🚄 I was going home from another city by train. 👨🏭 The conductor arrived and he asked me for my ticket. I showed it to him quietly. He looked at me and he said: ‘This ticket is not validated.’ 👀 I looked at him doubtfully. It was because I wasn’t sure I understood what he said. I was certain I bought my ticket, so what could go wrong? At that time I didn’t speak Italian well and actually this fact saved me :D I said: ‘Non capisco.’ (I don’t understand). 👉 He showed me the backside of the ticket where there is written in English too that the tickets must be validated. Oops… I tried to explain to him that I didn’t know that and I had no idea how to validate the ticket. I said sorry. He understood me somehow and he also said something, but I didn’t understand. The story finished with a happy ending. He went away and I think he added that it mustn’t be repeated. See? Today I’ll tell you the very origins of our Italian traveler course. How was it born? But before I tell you, let me give you some info about us. I’m Sissi. I’m a teacher. I have always loved teaching and creating learning materials for my students. I created some textbooks, workbooks, audios, etc. I’m also a learner. I have been studying foreign languages since I’ve known myself. So, I know the difficulties that students have to overcome. Luca is an Italian teacher and web marketer. He has been teaching Italian for 5 years. He loves his country, his language and teaching. Ok, now that you know our background, I can reveal THE BIG SECRET. Kidding! :D There is no big secret. But there is a good idea. One evening, we were having a beer and talking with our friend who is an English teacher. He took some Turkish lessons from me some years ago. His motivation was to cope well in Turkey on his holiday. He didn’t want to learn the whole language from zero, but he wanted only the ‘most important and useful parts’ of the language for his trip. Actually, if I think, I remember that I also had this request when I came to Italy as a tourist. But I didn’t learn the basis of Italian, because I didn’t find good materials for my trip. I haven’t seen an Italian family where the mamma was not the boss :D Sometimes Italian men try to disagree with the mamma, but it’s just a waste of effort. The mamma wins always. The mamma decides everything regarding the house and the children. And also the husband. :D I consider myself as an Italian mamma (even if I’m not originally Italian), because I completely agree with this set up. :D (I hope, Luca won’t see this post :D). Luca is kind of used to making grammar mistakes in English  But he reacts well when I correct him. Actually, I correct him only when it’s important. It was important for a commercial video, don’t you think?  When I met him for the first time, we made many mistakes while speaking, but we understood each other well. The biggest source of my mistakes was my lack of self-confidence. He was the opposite of me. Even when he made mistakes, he didn’t care, because he knew that the most important thing was to convey the message. In addition, he was more confident (he is Italian). Anyway, I learned a lot from him. I was too naïve when I went to Loreto for two months. Why? Because I told to my students that I would do my lessons after work as I was sure I would find free Wi-Fi in some coffee-shops. By the way, to complete the picture and not miss any info, I went there to work as a language teacher for the Italian Airforce. It was an intensive language course and I went there twice. I liked Loreto very much, but don’t search for Wi-Fi there! I wanted to continue my lessons on Skype with my students and that’s why I needed internet. I asked people there and they said: ‘Yes, you can find many coffee-shops with free Wi-Fi in the center.’ Nooo. They believe they have connection, but it’s not true. You cannot even connect with your phone or PC because even if they have, the connection is so weak that you cannot use it. OK, Loreto is a small town, but it happened to me in even bigger places. It’s not true anymore, unfortunately. Italians have one or two children, if they have any at all. Why is this? There are many reasons why Italians don’t have children anymore. The most important reason is economic. You know, the number of working Italians are decreasing. No job, no career. Many young Italians leave their country because they don’t find a job for themselves. Even if they find a job, they are not satisfied with it because until at least the 30’s, they don’t get good positions. When they can start growing, they are already 40. You understand that at that age, they will have maximum one kid, right? This is one reason. Another reason is that there is a tendency in Europe (as I can see), that people like to live as singles for long. It implies, they find their partner late and even when they find, they are used to living only for themselves and they don’t want to give up their comfortable lifestyle for a baby. Prepositions, darling! Ehh, Luca and English prepositions? They don’t have a good relationship :D As you can see, we had to record the same sentences again and again, due to Luca’s grammar mistakes. By the way, since we are talking about grammar mistakes, I must tell you that in our opinion, communication is more important than correct grammar. When you reach a certain level, you would pay attention to the grammar too, for sure, but when you are a beginner or intermediate level, it’s more important to be able to communicate. Why? Because if you can express yourself in a way that others can understand you, you will gain more self-confidence and a higher motivation level. As soon as you have reached this level, nobody can stop you ;) You will be good at grammar as well, because you’ll have more time to focus on details.
