Rivulet is an interesting character, to be honest. And it shows! Having external gills and enhanced speed, also obtaining the mark of communication before finding Looks to the Moon or Five Pebbles.

Point 1: Rivulet could theoretically have been from beyond the Outer Expanse. It doesn't seem like much, but if you notice it, slugcats are nomadic creatures which have a level of intelligence that can be compared to species of birds (e.g. crows, pigeons) due to their resourcefulness (e.g. using spears, rubbish) and also ability to inhabit almost anywhere without being threatened (e.g. Garbage Wastes, Outer Expanse, iterators, iterator cities), so Rivulet's colony could have adapted to the oceanic environment (which is perfect for the placement of iterators) by having traits of semi-aquatic animals (e.g. ducks :}).

Point 2: Rivulet's colony could have two sets of respiratory organs. External gills and possibly moist skin, lungs, etc..
