These Chernobyl puppies have spent their lives in a region still grappling with the fallout of Europe’s worst-ever nuclear disaster. But they're about to start new lives with families in the US and Canada.

CHERNOBYL EXCLUSION ZONE — A dozen puppies with satellite-dish ears and wagging tails scampered behind Natalia Melnichuk as she carried an oversize bowl of dog food. She stopped walking, turned around, and commanded the puppies to sit, showing off one of the four commands they’re required to know before leaving the small Ukrainian town of Slavutych to find new homes.

These puppies are about to become the first dogs ever to leave an area known as the Chernobyl exclusion zone and go live abroad with foreigners who’ve adopted them. The dogs have spent their lives in one of the strangest places on Earth, a region still grappling with the fallout of Europe’s worst-ever nuclear disaster.

Meet V Wegman. The 21-year-old, who identifies as nonbinary, recently completed an internship at NASA's Langley Research Center.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration's ban on most transgender people serving in the military could take effect as three cases proceed in lower courts. (Another case was left in limbo.) Wegman took to their personal Twitter to speak out against the decision.

Earlier Wednesday, Trump wrote to Pelosi that it would be “so very sad” if he couldn’t deliver the speech.

WASHINGTON — Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a letter to President Donald Trump on Wednesday he will not be able to give the State of the Union in the House chamber while the government is still shut down.

The current partial government shutdown still has no end in sight and is the longest in American history.

“I am writing to inform you that the House of Representatives will not consider a concurrent resolution authorizing the President’s State of the Union address in the House Chamber until government has opened,” Pelosi said in the letter, sent Wednesday afternoon.

Her letter comes in response to one sent earlier the same day from the White House, notifying Pelosi the president still planned on giving his speech on Tuesday, January 29 from the House chamber.

Citing security concerns because of the government shutdown, Pelosi wrote to Trump last week requesting that he delay the address or submit it in writing, but Trump did not acquiesce to the request.

“It would be so very sad for our Country if the State of the Union were not delivered on time, on schedule, and, very importantly, on location!” Trump wrote in his letter Wednesday.
