The Lessons of 2016

You can be happy and broken. Take your time to mourn and then move forward. Good things can happen while your life is falling apart. It can always get worse. And it can always get better. You can’t control your environment, but you can control how you react to it. Keep your chin up. Tell the truth even when it’s hard. The universe will knock you down to your knees and then lift you up again and again – learn to lean into the fall. Lean into it (pain, happiness, the moment). Be kind to others. For the love of god be kinder to yourself. You learn something from every experience, even if it’s a lesson you didn’t need. You can’t expect others to treat you with respect if you don’t respect yourself. With time, almost every hard moment becomes a funny story. Your heart will break and heal again and again, and while it will get stronger, you’ll carry the scars. Don’t fall in love with an idea of something; you’ll only end up disappointed. Keep putting yourself out there. It’s terrifying, but you will always regret no trying. Stop. Drunk. Texting. Commit yourself to becoming a person you’re proud of. Remember that you are loved, even when you feel alone. Change your perspective. Be cautiously brave. Keep fighting.
