"Oh, Rod, you really cannot just show up to a rap battle without shades!" With a smile, she holds out a pair of sunglasses, one matching what she already dons on her face. "You really must look the part!"
{ ā } - He knew he was forgetting something, something important and vital and yet what it was simply couldnāt come across to him. He had his beat picked out, and he was already preparing some words to throw about⦠but it still felt incomplete. Did he forgot to invite the other participants ..?! No, that couldnāt be, he sought them out face to face to invite (or rather, challenge) them personally. Was it his sweet swag? His duds were kicking and heād speciallyĀ prepared clothing from his past wardrobe to look proper for the event. His hair was as tousled as always, but it felt fineā¦
{ ā } - Whatever was missing was something incredibly crucial, he almost felt like if he didnāt adorn this something then he may as well had lost the battle as it is. There was no way he could show up unprepared, much less for defeat.
{ ā } - Standing in place, toe tapping a quiet rhythm. He stays and ponders, exchanging glances with Sebastian as he tries to figure out the missing piece to this puzzle.
{ ā } - With quick, nimble steps that dart down the hall towards him, he looks up. Although for seconds, Rod is frozen in shock of the sudden entrance, he steadied himself. Noticing the difference in colour for the world around him, the royal colours now many shades of black and grey- thatās it...!!
{ ā } - Shades! It all clicks together, as he smiles proudly at his partner in crime as they will dominate the rapping, snapping foes ahead of them. The brother-sister duty now fully charged, and certainly unbeatable.
{ ā } - He adjusts them up on the bridge of his nose, hiding any of the frazzled features heād displayed earlier. āThank you, Em. Iām glad I have you on my side, hard to believe Iād completely forgotten. Together, letās be sure to take down Sir Fritz, in style.ā

{ ā } - His original intention was to learn about the application so that he could show Emelaigne. As of late, her smile seemed especially forced, likely because of the upcoming ball for her potential bachelor. The prince has figured that it would be nice if the siblings could spend an afternoon doing something that Em could find relaxing or fun.
{ ā } - So Rod went off to sought after someone of guidance to teach him how to show him the ropes of painting nails, hair braiding, and perhaps even face masks- whatever might help the strain from the shoulders of a princess. Thankfully, heād already had someone in mind. Ā Ā
{ ā } - Calling him out on a free afternoon after his usual trips to The Marchen eventually led him to a situation that he didnāt quite expect.Ā
{ ā } - āSo the only way to learn is experience it first hand...ā He looks at the bottle of minty greenĀ ānail polishā and his little fingerās nail thatād already been painted.Ā āItās fine to keep it on, itās a nice colour...ā No one would see considering he wore gloves most of the time anyway. What kind of colour would suit Em? Pink, maybe yellow? Something bright and cute for sure... āWait, what was it you said about girls..?! I donāt need that kind of attention..!ā Ā
konnichiwa it's rod time HERE WE GO: Cards
If one plays their chances correctly, they can gain momentum. They can go further and further until they reach the peak. For their small group of friends, this game of pretend and chance of small victory carried them far and they, they had been able to live a life of pure fun. Fate loves to toy with the most vulnerable, and no one can escape its clutches. Perhaps thatās why their happenings brought them to here, and their friend to where sheās at.
Em has to ask herself, did she play her opportunities to the best she could? Is she doing so now?
And what of Rod? Is he truly happy being a prince, with Sebby as his voice?
āRod, look! I was just thinking of reviving one of our old games. Mother found our deck recently and itās just as I remember!ā
In her hands lays the current source of her smile: a small deck of handmade cards. It wasnāt as though they hadnāt the money to afford such a small item, Viorica even had a set of her own back then. But there hadnāt been fun and adventure in that! Oh no, never. Whatās exciting about a stuffy, uniform build when you can create something of your own?
Small drawings make the faces, different handwriting filling out each piece of information, and the backs call a signature, just a small symbol that ended up their unofficial insignia. These little memories had been tucked awayā¦. not long after Rod had been cursed⦠Maybe, maybe Rod could use something nice like this, to remember the simpler days, and be happy, not just drawn up and tangled within the work of being a prince.
But always her little brother.
āIt took us days to make these⦠Iām glad we still have them. Remember? We wanted to split the work evenly, but in the end you just ended up doing all the backs.ā
Thatās right; thatās why the backs look so much more uniform, aside from a few here in there. It had been delicate work, the sort work that had clearly been a mark of time. Some of the cards, though survive they have, see damage upon their corners, worn and weathered. They had used them outdoors, so thatās natural, right? But thereās something⦠something specific about the ways these cards are battered, like tiny water droplets teared through only certain ones. And these onesā¦
No, no, they arenāt just the ones she made, are they? Couldnāt beā¦
Em pushes these thoughts away; her curiosity will have to wait for another day, because that question is too much to ask to Rod, especially when this⦠when this is supposed to be a grab at good times, the ones before fateās strings matted and pulled, threading their paths further and further away. Emelaigne has gotten⦠okay at grinning and bearing it, the sense of not belonging here that weighs upon her, because this is what the cards she was dealt decided to give her.
She worries for Rod, hoping heāll relax, heāll breathe, and heāll finally be okay with not hiding so much. He can talk if he needs to; Sebbyās given way to some things, but⦠but⦠Why is it that their hearts try to shut them off?
āYou know, itād be great if we could find another partner to play with, here⦠Sebby, you do wonderful, of course, of course, but yet another friendā¦ā Her voice trails off. This princess truly wears her heart on her sleeve, doesnāt she? Genuine, gentle, kind, and concerned for others.
But, instead of letting it bog her down, she laughs, lightly, before quickly shuffling the deck and holding it out, āNow, pick a card! Any card will do!ā
Character Tropes Quiz
The Tragic Hero
A tragic hero is a literary character who makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his/her own destruction. You give too much and don't get very much back, usually because you do things out of the goodness of your heart. You always seem to have good intentions and you often carry the burden of others on your shoulders. You have a very high sense of empathy and you tend to be very secretive about yourself. You have such a big heart and others value your friendship and see you as one of a kind. You're special to those who are close to you and they care about you dearly.

{ ā } - Ā He swirls the water in his glass. Normally, Rod was never at The Marchen for longer than he needed to be. In and out, only coming when Parfait called for his presence, he had lessons to attend, to teach, the boyās schedule didnāt have time to be laying about.
{ ā } - But a break never hurt anyone once in a while.
{ ā } - So there he sat, in The Marchen, separate from the friendly atmosphere that filled with chatter. Just he, himself, and Sebastian, as thoughts passed through his head, about his curse, his family, the past, his remaining days, Vioricaās wedding.. and how nice it would be if, by chance, he had a friend he could talk to. A friend that could listen to his thoughts, so that not so much would be weighted on his shoulders, but... itās so much easier to suffer in silence than voice it out isnāt it? Ah, what a conundrum.
{ ā } - The rattling of the seat, snaps him from his thoughts, as he looks over, as if his wish had been timely granted. āKarma,ā With the topic of loneliness being brought into the question, he quickly shakes his head.Ā āNo, of course Iām not lonely.ā Not that he had very many people he could call friendsĀ āMy family is enough.ā Not that he had much time to talk to them.
{ ā } - āYouāre welcome to take a seat, but rest assured, Iām not lonely.ā His āvoiceā suddenly shifts for a much higher pitched tone while Rod himself takes a sip from his glass.Ā
{ ā } - āJust mere moments before youāve arrived, Rod was hoping for some company. Poor boy doesnāt get to have many friends, Iām afraid. Heās really quite happy youāve decided to sit with us.ā
{ ā } - ā-!!ā He places the glass on the table, hand darting up to pull at Sebastian.

Cards + Magic
{ ā } - Walking home, the evening was coming, and their tummies rumbling. Another fun day with Viorica had come to an end, and heās excited to return. His heart still pounding from seeing her smile so brightly, ah she really isā¦
{ ā } -Ā āRod..! Look at those flowers, theyāre so pretty! Letās go take a look..!ā
{ ā } - āEm?ā The young boy turns around, looking around his beloved big sister, whereād she gone? Walking around, back and fourth, to and fro, oh- where did she go?Ā By his side, she had been just mere moments before, and now her figure hidden from sight. The sun was setting, the street lights flicker on- but she was still absent. Rod raises his voice, this isnāt the time for her to be scurrying off āEm, this isnāt funny, itās getting late. Dinnerās going to get coldā¦āĀ
{ ā } - Clenching his fists, he makes a brisk turn of his heel, away from home, a quick decision that he wasnāt going to return without her hand in his. Left, right, left, right, Rod makes various turns, eyes scanning here, there, every where for the girl- but Em never reveals herself, and soon enough, heās ran his way into a part of town heās never been in. His breathing becomes unsteady, the sun has fallen beneath the horizon, the street lights are all that light a path but not a single building strikes him as familiar- his feet are glued to ground. His only wish was to find his big sister, he just wanted to bring her home, and but instead heās found himself nothing but a bigger mess⦠And he⦠he canāt help but..
{ ā } - It starts with a hic, and yet another, soon a tear, and many more- itās not long until poor Rod breaks out into muffled sobbing, crouching to his knees, rubbing at his eyes. āBig sisā¦ā are the only words he can manage, the rest of his thoughts blend together into incoherent cries. Until⦠until a hand gently lays itself on his head. One too large to be that of his sisterās, yet too small to be that of his motherās. Sniffling, he peers up, preparing himself to break into a sprint if the situation calls for it.Ā
{ ā } - But his gaze meets a smile. One of kindness, that strikes him with no ill intent. Thereās no malicious hints in the eyes that observe him. The beholder appears to be just a few years older than Rod is, and something in his gut tells him not to move. But the stranger persists, grinning as he pulls a deck of cards from his pockets.
{ ā } -āDo you want to see a magic trick?ā
{ ā } - Magic⦠trick? His eyes stare intently. With the stranger taking his looks as an unspoken yes, and he riffles the cards, bridging them next. Rodās eyes already begin to twinkle, shine, theyāre bright watching the actions alone. Passing them from one hand to the next, they break away in petal after petal, swirling about, in a track not quite random, practiced to its utmost beauty. The scene is pulled together by the warm light around them from the lamps at each corner. The whole thing is rather enchanting, and before the boy realizes, heās long stopped crying, his attention focused onto his performance. His hands have stopped shaking, and he reaches out to touch a petal, as it swiftly brushes past his fingers. His voice returns to him as the show comes to an end, and the stranger brings him to a bench to rest for a short while.
{ ā } - To the strangerās questions, Rod answers the reason why heās here, why he was crying, and that all he wanted to do was to find his sister after sheād left his sight. His hair is ruffled loosely once his story is finished.
{ ā } -Ā āAh, looking for your sister by yourself is brave. Youāre such a cool little guy.ā He chuckles, leaning back onto the bench.Ā āStill, being alone at night isnāt safe. Your family is probably worried sick, so letās go home, okay? Do you know your way from the town square?ā
{ ā } - Nodding his head, the two almost set out to find his home, but Rod grabs his hand, tugging it gently.Ā āW-waitā¦! I.. I want to learn how to do that too⦠The magic tricksā¦ā The expression he sees is shocked, but only for a second. The smile on the strangerās face never seems to fade fully. He pulls out the cards again.
{ ā } -āIāll teach you the first part. This is called riffling. Itās a way to shuffle the cards.ā
{ ā } - Rodās hands are not big enough to hold the deck entirely, but with the help of the stranger, he presses on the cards and they- scatter. And again, again, again, they scatter. Falling to the ground, making a mess, they scatter. He refuses to move until he can do it, just once, so again, again, he tries. The stranger patiently aiding him by picking up the cards each time. One more time⦠one more time⦠Itās getting so late, but one more time⦠He riffles the cards, his focus entirely on the position of his hands, and heā¦
{ ā } - Somehow, some way, he riffles the deck, without a single card falling out.Ā āA-ah! I did it, Mister, I did it..!ā The stranger claps his hand, smiling, laughing at the genuine excitement reflecting in his eyes. Giving the deck back, he takes his hand, and off they went to the town square, and slowly the surroundings became familiar to him again, and it doesnāt take them long until they two of them are back to the place he called home.Ā
{ ā } - Knocking on the door, his mother and sister poke their heads out, and quickly sweep the boy off into a hug.Ā āIām home, and look, I made a friend, he can do a really cool..ā He turns around, noticing that the stranger was gone. The door way framed no one but the family. Confusion in his features.
{ ā } -āMister?ā
{ ā } - Ā āRod? Who are you calling for?ā
{ ā } - Shaking his head, he brushes it off. Exhaustion was pulling at his strings. The young boy was tired, but he does regret not having the chance to express his gratitude. Will the stranger ever come back, he wonders? Will he see the petals falls, the cards flip from hand to hand, breaking away into more, gone in the blink of an eye as if heād never seen anything at all? Ah, he canāt tell, he wonāt know until the time comes, but he knows for sure that the imagery will fuel his dreams, dreams that Rod canāt wait to explore.
{ ā } - Once heās warmly tucked into bed, the candles blown out. He looks at the ceiling, and his mind, normally crammed with too many thoughts to sort through, carries only one thing as he drifts into a soft slumber.
{ ā } -āWhen Iām older, I want to be just like himā¦ā

@fairesourire
{ā} - Dance practice⦠Rod enjoys these sessions. Or rather, he would enjoy these sessions, if not for the clear exhaustion that rests on his sisterās face every time she misses a beat, and theyāre forced to restart. He hates seeing her overwork herself so hard for this.
{ā} - Tripping over that same step of the routine, Rod holds tightly to her arm so she wonāt fall. āAre you okay? Letās take a break, youāve been working hard.ā He pulls her up, following her to the side of room. Setting himself next to her, walls against their back. The air is silent for moments, as he stares at the tiles on the floor. Her soft whispers break the quiet atmosphere, and what she says⦠it turns his gaze from the patterns back to her.
{ā} - āRod, I⦠I miss our old life, sometimes. There are so many things to do, and so many things to remember. Iām grateful, but it's⦠hard.ā
{ā} - Ah⦠she must be putting it lightly, but she really doesnāt like their situation, does she? Even if her words say that, her eyes speak louder. All of this caused by his greedy trades, they lost the lifestyle they once had. Expectations fall in their shoulders, with mannerisms, postures, cutlery placement, history lessons, and dances. All of which seemed to have come naturally to him, but it wasnāt like that for his older sister. Not to mention that there were no breaks to simply relax, or play- they had places to be, lessons to be taught, meetings to be held. Even in their āfree timeā they were to be in the best shape. They couldnāt be just Em and Rod, they were to be the Princess, and the Prince.
{ā} - Needless to say, it was tiring.
{ā} - And unfortunately, itās his own fault that the one he cares for is feeling this way. Even when Rod was such a strong believer to value the happiness of those around himĀ first, at the time his mind was filled to its brim with selfishness. He wanted to pull her into a dance, and he thought that maybe⦠if he were to become a fairy tale Prince Charming, that could dream could become a reality. But⦠but in that thought process, he forgot to consider how Em would feel. Stripped away from their simple yet free lifestyle⦠all for something that would remain fruitless in the end. His curse⦠he can never forget the impact that itās had for everyone.
{ā} - He silently watches, waits. Taking in the look of his sisterās solemn, lonely smile as her knees are pulled to her chest. He reaches up, tossing her hair lightly. Itās too late to wish for things to go back to the way they were, so all he can do is comfort her as he can. Even if itās not enough⦠this sad, yearning voice thatās set into her words⦠and he may not be able to remedy whatās led them here⦠but he canāt just sit without a care.
{ā} - āI understand, but youāll be fine. Itās tough to deal with, but itāll be okay. Youāre strong, Em. No matter what happens, if you feel overwhelmed⦠you can always be yourself with me and⦠Viorica. Youāve always pulled through, and this will be no exception. I believe in you, always.ā Are his words reaching deaf ears? He canāt tell for certain⦠but he watches as the smile appears on her face. Perhaps itās forced⦠but he hears a soft chuckle.
{ā} - āEheh.. youāre right. Sorry for putting my worries onto you so suddenly, I know youāre rather stressed as well⦠You know, Iāll always be here for you!ā
{ā} - He can only mask his sadness with a forced smile. Iāll always be here for you too, Em. Thatās what he wants to say, but just how many times can he lie to his own sister? Two people, tied together by a powerful familial bond; they should look after each other, they should be honest⦠they should be happy⦠together. But with the weight of knowing that he doesnāt have all of the time in the world to see her smile- in fact, he only has a few days at most. He needs to do what he can to see her while heās here. If he lies, so long as itās for the good⦠heās willing to bear the ever growing guilt that settles on his mind.
{ā} - āThank you, Em. Iāll listen to you whenever you need me.ā Iām sorry, Em.. that I took away your happiness, that Iāll have to lie to you again⦠and that Iāll be leaving soon.
