more about names i find funny besides a form of pavel meaning "shit"

a lot of names that end in "in". like liputin from the possessed, whose name means "thing that waves the flag" or "thing that makes things into flags", or rakitin whose name is a bit harder to translate since "rakki" is not a verb, but "rakki" is a deragatory term for dogs so you get something like "mutt-inator"

"rakitka" bcs idk kitka means friction but also because kitkat katkat pitkät matkat

katka is a bug

mitka and mitenka because if you replace a with ä it's asking "which ones?" and "how?"

i know people sometimes like to call pavel smerdjakov "paša" but i can never stop thinking about the fact that if you add the k to it, "paška", that's near identical to "paska" (shit) especially since finnish people mix up š- and s-sounds all the time. i don't want to make his name even more unfortunate than it already is.

i like that rakitin was there for zossima's karamazov family therapy session because he had no business being there and inviting him is such an unbelievably, unquestionably terrible idea for everyone involved from every possible perspective.

like i get the monks they were zosima's friends who literally sat with him on his deathbed. and i get the karamazov family because that was the point. but why the horny seminarian?

like genuinely the only watsonian explanation can imagine for him being invited is alyosha begged zossima to please please let him bring his emotional support bratty leftist pervert frat boy so they can exchange knowing glances from across the room

im just imagining Alyosha and Rakitin tapping eggs for Easter and Rakitin painted a wooden one to cheat and win but somehow forgot which one was the wooden one and lost to Alyosha anyways and sulked in the corner of the monastery

real. though may i suggest this: it's normal eggs but rakitin tries to cheat by like idk poking with the sharp end (this is the one "cheating" strategy i've observed lmao), but neither of their eggs crack after multiple attempts so he gets mad and accidentally breaks his own egg himself.

brothers karamazov spoilers

probably not a new observation, but i think the fact that the only evidence of smerdjakov's guilt is ivan's testimony, who is explicitly noted to be having frequent hallucinations, in a book that really emphasizes the "sources" of information that the narrator uses, is kinda a part of the whole "all the brothers are more or less guilty" thing.

the book keeps coming back to "everyone is guilty on behalf of everyone else" and i am kinda reminded of 1 john 3:15 "everyone who hates his brother is a murderer [...]" ivan thinks he is guilty of the murder by wanting and allowing it to happen, dmitri badly wanted it and came so close to doing it earlier that he practically did it, then there's aljoša and smerdjakov plus how everyone's treatment of each other in the family made this situation happen in the first place, but i won't try to unpack any of that rn.

not that pavel isn't the murderer, but it kinda redirects everything back to the fact that the truth will probably never be known and they're all guilty.

in the same way that pavel can't be confirmed to be fjodor's son, he can't be confirmed to be fjodor's murderer.

like, "in the end, does it matter who exactly it was that 'pulled the trigger' when everyone was pointing a gun the same way?"

it was free so i ended up watching the adaptation of crime and punishment where raskolnikov is a butcher with a receding hairline in 80s helsinki.

i think this guy who shows up and starts eating raskolnikov's soup is supposed to be razumihin but i was convinced it was porfiri petrovitš in disguise because to me his face looks exactly the same.

razumihin tries to speak english and then eats a match.
