The last thing Gintoki would’ve expected to come out of your mouth was that.
“The Shogun?” Gintoki stopped eating his parfait, astounded, his spoon mid-air. “Wants to marry you?”
It’s been a journey but you had the confidence to speak for a little longer than before and sitting with Gintoki immensely helped. Still, you were silent when you wanted to be, and there were times where conversations weren’t going to be as sweet, and this was one of them.
The Shogun saw you at Tae’s bar where you were sat in the back listening to Kagura talk about her problems: grown men acting like they can’t clean up after themselves; when you felt the stare. As a former Joi samurai, you knew what hostile stares felt like but this one was different.
It wasn't hostile; It was curiosity.
You never expected to look up and land your eyes on the Shogun. If Katsura was here, he’d have a field day with this.
“Infiltrate the palace, kill the Shogun in his sleep!”
His gaze did not waver, but a tint of red was on his cheeks, and out of respect you slightly bow and he nods in return. You thought that would be the end of it.
“So,” Toshi says, arms crossed. “What have you done now?”
You sit on the floor of your house in your best kimono, the birds chirping, the occasional clank of the shishi-odoshi being heard; you stop sipping on your tea to look up at him.
You frown. He elaborates.
“The Shogun is on your case,” Toshi says. “I heard about it from Kondo.”
On my case? Does he know about my connection to Joi?
“Sh-Shogun?” You take a sip of your tea to calm your throat.
“Rumour has it that he wants to marry you.” Toshi says, then chuckles. “I doubt Odd Jobs would allow that.”
“For the first time in his life he’s right.” Gintoki snapped, glaring at nothing in particular. “That’s not happening.”
Your brows furrow. You look at Gintoki. He has no right to tell you who you can and cannot marry. Do you want to marry the Shogun? Not really. But do you want to stay single for the rest of your life? No. You’d like to settle down again and possibly get married and own a few pets, maybe bare children if that’s what you wish, if not, stick to the pets and some solitude, but no.
Gintoki chases all your possible suitors away.
“What? You’re not seriously considering this are you?” He scoffed out a laugh. “Are you forgetting that you fought alongside us in the Joi war?”
“I fear speaking because of it,” You were offended. “Of course I remember.”
You snatch your drink, a nasty mean glare on your face, and Gintoki winced.
“Alright, my fault. Shouldn’t have said that. Still, what are you thinking?”
Matsudaira had his back to the wall, his usual collected look on his face as you were leaned against the other wall, eyes closed.
“I’m sure you’ve heard by now that the Shogun is interested in you.” Matsudaira said, looking at the sky. “Marriage is a sham if the daughter your wife bears no longer looks at you.”
You clear your throat. “That appears to be your fault.”
Matsudaira chuckled. Ignored the comment. Got down to business.
“I’m sure you’ll do what’s necessary,” He gets off the wall, hands in his pockets. “To ensure the safety of your friends.”
Right as he said that, the laughter of Shinpachi and Kagura could be heard as they chase after Gintoki, demanding that he pay them back.
Your eyes harden instantly. Jaw clenched. You look to find him, but Matsudaira was already gone.
“Gintoki, I’m not going—” You exhale sharply, gripping the table to calm your heart. You drink more tea to help your throat. It was scary to talk. “To stay single forever.”
He stared at you. Said nothing.
“I’m doing this whether you like it or not.”
Just then, Matsudaira and Kondo-san enter the shop. They had asked you to inform your ex-husband about this arrangement. Kondo was against it, knowing what Odd Jobs was like, and so was Toshi. Even Okita protested against it! But Matsudaira wasn’t having any of it: “You better make sure she tells him or I’ll tell him myself.” He cocked his gun in warning.
The times shared with Gintoki fly through your mind. Your favourite moments with him were kisses; not because of how sexual his kisses can turn, but how Gintoki treated you after. His big hands caressing your face as he pressed kisses to your face, treating your face like a map of stars. Or how his fingers would trace your eyes, whispering “they look like moons” over your mouth.
He’d treat you like you were newly married to him. Every. Single. Day. Even though you had been married to Gintoki for years.
All good things have to come to an end, right?
His expression was unreadable.
“Come on, bride. I haven’t got all day.” Matsudaira says, looking at his phone.
Kondo-san was visibly tense and uncomfortable. He knew that Odd Jobs silence meant war.
“Name-chan,” Kondo-san says awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck, grinning but he wasn’t happy with this at all. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure you’re taken care of.”
You nod at Kondo-san. Look at Gintoki. He was already staring at you.
Only this time, he was grinning.
“Do I at least get an invite?”
You were offended again. He wasn’t mad? Of course he wouldn’t be mad, he’s probably interested in Tsukuyo. He has been at Yoshiwara a lot lately, per Kagura’s reports.
Shogun-san. Gintoki had to fight back the urge to hit someone.
“Great,” Gintoki says. “Congratulations.”
You stare at him a second too long. Then, slightly bow your head, and he was tense all over again. You grab your bag and sling it over your shoulder and Kondo-san guides you outside, his hand on your back, doing his best to make sure that you were happy and comfortable.
“Odd Jobs,” Matsudaira says. “You better be on your best behaviour.”
His grin looked normal to Matsudaira but to the people that knew him, they knew that it meant one thing:
Take what’s mine and I’ll kill you.
A month had passed since your last visit with Gintoki, and you were at the Shogun’s palace, locked away in your quarters. The Shogun and his sister treated you kindly, but the former Shogun, not so much. You had to hold yourself back many times from attacking the man and insulting him back. Still, you were calm and collected.
It was the day of the engagement and shortly after, the wedding would take place. Your heart was in a frenzy as concubines and the wedding coordinator flutter all around you, doing their best to make sure you look beautiful on your wedding day.
Your Uchikake was an expression of yourself, but the man who’d be holding your arm did not define your soul, Sakata Gintoki did. You realised that on the first night of being here, or sitting with the Shogun as he politely conversed with his peers, and would jokingly tease his sister. You felt out of place, an empty shell of the woman you once were; he was kind and respectful towards you, would make you flush with his compliments, but by the end of the night, they meant nothing to you.
Sakata Gintoki drove your soul. He had your heart in his hands. And your mind would not shut up about him.
“Gin-chan,” Shinpachi said, walking beside him as Kagura took the other side. “Are you alright?”
His jaw was set in place. His eyes on the moon. Cheers could be heard as the streets were flooded with people dancing to a song that honoured the Shogun and his bride.
“I got a glimpse of her, she’s stunning!”
“I wish the Shogun and his lady a happy marriage!”
“Why wouldn’t I be?” Gintoki says, hand on his sword, grinning.
Kagura and Shinpachi share a look.
“You two know what to do right?” Gintoki says, and when they nod, his grin grew larger.
Chaos stormed inside of him.
When they nod, he pats both of them on their heads, and looked directly at the room you were in.
You rise from your spot on the floor, your face freshly powdered. Your Uchikake made the ladies squeal.
“Shogun-sama will be pleased!” One of the ladies say, and you smile, bowing in thanks.
“Thank you.” You whisper.
Kondo enters the room with Toshi and Matsudaira trails behind them.
“Name!” Kondo beamed. “You look stunning!”
You smile respectfully. “Thank you, Kondo-san.”
Toshi stared a second too long.
Matsudaira went on about his wedding day.
You meet Toshi’s gaze. He saw the anguish on your face and his fists balled. He had so much to say to you but so little time to say it.
“You’ll be alright,” Kondo says. “Just for tonight, then it’s you and the Shogun.”
Matsudaira pipes. “Don’t forget what I told you.”
“You shut up.” Toshi says to him. “If anything happens, I’ll protect you. You have my word.”
You ignore what they said and focus on the one man you care about.
Kondo and Toshi share a glance. They look at you with a face of sympathy and you nod, putting on a brave face. He wasn’t here. You exhale sharply.
Matsudaira and Kondo leave the room. Toshi stayed behind. He’d be walking you down the aisle.
You had a bouquet of flowers in your hands as you walk towards him.
You tap his mouth where the cigarette was.
“Tsk. Who says I’m removing it?” He stuck his arm out for you to loop your arm through.
“Try to find your voice if you can.” Toshi says as the door opens. “I won’t let anything bad happen to you.”
Music filled the air, slow and steady, and you wanted to hurl.
You remembered the wedding day with Gintoki, the Sensei being the one to bring you both together, whilst Sakamoto, Katsura and Takasugi stood in the crowd, clapping and cheering once you sealed your love with a kiss.
You wanted to cry but you had to do this. You hope Katsura wouldn’t be too mad about this. Toshi stuck his foot out first and you follow his steps. You look at the Shogun over your veil, and he stared at you, pink in the face, red on his nose.
You force back a chuckle.
Gintoki had a nosebleed when he saw you in your wedding dress too.
You force back the thought.
You didn’t notice two familiar faces in the crowd.
How they stare at you, in awe by your beauty, but angry that you had to do this. You didn’t think that your Kagura and Shinpachi would know that you were being threatened to marry the Shogun and that shooters have been aiming guns at them and Gintoki all month if you failed to comply?
“She’s beautiful.” Shinpachi whispered.
“Right?” Kagura whispered back.
You made your way up the steps, smiling softly, and when Toshi stops before the Shogun he respectfully bows.
Then, he was gone, and it was you, the Shogun and the priest.
The Shogun lifts the veil from your head and smiled.
He didn’t seem like himself.
Still, you couldn’t ask him now, you’d ask him later.
You both lower to sit on the ground, a table between you both. He took your hands in his.
The priest opened his mouth and spoke. The Shogun said his vows and placed the wedding ring onto your finger. And when you open your mouth to say your vows, someone screams in the audience.
Your eyes widen, your lip quirking slightly.
“Not my expensive kimono you bastard!” She screamed, kicking the guy next to her. “Who said you can put shit on me you bastard?”
The cigarette fell out of Toshi’s mouth, Kondo-san looked horrified and Matsudaira was calm.
“Get rid of her.” Matsudaira says.
‘Accidentally’ punched them in the face.
“Oh, sorry!” Shinpachi squealed. “Didn’t see you there!” Then he turned to Kagura. “Oi, didn’t you know this is a wedding? Show some respect to the Shogun!”
“What’s that bastard?!” Kagura picked up the shit and threw it at him.
Everyone screamed in disgust.
“Who wants some of Sadaharu’s poop you bastards?” Kagura grinned, throwing it up and down in the air, then tossing it in the direction of a random lady who screamed in horror.
Everyone was in an uproar.
You turn to look at the Shogun. He seemed amused.
The priest shot up, barking orders.
You lean in. “Why do you not look surprised?”
“You should have the choice whether to marry me or not. Your husband made that very clear.”
Just then, the door kicked down, and you barely hard time to process what was happening before arms gathered you and pushed you into their chest.
Familiar, warm, safe, the man who defined your soul.
“Sakata—” You let out a gasp when he grins, ripping the marriage certificate to shreds.
“What’s up with the security here?” Gintoki barked, laughing, and ran with you in his arms. “Bye bye!”
Kagura and Shinpachi follow after, laughing when shots were rang.
“Odd Jobs!” Kondo and Toshi bark at the same time.
Your eyes were wet with tears. The biggest grin ever was on your face.
Once you were away from the Shogun's palace did Gintoki finally have the confidence to place you down. Still, his hands were on you, his eyes hooded as he observed you from head to toe. You looked like a princess awaiting her royal knight to take her off her feet. Everyone knows the Prince's are corrupt in the story.
Gintoki was your knight in silver armour.
"Sakata." You manage to say his name, turning your face to meet his troubled gaze. You clear your throat.
He gathers your face in his hands, caressing your cheek with his thumb. He didn't care if your makeup was staining his hands. He needed to touch you. He leans forward, his mouth hovering over yours, and for a second your heart stopped; he moves to place a kiss to the tip of your nose.
"Name," Gintoki says. "What did I tell you before?"
You were slightly disappointed.
"You tell me everything. Everything." Gintoki whispered, squeezing you tightly. "When you're happy, when you're sad, when you're in danger, fucking tell me you beautiful piece of shit."
You place your hands over his. "To... tell you," You clear your throat. "Everything."
"And you didn't tell me this," Gintoki says, eyes narrowed. "Why?"
You scowl. Take your hand back. He noticed the ring.
A simple but expensive band with a diamond in the middle. He felt hollow at the sight of it.
You shrug your shoulders. You didn't want to answer him. He let out a huff. He'll get the answer out of you later then.
"That's a crap ring." He deadpanned, glaring at it like it was his enemy.
You smile at the sight of it. He glared at your smile.
"I should return it." You whisper.
"Tsk, forget that. Sell it and make some cash."
Gintoki stuck his tongue out immaturely. "Give it to me then and I'll sell it."
You shake your head. You weren't interested in the Shogun but he was kind to you. The least you could do was return it.
Your expression hardens, as does Gintoki's.
"So much for having them on patrol," Gintoki huffed, referring to Kagura and Shinpachi. "Get behind me."
You straighten, body tingling, and defy his order. "No." You gulp. "I'm a former Joi patriot. I can handle an angry Uncle or two."
You knew it was the Shogun's Uncle by his voice. And when his guards came running, swords pointed, and Matsudaira brought the police force with his gun pointed at you, you sadistically grin.
Gintoki had his back to yours.
The guards part like the sea for Sada Sada Tokugawa, the 13th generation Shogun.
"I knew something was wrong with you when my nephew set his eyes on you," Sada Sada says. "Whore."
You turn to Gintoki. He was seething.
"Since when were you a whore, Sakata?"
"Huh?" Gintoki turned to you. "What are you talking about you stupid woman?"
You grin. "You have been in Yoshiwara a lot. I'm surprised the former Shogun knows about you."
Sada Sada huffs. "You have some nerve, I was talking about-"
"Oh, Tsukuyo. You're jealous of her?" Gintoki grins, and you huff.
"Be quiet, Whore, I don't have time for jealousy. Unlike you who foiled my chances at marrying the Shogun."
His eyes narrowed. "A threatening chance."
"Threat or not, he was nice." You shrug, teasing him.
"Oi," Gintoki says, the two of you completely ignoring the former Shogun who was getting angrier by the second at this blatant disrespect. "Watch it."
"Kill them both!" Sada Sada bellows, and a shot was rang, but before it could hit you, Kondo and Toshi got in the way of it and deflected the bullet.
"Tosi!" You exclaim. "Kondo-san!"
"Yo, Odd Jobs' woman." Kondo-san grins.
"Tsk, idiots." Toshi smirked. "Should've known you'd try something."
Gintoki narrows his eyes at him. "Shut up," Then he turns to you. "It's Hijikata to you, not Toshi."
Toshi drags out a sigh. "We don't have time for your game of jealousy. The Shogun is here, and so are we upon his orders."
"Shige Shige is here?" You ask, voice quiet.
Gintoki didn't like how you used the Shogun's name.
You peek past Toshi's shoulder to see that the Shogun was here on his horse, ordering everyone to stand down. Begrudgingly his Uncle had no choice but to comply, and the police force went away, and the Shogun said something to Matsudaira who had no choice but to comply as well.
Then, as if sensing your gaze, his eyes land on you.
Kondo-san let out a quiet squeak and looked at Gintoki, but Gintoki had his eyes on you.
The Shogun makes a move towards you on his horse. Face stoic. But his eyes were kind. Gentle.
"A word?" The Shogun says, holding out his hand.
A vein threatened to pop on Gintoki's cheek, especially when you took his hand.
You sit on the back of his horse and the Shogun takes you out of earshot. Gintoki had to be physically restrained.
"How are you?" The Shogun asks, eyes on the rising sun.
Night had passed, day was here.
You had enough of talking for today but for the sake of getting this over with, you force the words out.
"Happy," You whisper. You look at him. "How did you find out?"
He nods in the direction of Gintoki who was currently flailing about, arguing with Toshi. You pull a face but the Shogun could see the love and care in your eyes.
"He didn't do anything, did he?"
The Shogun fought back a smile. He'd rather not state the explicit nature that the Odd Jobs crew used to stop the marriage.
"Not in particular." The Shogun responds.
You knew he was lying. Still, you keep quiet.
"No harm will come your way, or in the way of your friends."
You nod. "Listen... I am sorry this had to happen."
"Don't be," The Shogun turned to you, and placed his hand over yours.
Gintoki saw red. He shoved Kondo-san and Toshi away from him.
"Till we meet again." He says. "As friends."
You nod. Out of respect for you, he placed his hand to your head, and pulled back. When you get off the horse, Gintoki took you by the hand and helped you down.
He rode off into the sunrise.
Gintoki looked at you. You looked exhausted. He picked you up in his arms. You close your eyes.
"We'll talk about splitting the cash later."
You shake your head. "It's my money."
Gintoki scoffed. "I deserve something after saving your ass. Again, by the..." His voice grew quieter when he noticed you were asleep. He let out a tsk. "Way."
He began to walk. Kagura and Shinpachi follow in suit, the two of them looking at you in concern.
"Don't worry," Gintoki says, placing a light kiss to the corner of your mouth, feeling at ease. "She's alright."
Kagura beamed at him, Shinpachi smiled, Kondo and Toshi stare at the Odd Jobs crew and exhaled in relief.
"That could've been worse." Kondo says, rubbing his head.
Toshi smirked, lighting a cigarette. "True."
He exhaled, smoke circling around him. He then remembered the lesson he overhead Okita giving the Shinsengumi crew who was battered and beaten for ogling you.
"Rule number one," Okita taps the board, showing the first and final rule when it comes to Sakata Gintoki.
Never mess with Sakata Gintoki's woman, divorce or not, he will come for you.
