You wouldn’t want to run your own label? Wouldn’t that be the ultimate dream? Putting out whatever music you want without a bunch of gross, middle aged men in suits telling you what “the people” want from you?

Maybe if I was stuck at a label like that, but I’m not. My label is run by other artists.

Ah, so more of a subjective sounding board session, but still a step that’ll push you towards the road. Which I’ve gathered you enjoy. Is it less the actual travelling you look forward to and more playing live and seeing fans from all over?

I just know that went I shoot on location somewhere, it’s wonderful for the first few weeks, but I’m never happier to eventually return home.

I guess it’s kind of a combination of both. I’m used to traveling with my family, but getting on a bus and going that way... See shit I’d never see otherwise. Places and people. Getting in front of a totally unique audience every night is kinda what makes it for us.

And I never sleep better than I do on a bus.

It’s been close to a week and a half since I’ve been back to work and I’d never thought I’d say I miss being back home, gotta be the tembleque and tostones, no shade to all the great food I get back home. If anyone needs me after work, I’ll be in the market haggling for some plantains.

I don’t celebrate Hanukkah, and I don’t have a label or an album, so…. nah. When do you get big enough to where it doesn’t matter if you put out crap, everyone has to say yes to you? I would have thought you were already there.

Big enough to be calling the shots, I mean. I don’t think your music’s crap.

When you buy and run your own label, I guess. And that’s not where we’re at quite yet. Or maybe ever.

I can’t say Hanukkah has ever incited such feelings. Opening nights and premieres, however, are an entirely a different story.

Is this meeting more of a formality? Or do you have a production head that can actually push a big red stop button and send you back to the studio?

Well, we don’t think everything’s perfect yet. And if we don’t, I’m sure our label won’t. It’s kind of crazy that we wound up on a label of absolute perfectionists. Which fits us, I mean... we’re not exactly quick to churn out new music... so it’s pretty cool to have someone who can see what the music can grow into and will hold our feet to the fire until we find it in us. Y’know?

That kid-on-Hanukkah-Eve feeling when you wake up in an excited, cold sweat at 4 a.m. because you’re meeting with your label to go over the most recent revisions on your album and, if they like it, you can get back on your tour bus again for a few test shows very soon.
