[david] “look, it definitely honors me and you know how I feel about you.” [kissing her hand]

[agnes provocative] “do I now?”

[david] “I mean, don’t you? I’m crazy about you, agnes!”

[agnes chuckling] “and here I thought you were gonna give me some crap about not looking for something serious at the moment or whatever.”

[david] “I’m not actually - which doesn’t mean that I want things to change between us. in fact - hear me out, it is now that we can truly enjoy getting to know each other without actively hurting someone else, isn’t it?”

[david] “what exactly does that mean, agnes? ‘us’, I mean? you’ve just been broken-up with. roxanne and you - you’ve been together for what, almost a year?”

[agnes] “yes, I’m aware, david. don’t get me wrong, it’s still a lot to process and I am willing to make things right with ro eventually. but obviously there had been a reason why we broke up?”

[david remaining quiet]

[agnes continuing softly] “and that reason is you, babe.”

[david] “damn. so you think she’s done with you for good?”

[agnes] “I’d figure as much? I mean, of course I feel bad - I know we messed up but... isn’t that also a good thing - for us?”

and there it was: “us”, he thought. david had been putting off this conversation for as long as possible and it had made him feel horrible. was it because he was scared of her expectations of him? was he even willing to meet them and possibly commit again? sure, he couldn’t know what agnes wanted for sure, but from he could guess a lot from the way she’d been acting.
