The colour blue- that is my colour- and the colour blue means you have left the drabness of day-to-day reality to be transported into- not a world of fantasy, it’s not a world of fantasy- but a world of freedom where you can say what you like and what you don’t like. This has been expressed forever by the colour blue, which is really sky blue.

Louise Bourgeois - ‘Arch of Hysteria’

A key factor in determining whether a woman was hysterical was the way the their seizures presented, as found by Freud and Breuer. The arched back was a sign of hysteria, as this movement is not typical of epileptic seizures. This principle is still used to determine whether the patient is suffering from pseudo (arch) or epileptic seizures.

Anna O (Bertha Pappenheim) This Austrian-Jewish feminist with the pseudonym 'Anna O' was initially patient of Breuer's who published her case study in a collaborative book with Freud. She was diagnosed with hysteria and treated as a serious case in need of regular psychoanalysis- free association, institution and hypnosis. Whilst there were grounds to suggest a psychological condition, reading various material and studying her case has revealed that temporal lobe epilepsy was the root of her physical condition. This mistreatment of epilepsy, and indeed severe migraine, in the wake of hysteria was not unusual but in the case of Bertha Pappenheim (Anna O) the evidence of complex partial seizures was extensive.

I was introduced to Susan Hiller's works by Dr Alexandra Kokoli at art school, I have admired her work ever since and am beginning to explore it further in written work. Hiller was a huge inspiration for 'Daughters Inducing Telepathy in Dream' and Kokoli's writings on her work have been a base for my recent research exploring phenomena.
