NUMB3RS -> Don & Charlie Moments ↳ 4.11 (2/2)
i've been thinking about numb3rs for a few days (and already started another rewatch)(damn you i have to pirate it because it's not available to stream on anything i have or have access to) i geninunely think david is our pov character and hear me out on this.
usually a show/book/movie starts when something "new" happens. x files starts when scully gets assigned to the x files. newsies starts when davey and les join the manhattan newsies. percy jackson starts with the strange behavior leading up to him finding out he's a half-blood. it's the thing. it's the hero's journey.
you would think numb3rs starts with charlie working consistently with don, but charlie has worked with don on cases before, sure only involving numbers or accounting but still charlie has worked with don at the fbi. it's not unusal. even in the first episode, charlie started looking at maps and alan made sure he didn't overstep in nosing through don's files. charlie's shown interest in don's work, even if don wasn't particularly happy about it.
but numb3rs starts on david's first case with don's team. david's the one learning and growing throughout the show. sure, all of them grow! it would be a boring tv show if no one ever grew, but i feel like charlie hasn't grown as much as a pov character should. throughout the hero's journey, they need to end somewhere differently than they started.
charlie started the show teaching and he ends the show on teaching (albeit at harvard vs calsci). he does stuff in between the start and the finish (writes and publishes a book, etc), but he ends in nearly the same place (teaching with amita by his side).
david is the one who changes. he starts as a new(er) agent, the lowest rung on a ladder in a team. as an audience member we see david take more responsibility on the team. he helps mentor colby. he takes the time and effort to become the person in charge when don isn't around- and it doesn't come easy to him! he has to work and earn his place being second in command. by the end of the show he's going to lead his own team in D.C.
david is a crucial character in numb3rs, and every time i do a rewatch i cannot overstate how different the show would be if he weren't there, or how much we lose if david isn't around. i don't see a lot of people really give david his flowers, when he's the one who we're seeing the show through. we're learning about the eppes family just like david, we're learning about math and investigative work like he is. nothing works without him.
thank you david sinclair. i love you.
Numb3rs textposts bc I’ve been inspired to make them 😼
So like I’m watching this show Numb3rs and I love it, it’s a great show, it’s a cop show about these two brothers, one’s an FBI agent and the other is a mathematician and they work together to solve crimes using math while also having some good family moments, currently almost done with season 3
But anyways that’s not the point of this post
I was ranting to my friend about it cause they’re the only one that listens to me and I started ranting about the house the brothers live in
Technically it’s their dad’s house but the younger brother, the mathematician, bought it in the first season
But I was ranting about cause I was telling her how I was so confused about the layout of the house and how I think I was finally getting where each room was when they jokingly, JOKINGLY, said I should build it in mincraft
It has been five days, I should be studying for a test, and I am almost done with it
What has my life come to?
There are many reasons why I like Colby and David, but I feel like what makes it particularly appealing is that they spend two years in an incredibly trusting, effective, enjoyable relationship and then it completely falls apart and they spend the rest of the show figuring out how/if they can build it again.
I love how much work and time it takes for them to get back to something which had come easy before. And it’s not just the One Big Thing that challenges them- challenges keep coming up. Ones that would have come up anyway as they grow as professionals and as people. But because of The Big Thing, they know they have really committed to something with each other, and that they can get through this too.
