Some definitions:
Shahid (plural shouhada): it’s supposed to mean martyr in a religious sense BUT in Algeria we use it for freedom fighters who were killed as well as those who fought and died during the war because they were sick or wounded regardless of their religion. Frantz Fanon for example is considered to be a Shahid and as such is buried in the Shouhada square of the cemetery.
Moudjahid (plural moudjahidine): again it’s supposed to be a religious term to designate people who fight to protect Islam but in Algeria we use it for all freedom fighters who fought for the independence. Maurice Audin was not Muslim but he is considered to be a Moudjahid.
Allah yarham *…*: It means “May God have mercy on *…*. It’s the proper thing to say when talking about a Muslim who died. I will use it mostly when talking about the Shouhada here but that’s something you’re supposed to say for all Muslims who died.
Tahiya Al djazair (horra): Long live to (a free) Algeria. The horra is optional.
Pied noir: A European settler in Algeria and ONLY in Algeria

Very important question: is that only in France where the anti piracy crowd is very white very privileged very “get sent books for free by publishers all the time” and the pro piracy crowd is very PoC (mostly Arab but Black as well) very pushed aside by publishers never getting books for free and very pro Palestine as well?
Cause in France it’s so obvious that it’s a class AND race issue. Things I dislike about Zidane: The fact that he is going to train the French National Team after what they did to the Arabs especially the Algerians of the team (but hopefully he will change that), the fact that during the World Cup his son seemed to take his Kabyle roots at heart and looked like he massaged his hands with olive oil.
P.S: The purpose of this post was 100% about Zidane marrying a woman who comes from the same economic background as he did (low income immigrants) and is still married to her and doesn’t treat her like an enemy who is after his money like most footballers do. Also the fact that he is such a genius that he is the only Algerian that ever existed on this planet who is loved by the French in general and they all forgave him for the headbutt even if it’s what costed the World Cup to France in 2006. Hey all! Normally when I post for Mona's community aid initiative, I post about the communities of refugees she is helping. But today I went to Instagram to update you all and saw that she hasn't posted since April, and we hadn't spoken since then either. She hadn't messaged me updates like she normally does. I was very afraid. It turned out she had broken her phone during a displacement, and she hasn't been able to replace it due to the high costs. Mobile phones are a scarce and expensive resource in Ghazzah but they are a lifeline for the families there. And for Mona it is not just a lifeline for her family but also for the refugee community she has dedicated the last few years of her life serving. She cannot connect with her usual network of volunteers or access funds without her phone (she had to contact me through her mother's phone). Despite helping displaced refugees, her and her family are also displaced refugees also living out of a tent, and she cannot currently afford a replacement. The French during colonialism when it was politically correct to do what they were doing: Our empire is built on strength only, we don’t and cannot have any other method against the Arabs. Morocco is aligned with France politically. They normalized, they train with the IOF, the Moroccan colonization of Western Sahara allows France to have stuff like tomatoes for cheap, they also welcome French racists in their country. There’s been expropriation of Moroccans to build hotels and neighborhoods for tourists and French people. If your doctor makes multiple documents confirming that you suffer from alopecia because of stress and the medicine you have to take for your epilepsy and that wearing a bonnet or something is recommended for your mental health as you’re not ready to go out bald in high school as a teenage girl, instead of admitting they are wrong the school will accuse the doctor of lying and report him to the Ordre des Médecins (equivalent of the General Medical council). Your doctor will find himself asking you for a document stating that you are not Muslim in order to defend himself and prove that no he wasn’t colluding with you so you could wear a substitute for hijab.

They will accuse you of going against secularism and when you’ll argue that they are discriminating you by assuming you’re Muslim for a surgical cap on your head they will change their angle and claim that you should wear nothing on your hair because you wear the same surgical cap in multiple bedroom which is unhygienic apparently (which is a bullshit argument cause you wear the same scrub/uniform in different bedrooms as well). The teenage girl’s story is also not just about racism and Islamophobia it’s also about ableism as the girl is convinced that the real reason the school is trying to push her out is because she had an epilepsy crisis in class and nobody knew what to do and the school nurse was absent. It could have ended badly had her best friend not known what to do to help. Apparently it was bad enough to cancel class for the rest of the day and the teacher was shocked to the point of ending on sick leave.
oh and don't forget that many parts of France mandate by law how much skin women must show in swimsuits, which they claim is about not getting street dirt in public pools but which is disproportionately enforced on Muslim or even just Middle Eastern/North African women
(and of course is also some forced nudity misogynistic bullshit in general, to boot)
The rule for loose shorts for men has been a thing for decades and it’s because some men wear them outside as well and because men would use actual shorts as swimsuits.
As for the rules not being about banning Muslim women from swimming I don’t know your age but I’m old enough to remember when going to a public swimming pool with a hijab on to keep an eye on your kids and without getting in the water was okay. I’m old enough to remember when wearing a short and T-shirt over your swimsuit at the border of the water when you weren’t swimming was perfectly okay as well. I remember when swimsuits with skirts or shorts attached to them were allowed.
All the extra rules you mentioned started being put in place AFTER the “burkini” ban when they realized that the majority of Muslim women who were going in public swimming pools were not hijabi but still liked to be more modest and wear swimming skirts or shorts and stuff like that.
Y’all don’t realize the actual level of France’s Islamophobia and anti Algerian racism and how it color everyday laws and rules that seems to have nothing to do with Muslims and/or Algerian.
I know a woman who almost divorced because of Islamophobia in France. She wears the hijab but was born and raised in Algeria. When she got married she came in France after 4 years she told her husband that she loved him but that she couldn’t take it anymore and that she was moving back to Algeria and he could either follow her or divorce her. Husband was smart and followed her. They’ve been living in Algeria for 3 years and they are very happy.
This is why I’m against Muslim men in France marrying hijabi from back home (or from any other Muslim country). You don’t take people’s daughter who grew up in a country where she was never looked down upon for her hijab, where her hijab never closed doors for her in terms of education, entertainment, hobbies and job opportunities and bring her to France of all countries. But that’s an other subject.
France be keeping hijabi women from schools, from sports, from work and from public spaces all the time… and there’s always that one white bitch who goes “but women in Afghanistan” as if excluding hijabi women from public life in France was helping women who are excluded from public life in Afghanistan.
That being said I’ll always remember about 10 years ago when the whole issue around modest swimsuits started in France. There’s that picture of a woman who was wearing a modest swimsuit (light blue if I remember correctly) and she was just laying on the beach like everyone else and then the cops surrounded her and made her undress in the middle of the beach. The rule for loose shorts for men has been a thing for decades and it’s because some men wear them outside as well and because men would use actual shorts as swimsuits.
As for the rules not being about banning Muslim women from swimming I don’t know your age but I’m old enough to remember when going to a public swimming pool with a hijab on to keep an eye on your kids and without getting in the water was okay. I’m old enough to remember when wearing a short and T-shirt over your swimsuit at the border of the water when you weren’t swimming was perfectly okay as well. I remember when swimsuits with skirts or shorts attached to them were allowed.
All the extra rules you mentioned started being put in place AFTER the “burkini” ban when they realized that the majority of Muslim women who were going in public swimming pools were not hijabi but still liked to be more modest and wear swimming skirts or shorts and stuff like that.
Y’all don’t realize the actual level of France’s Islamophobia and anti Algerian racism and how it color everyday laws and rules that seems to have nothing to do with Muslims and/or Algerian.
I know a woman who almost divorced because of Islamophobia in France. She wears the hijab but was born and raised in Algeria. When she got married she came in France after 4 years she told her husband that she loved him but that she couldn’t take it anymore and that she was moving back to Algeria and he could either follow her or divorce her. Husband was smart and followed her. They’ve been living in Algeria for 3 years and they are very happy.
This is why I’m against Muslim men in France marrying hijabi from back home (or from any other Muslim country). You don’t take people’s daughter who grew up in a country where she was never looked down upon for her hijab, where her hijab never closed doors for her in terms of education, entertainment, hobbies and job opportunities and bring her to France of all countries. But that’s an other subject.
