I’ve also been writing petplay erotica for a long time, and I think a serious consideration of this issue requires a little more nuance. First of all, puppies and other pets are under no obligation to be mindless fucktoys or kidnapped, transformed slaves. Does it often play out that way in fiction? Yes, and the reason is complex. It is the debasement and humiliation—the reduction of a sentient being with agency and will to a mere animal designed to please its debaser—that arouses. Note that some people are aroused by being the debaser, and some people are aroused by being debased in this way. Why? Well, power tripping fantasies aside, for those whose fetish is being made into a pet in this way, there is often a freedom that comes with total obliteration of the self. The removal of that will and agency frees them from responsibilities for their actions; they can indulge in activities they would never do as their “good” or “respectable” self, because they cannot help it. They have been “forced” into doing these things (that they want to do, but only if forced). Many people view animals as “less than” humans. It follows logically that being reduced to such a state would engender humiliation upon anyone so reduced. The appeal of reducing another to a sex object is commonplace and allows the debaser to engage in behaviors without fear of rejection. It may be that they are not interested in being a Dom(me) at all, but simply fear rejection or mockery, and therefore remove the possibility of either by causing ego death in the object of their interest and lust, rendering them a mere object upon which fantasies can be safely projected without fear of being hurt.
