Tour Highlights of Deccan Odyssey Train Journey
Deccan Odyssey is the brainchild of the Maharashtra Tourism and Development Corporation (MTDC), launched on 16th January, 2004. Not many people know this that it was the second luxury train to be launched after the success of the famous Palace on Wheels.
The week long journey offered by this luxury tourist train encompasses Sindhudurg, Goa, Vasco, Kolhapur, Daulatabad, Ajanta & Ellora and Nashik. The two day halt in Goa is the result of the recent repackaging of the itinerary of this luxury train. Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai is the point of embarkation and disembarkation of this train. Here in this post, I am highlighting a few destinations covered during this luxury train tour.
Sindhudurg
Associated with the famous Maratha ruler ‘Shivaji Raje Bhosale’, Sindhudurg is a fortress positioned on an island in the Arabian Sea. The fort was built by Shivaji’s master architect Hiroji Indalkar in 1664. The fort comprises of zigzag ramparts with 42 bastions and required 72,576 Kg of iron for the construction of the huge curtain walls and bastions. This small town abounds with beaches, backwaters, waterfalls and pilgrimage sites.
Kolhapur
Nestled on the banks of the river Panchganga, Kolhapur is a popular destination in the state of Maharashtra. Legend has it that goddess Mahalakshmi killed a demon known as Kolhasur to save the local populace. It is the place where India’s first feature film ‘Raja Harishchandra’ was conceptualized. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the Mahalaxmi temple and the local bazaars famous for Kolhapuri footwears.
Ajanta & Ellora Caves
A perfect example of human artistry, these caves are the living symbols of the ancient Indian civilization. While Ajanta caves are housed with paintings and sculptures related to the Jataka tales, Ellora caves epitomize harmony between Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.
Nashik
One of the holiest destinations of the Hindu pilgrims, Nashik is one of the four venues of the famous Kumbh Mela. There is a mythological legend associated with it which says that Lord Rama spent 14 years of his exile in the Tapovan near Nashik. Also the city of Nashik is home to one of the 12 jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

The Indian Maharaja – Don’t Just Travel Like a Maharaja, Live Like One.
Most foreign visitors to India look to explore India’s rich cultural side that fascinates the world. Being historically and culturally of great significance, India is a major cog in the Asian cultural wheel. When Indian Tourism board realized this, they introduced several tour packages that enabled guests to discover the cultural pots of India. this included tours to destinations such as Delhi, Rajasthan, Kerala, Goa, Varanasi etc. One such innovation was the introduction of luxury trains. Indian luxury trains, like the Indian Maharaja and the Palace on Wheels, are today considered at par with the best luxury trains of the world.
The Indian Maharaja, in particular, has risen to be one of the most popular luxury trains in India today. The train is a virtual five star hotel on wheels and has everything, maybe more, that you normally associate with a luxury hotel. The Indian Maharaja has 11 passenger car – each more aesthetically done than the other. Each car has up to 4 cabins which offer a choice between twin beds and queen size beds. There are 2 presidential suites, each with its own bedroom, living room and en-suite bathroom. That is luxury exemplified! It is sometimes fascinating to see all the facilities the suites afford when space is at such a premium. And yes, you get your own butler who will be dedicated to your services.
Moving on, there are several deluxe cabins categorized as Gold and Silver class. Each cabin is luxuriously adorned and boasts of features that can put a 5 star hotel room to shame. In-cabin facilities include air conditioning, electronic safe, direct dial telephone, LCD television, wall to wall carpeting, wardrobe and bathrooms with shower. Each carriage enjoys the services of a dedicated butler who caters to guests’ whims round the clock.
Dining is another key service where the Indian Maharaja simply excels. 2 multi-cuisine restaurants dish out an array of Indian, Marathi, Goan, Chinese, Rajasthani and Continental delicacies to tempt guests’ tastebuds. However, it is advisable that guests make prior reservations to avoid seating issues. Both restaurants afford great ambience and in the backdrop of hills and vast desert stretches whizzing by, dining aboard the Indian Maharaja Train is truly an experience to savor. The bar is well stocked with domestic and international brands of liquor. The bartenders conjure the finest of cocktails without breaking a sweat. It must be noted that all drinks are exclusive of the tariffs and must be paid for separately.
As and when the wonderful 7 night, 8 day journey ends, guests are escorted back to the airport from where they can board the flight back home.
Deccan Odyssey: redefining opulence with every journey
It was after the spectacular success of ‘Palace on Wheels' that such trains were also conceived for other parts of India. It was then, that Maharastra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) came up with the idea of a luxury train, far surpassing other Indian luxury trains in opulence and comfort, traversing through the very best of Central Western part of India.
Finally after a lot of hard work, and a long wait, this blue limousine rolled on its wheels from the iconic Chaatarpati Shivaji Terminal, Mumbai, on the dawn of 16th January, 2004. Soon, this courageous initiative to expand luxury trains to other parts of India was joined by the prestigious Taj group of hotels, who offered a 5 star hotel facility on-board to the guests.
The destinations on the route of this train were carefully chosen to make sure that the guests on-board can witness the rich diversity of flora and fauna of Maharastra, all the important historical places, the vividness of the landscapes, and have a peep into the rich cultural heritage of the state.
The 8 days/7 night journey on-board this train will take you through the Konkan coast, Deccan region, and through the ‘Pearl of Orient' Goa. A short itinerary of the train is as follows:
Day 1: Mumbai
Day 2: Sindhudurg-Tarkarli Beach
Day 3: Goa
Day 4: Goa-Vasco
Day 5: Kolhapur
Day 6: Aurangabad
Day 7: Ajanta-Nashik
Day 8: Mumbai
The complete journey will introduce its guests to the rich diversity of inherited cultural traditions in India, and the multiplicity of faiths practiced in India. While Goa is majority Christian, Kolhapur majority Hindu, Ajanta is famous for its Buddhist caves, Aurangabad has a significant Muslim population and Mumbai is home not just to Hindus and Muslims, but also to Christians, Buddhists and Parsis.
Facilities offered on-board
In Deccan Odyssey, one can witness the perfect delicacy, blending into perfect comfort. The state-of-the-art amenities available on-board will make your every single day of the journey, a memorable experience. The facilities on-board can match the services offered in a 5 star hotel. The facilities offered include: regal class cabins, multi-cuisines restaurants, sitting lounge, high-tech conference car and a rejuvenating health spa.
Dinning The train has two multi-cuisine restaurants: Peshwa 1 and Peshwa 2. The lavish interiors of these restaurants, along with the most delicious Indian, Oriental and Continental food makes them a treat for everyone.

The elegant and highly decorative bar offers its guests, the choice to choose from a wide variety of wines and spirits collected from all parts of the world, along with non-alcoholic beverages. The bar is the live wire of The Deccan Odyssey Train , and the most popular meeting point on-board. Culturally Potent Destinations Covered by Royal Rajasthan on Wheels
India is a dream destination for art and culture lovers. Right from religious shrines to architectural wonders, the country is home to all. In this blog post, I will highlight the cultural significance of these two destinations that attract travelers from all around the world.
Varanasi
Fondly known as the ‘spiritual capital of India’, Varanasi is largely visited for its bathing Ghats flanked by river Ganges and number of Hindu temples which include Tulsi Manas, Sankat Mochan, Bharat Mata and Kashi Vishwanath temple- famous as jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. The sacred Ghats such as Manikarnika, Dasashwamedh and Panch-Ganga are believed to have the divine power of providing salvation. Being a spectator to evening Ganga aarti will give a perfect closure to your cultural tour in Varanasi.
Khajuraho
“A sensuous poetry in stones,” this is probably the best explanation for Khajuraho Group of Monuments, recognized as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Built by Chandela dynasty between 950 A.D. and 1050 A.D., these temples are dedicated to lord Shiva, Vishnu and Jain Tirthnkras. These temples are outstanding examples of Indo-Aryan architecture and depict images of Hindu deities, mythological characters & animals and erotic figures exhibiting Kamasutra positions. An evening son-et-lumiere in the compounds of western temple complex will mark the crescendo of the day.
