All too often, individual stories of crime victims are buried beneath a multitude of statistics. It is important to remember that for each statistic, each prosecution, and each victim rehabilitation there is a human being who has been tragically affected. It is through the voice of individual victims that we come to fully grasp the dimensions of this problem both within and outside New York City. The following eight case studies involving real people were provided by the Safe Horizon and City Bar Justice Center.
A closr look at US Citizen Victims
The International Labor Organization estimates that there are 4.5 million victims of sex trafficking worldwide.2 While the prevalence of sex trafficking in the United States is still unknown, we do know that women, children, and men are being sold for sex against their will in cities and towns in all 50 states. A shocking number of these victims are citizens of the United States. In 2014, the Urban Institute studied the underground commercial sex economy in eight U.S. cities and estimated that this illicit activity generated between $39.9 million and $290 million in revenue depending on the city.3 According to the study, pimps in one city earned an average of $32,833 per week. It is within this economy that sex trafficking thrives, and with this potential for earnings, sex trafficking is considered a lowrisk, high-reward endeavor.
The National Human Trafficking Hotline maintains one of the most extensive data sets on the issue of human trafficking in the United States. The statistics contained on this website are based on aggregated information learned through signals -- phone calls, emails, and online tip reports -- received by Hotline. The data do not define the totality of human trafficking or of a trafficking network in any given area. The National Hotline uses this data to help human trafficking victims and survivors and to provide the anti-trafficking field with information to help combat all forms of human trafficking.
