his leg in mid trot. A horse is not going to trot if it is exhausted or in a rush, this shows that there is not rushing the ideas behind this card even when there is trauma all around him. The colour of the horse, again being white, is important as it reminds us of the purity of the horse, much like the white knights of England used and thus riders on white horses were heralded as saving one from something bad.
In the far back right corner, gates to a city with a sun rising can be seen. To many this imagery may go unnoticed, but it helps to build strength in the understand that the world keeps moving on in spite of the trauma around the rider. The sun is always rising and setting, and the wheel forever keeps turning, and so we must not stay frozen in the traumas that lay at our feet but accept what has happened, learn from it, and learn how to move through and past in order to continue on our life's path and purpose.
This concept that is building is further solidified as we look to the boat, still in the dark of the early hours, is heading towards its next destination. One could argue that this boat is trying to fish, but there are no nets out and the sails are up with winds pushing them; boaters recognize this as a boat heading towards a destination, possibly even exploring new land.
The rider is very unique, a skeletal figure sits upon this trotting horse as though it were a living breathing man; this is how the creator(s) of this deck want us to understand that this is most likely the incarnation or embodiment of Death itself. The black colouring furthering this ominous feeling led more credence to the idea that this rider is to be Death. Interestingly, it is the armor that the rider wears that makes us really think about what the artist(s)/creator(s) wanted us to know about this rider. The armor is that of a knight or possible a royal, or this armor could be symbolic of the idea that armor is protective, and thus Death can not be killed. The idea that Death is not portrayed in a dark shroud with a scythe is an interesting choice to make mention of.
Besides and around the rider we do see a King (emperor) who appears to have passed on, his crown and gold scepter have fallen, symbolizing lost power and control.. The queen(empress, fool's mother) is stricken with fear and is surrendering to Death, but the child(possibly even a representation of the fool) has no fear because his youth and naiveté prevent him from understanding what is going on. The religious figure(Hierophant) shrouded in gold, having no fear of death because of his faith, holds his hands upright as in a stance of offering, possibly in a plea for Death/the rider to accept the King's soul as an offering or to take this soul with him to an eternal and peaceful resting spot. The idea here is that death does come, as part of the cycle of life, but since Death is depicted here as a knight the impression is left with a reader that Death's responsibilities make for a purification of sorts. This starts building on the concept that this card is not about death in the literal sense, but rather that all things have a time of ending that can allow for purification and rebirth.
The path of death represents transformation, restructure and rebirth. Scorpio, the zodiac sign of intensity, rules the Death card. This intensity can manifest as desire, motivation and determination, or as feelings of vengeance, suspicion, intolerance, and violence.
If the Death card comes out on the first card of your reading in the positive position, you need to prepare for a major change and understand that transformation is knocking at your door. You are asked to step away from the past because a new opportunity is opening for you. If you do not listen, you might learn a lesson that will be painful. If the Death card shows up in the outcome of the reading in a positive position, you will face the future, and accept the changes you need to make, and you will let go of an old lifestyle that was not working for you.
The Death card is enumerated thirteen, the number of transformation — the end of an outdated way of thinking or of an outgrown lifestyle that was not good for you.
Death - Reversed
If one reverses the ideas of the Death card, then the idea that something does not come to an end, or it does not die is the most obvious choice. This initially seems like a great thing, especially if its a favourite TV show, book, or particular phase in your life where you feel comfortable. You don't really want something to not end, after all nothing can be great and perfect forever. Without the downs we can not understand or appreciate the ups. Without an end, a beginning isn't as magnificent. This stagnant aspect defines the ideas behind complacency, and complacency has no passion or spark; which means creativity is lost.
If we see the reversed as a blocked interpretation, does this card allow for the death or ending of something? The real energy of the card here is about that time of grief that leads to re-birth. If this is blocked, then the querent can't grieve. They can't face or relieve the pain of loss. They remain at one end of the tunnel, refusing or unable to transverse it and pushing away the chance at re-birth.
This can also mean that the querent may be in a state of depression that stems from the refusal to accept change. Depression of course having its own complications, can indeed lower our natural vibration thus manifesting or attracting lower vibrating energy causing a cyclical result.
Timing is 1 – 30 days.
Wheel Of Fortune
Wheel of Fortune
The first image that stands out to most is the large bronze disc perfectly centered on the card, this disc is illustrated with a mix of letters and arcane Hebrew symbols. The disc being round symbolizes that much like life there is no true beginning or end, imagine if you will the age old questions of which came first the chicken or the egg; and impossible question as it has not start or end regardless of which you choose.
Starting at the top and moving clockwise, the letters on the disc spell: T, A, R, O … with the word TAROT forming when you return to the spot where you started. This reminds us that the tarot is also cyclical in nature, and the path the fool follows may not truly have an end or beginning as it is forever restarting.
Atop the disc sits a blue Egyptian Sphinx holding a sword, the sword shows his status as a strong protector. The Sphinx on the top of the wheel also can represent life’s riddles.
Below the Sphinx, rising up counterclockwise is a red humanoid body with what appears to be a hairless wolf’s head. Heading down the left side of the wheel is a golden snake. The snake is a reference to the tree of knowledge from which the snake tempted Adam. The red humanoid figure with the dog’s head seems like some ominous demon, but this figure represents our shadow side, the inner animal we must confront as we evolve. And so the riddle encircling the wheel is to know ourselves in order to maximize the whims of fortune.
A clear baby blue sky with four perfectly white puffy clouds, one in each corner and a winged animal reading a book. The clouds are a perfect representation of the heavens, and the books of course being symbolic of knowledge; together these tell the reader that the knowledge of these beings are of a celestial nature.
There is an eagle in the upper right corner, a winged lion below him, a winged bull in the lower left, and an angel above him. The four corners are occupied by the symbols for the fixed signs of the zodiac. Tarot cards borrow illustrations from many traditions and the zodiac is among them. The lion is Leo and the bull is Taurus, the angel represents Aquarius and the eagle is the higher echo of Scorpio. The sense of destiny is confirmed in fixed zodiac signs as these are personality types that hold steady toward the inevitable.
The Wheel of Fortune is about life’s ups and downs, or could be viewed as luck and change. The wheel symbolizes completeness as well as the rise and fall of fortunes and the message that what goes around comes around. Almost every definition of this card indicates abundance, happiness, elevation, or luck; a change that just happens, and brings with it great joy.
Sometimes with this card a querent can feel as if you are on a merry go round and don’t know where to get off as the querent is never sure if it is the right choice or not. Perhaps its not a spinning feeling rather something is going on in the querent’s mind but they are not ready yet to set in stone what the final decision will be. If your querent is waiting for something or someone to give them an answer the Wheel of Fortune shows that this answer may not be forthcoming quickly.
Plans, thoughts and actions need to be thought through more thoroughly and every aspect of the decision looked at. It may be frustrating if the querent is the one in this position and if they are waiting for an answer just think of how frustrating it is for the person who cannot make up their mind. At least they are looking at every angle to the question and not rushing in with their thoughts quickly.
Others may hold some of the answers the querent seeks before the querent knows their own decision. Frustrations may be experienced around waiting for an outcome that seems to have gone on forever but in reality not much time has passed. It is only the whirlpool of indecision that makes it seem as if time is of the essence and a decision must be made.
Keep in mind that if the querent makes a decision quickly then it may be the wrong decision for them in the long run as they didn’t wait for all the facts to come to hand. Likewise, if the querent is waiting for a decision from someone else on what they are doing then the querent really doesn’t want to upset the apple cart!
As much as the Tarot is about what a querent can do to change their life or self, there are cards that admit that sometimes you just get lucky. Sometimes things happen to you over which you have no control, and you rise of fall on that turn of the wheel.
This is the card about how we sometimes find ourselves soaring up or down on life’s Ferris wheel. The Wheel can mean movement, change or evolution, and in that respect it can be about how we all change positions, some of us rising some of us falling, some dropping to a nadir, some reaching a zenith.
Most of the time, however, this card suggests that such changes will bring with them good fortune. The person you’re reading for is going to get that money, that job, that promotion, that marriage proposal, that break they’ve been waiting for.
Call it karmic payback for all the good things they’ve done in life - destiny or just luck - but whatever lotteries are out there, large or small, they’ve just won one.
The Wheel of Fortune- Reversed
The Wheel of Fortune is about Luck, about transitions and changes, sometimes about Karma. Generally speaking, it is about things that happen to us that change our lives instead of things we ourselves do to create a change.
Usually the Wheel is read positively as moving up. There is luck and good fortune in it, the implication that we are going to be moving up (deservingly) while someone else (deservingly) moves down. Thus, the opposite would be, quite simply, bad luck, misfortune instead of heading up to the top of the wheel, we’re going to be hitting the bottom. As with good luck, there is nothing to be done about bad luck but accept it and make the best out of it.
If we read the energy as blocked, then we have to assume that the wheel wants to move up, wants to turn, but isn’t being allowed to or is stuck. Without changes the querent can feel as if they are not going anywhere. The problem is, that the querent might not be able to alter this as the Wheel’s energy usually comes from without.
There seems, on the surface, little difference if we turn this card upside-down - it’s a wheel, a circle, with no top, no bottom. And yet, using Rider-Waite, we can see a change. The Sphinx is at the bottom. The “Set” creature (chaotic/devilish creature) is at the top. The Serpent switches sides and is moving up instead of down.
To understand, think of it this way. The Sphinx is at the top, hovering above the Ferris wheel. You ride up to talk to the Sphinx. Then you ride down and have to deal with Set. Then back up again. Reverse the card and the implication is that when you rise to the top, you meet Set instead of the Sphinx! What ought to be good luck is going to be bad. In this case, the promotion that should give you what you want, that ought to be good fortune, lands you in hell instead. This is a bit worse than just “bad luck.” The idea here is that the external forces creating that luck are unreliable; you can’t trust the luck you’re getting to be what it seems.
The Heirophant
This card has a lot of symbolism happening, and if one were not really looking deeply at the card little cues to the depth of this card could easily be overlooked. The main figure in this card is draped in what could easily be described as a luxurious heavy red cloak. The white trim, which would have been white fur at this time, also shows that this particular outfit is one of power, prestige, and wealth. Looking at the cloak one would notice that the white trim is "dotted" with crosses, this outfit can also be seen on the early Pope's of the Roman Catholic Church. This attire was very traditional, thus telling us that the power and prestige here is of a traditional structured nature.
Continuing with the theme of tradition and order, although at first glance it may not appear as such, are two bald monks bowing at the feet of the main figure. In this time, monks would shave their heads like this as a sign of humility. The bowing monks are very symbolic of one humbling themselves before the tradition of religious and spiritual order of things. Imagine if you will almost embracing and embodying the ideas of status quo.
At the feet of the main figure two keys can be seen overlapping. Remembering and understanding that Tarot was artistically designed by monks themselves, one looking at the meaning would recognize these keys to be symbolic of St. Peters keys, keys that grant one access to heaven itself. To have these keys St. Peter is not only humbling himself before god, but also his religion and faith; again reaffirming the ideas the monks symbolism.
The crown upon the main figures head is truly a beautiful and powerful symbolism of Christ as a man. Notice that the crown is not one layer of jewels, but three. Three being Christ's number and also very symbolic of the idea that Christ is father of kings.
Finally we have the two solid pillars in the background. The pillars placed in the background was not accidental at all, but purposefully done as these pillars represent Law and Liberty. At the time that these cards were artistically made, faith and religion presided over all, and so Law and Liberty would have bowed down to God in much the same manner of humility. Today's Law is a bit different than the Law of years past, but the idea is the same - heavy is the head that wears the crown and passes judgement.
The Hierophant, whose path represents the sacred rules and vows of society and tradition, is the spiritual teacher, shaman or medicine man who will help you through the most challenging times of your life; similar to what the Pope stands for in the Roman Catholic church. The Hierophant as Chiron*, the wounded healer, represents the area of life where you feel different, isolated, and unable to heal yourself because of a difficult experience. However, this difficult experience might become a beneficial gift, one that may help you heal others? The Hierophant is a healer of sorts, and represents the Shaman whose purpose is helping you to find the healing that you need during the most trying and challenging times of your life. This healer may be a counselor or another person similarly trained to help others.
If the Hierophant comes out as the first card of your reading, you might be in a hurry to get sound advice from a reliable person you can trust, or you might feel an inner calling to help someone. If the Hierophant comes out as the outcome card, in the positive position, you may meet a spiritual teacher, shaman, mentor, or counselor who will help you, or you may be asked to teach and help others. You might hear that "inner call from above" guiding and directing you to your true life's path. Your work will bring you abundance, growth and opportunity.
This card represents the vows that you take throughout your life, the connection to society, marriage, religion, work, and anything involving large groups. The Hierophant represents the rules of these organizations and is a teacher who enters your life to help you connect with your higher spiritual side. Every group has rules, and if you follow their rules as a member of the group, they will accept you. If you flout the group's rules, they will demand that you beg mercy for your transgression, and will shun you if you do not comply. (Almost the way some religions sects may feel at times) If you reject the rules of society and establish a personal code of conduct, your peers will brand you a rebel. Regardless, God gives you the choice to live as you see fit, and it cannot be denied that everyone who walks the Earth has been or will be a rebel at some point in their lives. (this is basically the ideas of free-will) This could be the time when you hear the inner call from above to work in a career to help others, or to work in a career of spirituality.
The Heirophant - Reversed
You are rebellious, inflexible, a rule-breaker, have fixed beliefs and you are shunned by society, and restricted because you want to live by your personal code and not the code of others. The groups you belong to are not flexible, and they require extreme conformance to all of their rules. Disagree, and you will be shunned and removed from that group.
Note: There are hidden prophecies related to Tarot cards that are enumerated five. These cards represent the time of an unknown, unexpected change being revealed; in truth its more prophetic in nature than on a timeline. The universe will redirect your path and change the direction you are headed, a sometimes painful experience. The Hierophant holds the keys to secret knowledge and the hidden prophecy.
The Story of Chiron, The Greek Hierophant
In Greek Mythology, you meet Chiron, the wounded healer. Saturn (immortal god) fell in love with a sea-nymph named Philyra (mortal woman). They had an affair and since Saturn was married, Philyra and Saturn turned themselves into horses to be incognito. Philyra became pregnant and delivered a bastard child named Chiron. She was so ashamed of Chiron because he was born a centaur (half horse-half man, half mortal-half immortal) that she abandoned him. Chiron grew up alone, in isolation.
Chiron did not become a savage as did most centaurs since Apollo (sun god) and Artemis (goddess of the moon) adopted and educated him, allowing him to reach his highest potential. He was smart, compassionate, and became a talented musician, healing physician, priest, archer, and tutored foster children. He was made king of the centaurs because of his great wisdom. Although he was a great healer, when Chiron was struck with a poison arrow he was unable to heal himself. Because he was half immortal he did not die, but his mortal side felt the pain of his wound. He made a deal with Zeus, planned his death, and Zeus made Chiron part of the constellation of Sagittarius.
