it was something ophelia knew she could do - someone who would dote on her, provide her with the money to live the lavish lifestyle she wished in return for companionship and sex. all in all, it reminded ophelia much of her marriage and who knew, she might get along better with whoever a sugar daddy or man to escort than she did her husband.

though she wasn't looking for the others approval, it made ophelia feel better to hear that sofia thought she should for looking for what she wanted - be that a job, or a new opportunity. the blonde smiled and laughed when the other admitted she only knew scrubs, and that more wealthy women seemed to exist in opulence than men. that was probably true, however every seemingly wealthy woman ophelia got to know seemed to leave before she could unleash a plan of sorts.

"i'll just hang around high-end bars, even if i don't bag anyone for something long term they can still buy me drinks and pay for a nice evening," she replied, pushing a little hair behind her ear. "reckless spenders but, not on us,"

⌝ "True," the woman nodded to the side, leaning her head towards one shoulder. "Probably just happens to you anyway, right?" Sofia acknowledged, because while Sofia hanging out at a high end bar was likely to get approached by someone thinking they might offer her the right amount to go home with her Ophelia truly did emulate the sort of woman one hoped to find generally for a larger purpose. It was a different quality but good also.

⌝ This time Sofia fully shrugged. "I don't really mind, it's sort of fun so long as I'm not paying their rent and that sort of thing. I enjoy it with Roman, he makes it fun, pushing the bill towards me so they see," she smiled a little in thought of it. "Besides, he still buys me things, he did a whole date night for us recently. It was cute," though she was sure Ophelia couldn't match Roman to the term 'cute.'

⌝ "You might meet someone cute too, you know, more than just spending on you, maybe they'll be dope too? Not just buy you things but buy you the exact thing that makes you feel all warm inside?" she offered because that was good too, they were allowed to want that.

"Max," he began to clarify, "From da Grinch. Kinda looks like Seymour a bit." The resemblance was quite uncanny, eyes squinting behind his sunglasses at the mental picture of the stray dog she and Roman had taken in.

A labored grunt sounded from his throat as Maria Elena was settled against his lap, her little feet pressing against hip bones and lower abdomen, her hands against his chest, wriggling little fingers like inching caterpillars seeking out colored ink against skin and rubbing like she was trying to wipe the ink away, unsuccessfully. His own hands rested lightly on either side of her, supporting her wobbly position so she wouldn't sway too dangerously to one side or the other. Face to face, her expression bright and cheery, grin wide with little pearls of teeth growing in. It was impossible to look at her and not smile back, no matter how tired he was feeling, no matter how sick he felt, hers was a smile that was utterly contagious and he was so easily infected, leaning his head closer to press his lips to her rosy cheek to give her a very loud and affectionate kiss.

Then came the hat, plopped on his head, damp and dripping wet, "Ah, that's cold," shoulders rising up to his ears as the cool water dripped down the sides of his head and neck. Droplets fell onto Maria Elena's face and he wiped them away, her caterpillar fingers found their way to the chain lock necklace he always wore, she always ended up grabbing it, trying to pull the lock into her mouth. It was basically a game of tug of war now, careful not to pinch her fingers as he worked it away from her.

He felt for Sofia though and the stuck position she now found herself in, stuck in a life she thought would make her happy but wasn't. Lips parted to respond to her about her situation with Roman when she suddenly commented how badly he looked. "Aw, thanks. I feel fucked up, nice to know it shows," was his half hearted sarcastic response, already aware that he probably looked as bad as he was feeling. "Gimme da hat back so I can hide behind it, me an' my fucked up self don't wanna be perceived." He could reach it if he leaned forward but didn't feel like it so remained in place, his fingers poking the soft tummy of his daughter instead until she giggled. "I'm just tired, yanno," downplaying his own situation, not wanting to bring attention to it, not wanting to talk about it, to explain why he was so tired, why he was so much more worse off than other sirens. "Water is helping."

⌝ Sofia chuckled when he explained, a musical lilt to the laugh because he wasn't entirely off. Perhaps she'd be able to do that, though Nibbler would not have equally as fun an opportunity. "He'd suit it, maybe I just might have to," she agreed while he let out a laboured grunt with his daughter seated in his lap. It suited him, one wouldn't think so as the young woman touched a tattooed chest, but it did. Sofia wasn't sure she would be at a point where it suited her anytime soon. Not that she didn't enjoy playing with Marie Elena, but someone else's and your own were vastly different, the affection he gave his daughter with such readiness...Sofia found that hard to do with people she could understand and wasn't responsible for. A child? No.

⌝ Watching the way the young girl's fingers tugged at his chain Sofia tried to make sure she wasn't pulling too hard on the obviously exhausted male without prematurely intervening. "Well usually you're so chipper," she responded to his sarcasm with her own having the same tone, though her own was not actually sarcasm. Mars was sort of a chipper guy, even if that wouldn't be the specific word one might use.

⌝ "Good, hide from me," she agreed, plopping the hat once more on his head as he made Marie Elena giggle as she sat on him. "Kinda," she responded honestly because while she was tired she didn't believe she was tired the way that he was tired. "I've been living in the stuff," she confirmed. "That or chugging it. I'd say I'd never been so hydrated in my life if I didn't know I most definitely am not." There was a momentary pause though, her long nails flicking at the hat she had put on his head, some droplets of water flicking with the motion. "You know if something's going on you can tell me, "

she couldn't imagine nor understand anyones attraction to roman but, it wasn't her place to. sofia missed having him around, which was normal when you were so involved with someone. ophelia disliked his presence yet, wouldn't wish it gone to make anyone purposefully unhappy. roman's presence missing from the club seemed to be felt by a few who had been friends with him.

ophelia couldn't think of what to say in response, so simply nodded in acknowledgement. easier than saying something wrong and putting her foot in it.

"i'm sticking to the club for now," the blonde agreed. "i think i might move on in the summer, or after maybe. find something that pays a little more, or someone," ophelia wasn't opposed to the idea of a sugar daddy after all. all she needed was money, happiness was a secondary aspect after all.

⌝ "Ah," Sofia let out, little smirk on her face at the notion of a 'someone' rather than to a job. Wasn't the worst idea, Sofia had considered it when she was back in California but so many dudes were just fucking liars and it became clear the only person she could depend on was herself. Ophelia however had the personality knack for finding someone actually wealthy and doing the things someone needed to do for that lifestyle, where as Sofia would be at best a second mistress, not even classy enough for a main mistress.

⌝ "You should look for it," she nodded, if that was what Ophelia wanted anyway. "Wish I had a suggestion but I mostly know fucking scrubs. Feels like there's more wealthy women in this town than men though, so I wouldn't waste your time on boys. You'd think with fucking super powers they'd use the privilege they already have to push that fucking cash but I don't know a single dude who has more in his bank account than me. Reckless fucking spenders." Of course, Sofia was unaware of how wealthy Mars was but he wasn't on the market anyway.

Mars had been sporting a minor fever off and on for a few days, even now with her subtle attempt at checking his temperature, she would likely feel his skin warmer than it should be by a few degrees. "Dat'll be da best card," he said back to her, oblivious of her attempt to determine his temperature and only just letting her touch back his hair with her cool fingers as his eyes closed momentarily from the soothing contact. "Gonna dress 'em up?" He asked, eyes still closed, lids feeling warm behind the dark shade of the sunglasses he wore, "Lil hats 'er sweaters. Antlers." Picturing Seymour with a single antler on his head like the dog from the Grinch whose name he couldn't remember. Then it hit him and he said the dog's name suddenly, "Max," but without any other context of where his thoughts had gone it probably sounded a bit out of place.

He opened his eyes then, hearing little grunts from his daughter, looking over in time to see her clumsy fingers grasping the edge of the hat and tugging it awkwardly off her head, holding it up as high as she could while it trailed down, then he snorted out a chuckle when Sofia tried to hold the hat over her head in a makeshift sunshade, "Yer gonna get tired holdin' dat up. Bring her here," he gestured with his hand as he sat up more fully and then positioned himself so his back would be facing the sun and casting a shadow on anything in front of him, the intention being to have Maria Elena rest on tops of his knees and thighs which he had bent so they stuck out of the water and she could stand with her feet submerged but on his hips. "Gimme da jelly baby," waiting for Sofia to pass the toddler over or keep her for herself.

"How old is the kid?" Mars asked, keeping his eyes on Sofia from behind his sunglasses. He could understand the shock that came from suddenly being told that there was going to be an unexpected kid in your life, having gone through that very same shock himself, but to have that kid be grown up, to have missed some years of getting to know them beyond their formative years, being introduced as strangers with the expectation of familial bonding must be a transition. It must be difficult for Roman and equally if not more for Sofia. "Are you okay?" He asked her then.

⌝ "Well, of course, what sort of mother would I be if I didn't force my kids into costumes?" she agreed of the suggestion, still feeling his head and the heat on it. He wasn't dangerously warm but enough that Sofia was a little concerned, perhaps she should add more cold water, poor it over him entirely as he laid there. It was challenging to worry about why he was worse than her, why was he experiencing things in this way. "Max?" she asked, definitely unaware of the context.

⌝ When his eyes opened, the little girls grunts and giggles drawing his attention Sofia was unsure about handing the child to him. Mars was a great dad, she wasn't worried that he'd do anything bad, more worried Marie Elena would be the one to exhaust him. Kids were so excitable, with so much energy. Still Sofia helped move the young girl in the way he had requested, getting the hat she held for the girl wet in the cold water of the blow up bath before placing it on Mars head. That might cool him.

⌝ "I don't know exactly, about twelve I think Roman said," she offered, trying to recall if Roman had said twelve as an exact or as a generalisation. "Uh...I don't know, it's all a lot. I was thinking about things, considering if I wanted to stick around and then Micah left town and it's not like an option was ripped away or anything but Roman was so good about it and I like having someone treating me good, it's different," she explained a little. "I told him I'm getting exhausted by it all though and can't take much more of shit just being wild. I stayed with him because I thought things would be easy, that there weren't any expectations. If I wanted a wild life I could have gone with Micah and it would have been a fun sort of wild but I just wanted something easy. Shit doesn't feel easy." Life didn't always go the way you wanted it to but, as she had told Roman in her distress of Micah leaving, why did she feel like she was the one suffering for his misdeeds?

⌝ "Not to like, avoid talking about shit, but...you seem pretty fucked up," Sofia asserted, grabbing the hat from his head and dropping it back into the water.

Gabriel couldn't help but take note of how Sofia felt different to him but he didn't want to be rude and say anything about it in case something serious happened whole he was gone. Even if her energy was different, the siren was still so mesmerizing to the human. The whole time he was away he thought about how much he missed everyone back home but it only hit him now how much he had missed Sofia. Her words stung a little bit, did Larvae not want to hang out with him? Was he really keeping his dog in a one sided relationship? "Oh.. do you think he really wanted a Gabecation of his own? Yeah you're probably right, he's always preferred my sister over myself."

He followed alongside her, a small embarrassed laugh escaping him as he mentally kicked himself for blurting out his thoughts earlier. "I mean, yeah, I kinda did. I thought about everyone, it was pretty lonely out there. Funny thing, I actually lost my phone at one point and it turns out it was under the seat in my car! I went 26 days without my phone but I still had my switch with me so I didn't get bored."

Dark eyes watched the woman closely as they walked, he felt bad because he did feel pretty amazing since coming back, but he hadn't spoken to anyone since returning so he wasn't sure what she was talking about, "Wait, what happened on Founders Day?"

⌝ Gabe explained how he'd been without his phone but had been able to play on his switch and Sofia nodded. However when he asked what happened on Founder's Day she frowned, presuming that he simply did not know the date of Founder's Day because while it had been literally all over the news it had been both occurrence within the town that had been seen, the green mist having coated the town, but also something that had physically affected everyone the moment they were touched by it.

⌝ "The 17th?" she reminded him of the Founder's Day date itself. "I'm too exhausted to do this bit with you, Gabe, it's like actually not funny." With an exhale she brought the bottle to her lips once again, forgetting it was empty and that was half of the reason she was walking with him in search of his dog. "Maybe you feel fine and great because you're strong and fast now but the rest of us feel like crap, or worse."

Theo planned to go visit his dad, but he didn't think to call before he did. He thought he would just go and his dad would probably be at home. If he wasn't he could just go back to his own, it wasn't a big deal.

He wasn't expecting the door to open on Sofia instead, his dad's girlfriend. He thought he liked her, she was a nice person and always seemed to be in a good mood. As if everything was amusing to her. He really liked that energy, which is what pushed him into trying to spend more time together when they would be at the same event, he just didn’t know if she would want to spend some time with him randomly. It could be weird for her to suddenly be stuck with a bunch of grown kids. It was a pretty unique situation, but maybe not in this town. "I was hoping my dad would be here...I guess since he isn't I should let you go back to what you were doing…It was nice to see you!" He said with a little smile on his face.

⌝ It was a good thing she was dressed. Sometimes at the trailer she wasn't in more than one of Roman's shirts but admittedly she wasn't that dressed. She'd opened the door to the trailer in her swimwear and one of Roman's flannels, not actually expecting to see someone, water from the hose already starting to fill the above ground pool she'd had to buy cause of this whole mess, blue cheap plastic circle held up by the white plastic tubing going to hopefully help her get a little more hydrated.

⌝ Maybe it was a bit blind on Sofia's part but she actually thought she and Theo got on pretty well, certainly better than she did with the others. Matty was fine enough when they were both high but they had differences of opinion, and while Sofia knew Layne was trying she could tell it was still hard for the woman to see Roman with someone so different to their mother. Theo though seemed simply happy to have the chance to get to know his dad, to know his Dad was trying, and didn't seem to hold anything against her.

⌝ "No, you can wait for him if you want," she insisted as she slipped past him, throwing a large beach down over the edge of the fence for the porch leading up to the trailer, taking the steps down towards the pool simply sat up in the middle of the forest in front of the trailer itself. "He should be home from work soon, he's grabbing food, text him to grab some for you too, we can blow up one of those like lounges and sit it in the pool so you don't get your cast wet. I still have to sign it," she told him as she adjusting the hose, only having filled the pool half way.

A softly exhaled laugh of amusement came from his throat, “Yeh, I guess they are,” he forgot that he was technically already dead. It was kind of jarring to think about so he often didn’t linger on the logistics of it. He’d already mourned the loss of his humanity a long time ago but like an old wound that never quite healed, when brought up again it brought along the memories and realization for the uncertain future. “That’s disgusting,” the thought alone made his own dick itch uncomfortably and he absently tugged at the front of his black swimming shorts, bending one leg now, knee coming out of the water, droplets trickling down the angles of his leg, dodging body hair that was barely visible because it grew blond and thin, an obvious indication that his natural hair color was not the deep black that he had on his head, not that he’d ever admit it. 

“You’ve got a fucked step-family, Step-Mommy,” the corner of his lips turned up in a weak slanted smirk, “Make sure ya send me a Christmas card photo collage with all da new additions, maggots decoratin’ da edges instead of –,” he paused, forgetting the word, fatigue making his brain work slower than he was used to so all his natural wit felt like it was failing him.

He ended up just dismissing it, “Yanno," too tired to try and remember the word he was thinking of. He shifted again with a sigh, brought his elbows down to the bottom of the pool and propped himself up, lifting his head up from his reclined position, eyes open behind the shade of his sunglasses to look at Sofia, “Didja meet dis new kid yet?” His hand raked over his black hair, slicked back from the damp of the water, tousling it a bit so it wasn't clinging, droplets of water collecting and dripping from the ends of the longer strands of his hair.

⌝ Sofia laughed but it didn't linger, his notion things were disgusting made him move and when he moved it was clear just how hard things were for him. Maybe trying to cheer him up had not been the way to go. Getting him up the stairs had already taken a lot out of him clearly, and now talking seemed to be making matters worse. Sofia really wasn't good with this type of thing because it combined a litany of things she was only now just learning to be better about handling.

⌝ "Pretty fucked up," she agreed, drawing her legs into the water once more and adjusting herself so she was closer to Mars, false nails reaching out to push back some of his hair in it's mixed shades, trying to hide that she was checking his temperature with the pads of her finger prints. "I'll send you one and it'll be just me, Seymour, and Nibbler, no one else will agree to pose," she joked, unsure exactly where Roman was with all of his kids.

⌝ Soft gave a gentle shake of her head, still touching his hair as she did, observing his daughter being as disinclined to the hat as Mars had likely suspected she'd be. "Nope, from what I can tell he's barely getting the kid himself so I'm a whole secondary issue that will come once he's sorted things out which I don't mind. If shit goes sideways I won't have got attached. Jelly Legs will be the only tiny one I love," Sofia insisted, taking the hat with her free hand and trying to hold it above the child's head so she still wasn't being directly hit by the sun. "Auntie Sofia only love you? Yes?"

“Usually do when it comes to you,” he smirked, his tongue dipping out just a little to wet his upper lip.  The touch of her nails at the back of his scalp sent shivers down his spine as his dark eyes stared into hers.  “Awww, I am starting to think you might love me, mi puta loca.”  And just moments later, she confirmed it with those three beautiful words.

Roman shook his head, “nah, I am sure I am long forgotten.”  It has been nearly six months since Boss Lady fired him and banned him from the club.  “You just take some up there for everyone and tell them I say hi.”  Although it would be nice to catch up and see familiar faces, Roman was trying to move past that time in his life and he knew if he went up, he would be upset he wasn’t there anymore.  

“Glad you are feeling good,” he told her as he headed over towards the table with their food to enjoy.  “Wow, well you look wonderful and your skin looks amazing.”  It really was not something Roman noticed, he often didn’t notice these little things like nails, hair and skin.  But, he wanted to compliment her and let her know he was listening about her day.  “Lyn,” he thought for a moment then nodded.  “Oh yeah, I remember Lyn.”  The man left it there, if it was the Lyn he was thinking about the two had a few hookups, but nothing beyond sex.  “What?  A job at the country club?”  There was some confusion in his tone.  “Is that something you want to do?”  It surprised him to hear it was something she was considering.  The country club did not seem like their kind ideal job, but he of course was not going to say anything negative if it meant he got to spend more time with his love.  “Um, if it is something you think you might like I will support you.  I just don’t want you to feel obligated because right now our job schedules are conflicting.”  He commented as he brought a spoonful of gumbo up to his lips.

⌝ Tender smile on glossed lips Sofia observed him, wondering as he spoke if he understood just how much she loved him. It was hard to fathom herself in moments, choices she had made that she didn't think she ever would. Even just living with him was something she never foresaw for herself, living with someone who was her partner, mind lingering on these thoughts as her fingers did so against the back of his neck.

⌝ Sofia hated that he felt as though he was forgotten and unwanted, the woman sure if she told Yashica that he was sober that Yashica would be happy to see him, to have him come by. Not that Sofia had been asked directly about him by her boss but the other dancers had and so she knew Yash would obviously want to as well. "I'll take it and tell them."

⌝ Few would have messed with Sofia a little. More than once. Fortunately the woman didn't mention it in their conversation which allowed Sofia to assume once. "I want to see you more," but as Sofia said it she wondered if Roman wanted that. His shock about it hit her firmly in the chest as an indication perhaps he did not. Even as Roman went on to say he would support her his hesitation in resolving their conflicting schedules surprised her. "If you want to be supportive say you're excited," she asserted, not nudging him because he had hot gumbo in a spoon in front of him but staring firmly at him. "You planned a whole romantic evening, just say you want to see me more too, that you know I'll make crazy good tips of dumb rich old men like I do at the club. Unless there's some reason you like going to bed without me?" Sofia questioned, ready to see if she could find a wolf willing to sniff the man's sheets and tell her if there was another woman on them - unaware there would be another scent they'd find.

"god forbid we want normal, seasonal weather," she joked in response to it, listening to sofia talk about how the girl wouldn't last long if she kept using and attempting to steal the cosmetic products of others at the club. ophelia knew she'd personally go apeshit if she touched some of her more expensive stuff like the gucci blush or la mer foundation. "i just hope they kick her ass in a place we can watch," the blonde replied at the possibility of it.

it was surprising to hear that sofia was thinking of going part time and getting a day job. there was nobody else in the club that was as confident as her, in ophelia's eyes, walking around like she owned the place with the sex appeal to command it. "really?" the other woman questioned her, that surprise clear in her voice and eyes. "i think if it's what you want, go for it. you can only come back to the club if it doesn't work out," ophelia realised it felt good to hear sofia admit that she was considering part-time, especially since she was considering getting a new job to.

⌝ Sof nodded at the surprise on Ophelia's face and in her tone. It made sense, not from the specific standpoint of her confident but Sofia did walk around like she owned the place because the club felt like a second home, she liked being there, she liked working there, but she could do something she liked a little less if it meant seeing someone she loved a little more. "I miss Roman," for as much as Ophelia probably couldn't fathom anyone missing him, Sofia did.

⌝ "That is true," Sofia agreed of Ophelia's assertion she could simply up her hours again if she didn't end up liking the other place. "You looking elsewhere or sticking to the club for now?" Sofia asked, aware Ophelia hadn't exactly started in the best place dancing wise, relying more on her looks, but she had been working with Mars and she had definitely come a long way.

The energy coming from the siren was nothing like what Gabriel was used to feeling around her, instead of a rich maroon she felt like a greyish purple. Or at least that's how he processed it in his head. Once he realised who they were speaking to, his voice decided that right now was the perfect time to crack, "Sofia!" he cleared his throat and tried again, "Sofia, fuck, sorry I - yeah, as soon as I opened my car door he went sprinting towards town. He must have some really important business to conduct but it's been almost an hour now I'm getting worried."

He couldn't fight back the eager grin as he spoke without thinking again, "I thought about you a lot when I was away y'know." As soon as he finished what he was saying he felt that he was being too obvious. "I mean - like - like a totally normal amount! Every night but I also thought about Tony every night too so... what's going on with you?"

⌝ Sofia barely noticed the crack as she took another sip of her water while he explained that he'd opened the door and his dog had run off almost immediately. "If you kept him holed up for so long just the two of you he probably went looking for some different company," she asserted, water lingering on her lips. It wasn't like Sofia looked bad, per say, she still had her usual winged liner and her hair still had it's usual beautiful cool toned brown, but she was very obviously a little exhausted. "I'll help you look for him."

⌝ Turning she gave Gabe a gentle nudge with her side and started to head in the direction of what smelled like burgers, surely that was where a dog would have run off to. "A totally normal amount?" she asked him, raising a brow as she glanced back at her smiling green haired friend, so much vibrancy to it. "You think about Tony and I every night? You could just text me, I'm usually up, unless you can't think about me and talk to me?"

⌝ Steps slow she sipped more water, bottle almost empty, she'd have to refill it at the burger place even if he dog wasn't there. "All that shit that happened on Founder's Day has me drying out so fast, I'm like chugging water constantly. Bet you feel like a million bucks, super strong, super fast, all that good stuff."

Compared to his usual cave dwelling anxious goblin vibe, Gabriel’s skin was glowing with his new tan, his roots were freshly dyed and the green hair sprouting from his head looked more natural than ever. The only thing about him that hadn’t changed was the worried look he wore on his face. He was wandering around, obviously looking for something, his eyes scanning his surroundings with eyes squinting against the midday sun.

After what felt like forever, Gabriel spotted someone turning the corner and instantly locked eyes with them. His expression changed to a playful one as he smiled brightly, “Heyyy -” his voice was sing songy but as he cut himself off, his ears turned pink from embarrassment at the overly happy greeting, “Fuck, sorry, I just spent 2 months with my dog so I kinda forgot how to speak to people for a moment - hey!” With an almost pitiful attempt at a normal smile Gabriel pulled out his phone, holding it up in the eyesight of the person in front of him, “Have you seen this dog by any chance? He went running off around that way,” he waved around the area behind the person, cringing even further at himself.

⌝ It was kind of weird to see how well the human was doing, he was probably loving all of this. Getting the powers that he had once been denied, sure, Gabe wasn't a witch but he was strong now, he could heal, run fast, and maybe he did even have a little more oomph to his power. Sofia, on the other hand, with all that had happened, was constantly feeling dehydrated so was chugging water as she walked towards her car, potting came as he came around the corner.

⌝ "You don't need to show me what your dog looks like, Gabe," Sofia told him before taking another sip from the bending straw of her ridiculously sized water bottle. "I did not see him, sorry," she offered, pretty focused on her own stuff right now. "How did you lose him?"

Mars reclined back in the cool waters, limbs much too long for the blow up pool, it was large enough to fit him but only just and his toes reached the plastic wall on the other side with his legs fully extended, elbows propped up beneath him from behind and head laid back, resting gently against the plastic edge, not enough to weight it down so the water could spill out but just enough so the heavy weight was somewhat relieved from his neck. Sunglasses covered his eyes and protected them from the sun but he was still squinting behind their dark shade as he turned his head to glance at Sofia as she tended to his daughter, adjusting her large brimmed hat that she would likely soon lose all patience for and throw it like she did with most head accessories but for the moment she was distracted by the show on his phone. 

He was trying to act like nothing was wrong but try was the indication that something was wrong and when he smiled at her, it probably looked as forced as it felt, a hollow action that was just a lifting of the edges of his lips, no genuine emotion behind it and just a mechanical use of facial muscles to convey a practiced expression that soon fell as quickly as it had been made. “What about his first tattoo?” Mars asked, his voice lower than usual, a bit gravelly from disuse, lacking the same vivacity that it used to have. He was exhausted. Getting up to the rooftop to relax in the pool with Sofia had taken a lot out of him and his nostrils flared from trying to temper his breathing so he didn’t look like he was struggling when he was, chest rising and falling from his heavy breath, he was just lucky that she didn’t have enhanced hearing so she couldn’t hear the way his heart was hammering against his ribcage. “Is Matty a corpse fucker?” He asked, now closing his eyes behind his sunglasses so he wasn’t squinting.

⌝ Sofia could hear it, that weakness in his voice that sounded like the usual depth was being ground out of it with rocks. It was like listening to nails on a chalk board because it hurt to hear, and Sofia was so determined to pretend as though she could not. Why did it seem like some people had been hit so hard while others merely felt mortal? It didn't make sense. Her and Roman were weaker, sure, but ultimately okay. "Oh, definitely his first tattoo, make sure it's a real stupid one too. One of those 'MOM' hearts but instead of 'MOM' it'll say 'STEP MOM' so it's even more embarrassing," she joked, looking to Mars and then back to his little girl.

⌝ "I mean aren't Ry and Roman sort of corpse fuckers?" she joked, because while maybe Mars saw it differently it wasn't as though they were alive. Maybe they seemed more alive than the vampires did because their bodies pretended better but the truth was they weren't. "Matty just fucks a lot of corpses from what I hear, more power to him but who knows what he might catch. Maggots on his dick maybe?" she tried to make him laugh, though perhaps that was unwise.
