Why We Ride
Why I ride
I haven’t had a chance to see the documentary “Why We Ride” just yet, but it’s made me ask myself why I ride. The hundred times I have tried to explain this to non-riders have resulted in one hundred failures; and unfortunately, this will be one too. How do you explain how a machine can garner such powerful emotions? How do you explain how you love the feeling of being alone on the road? Or the way two arms feel wrapped around your waist? Or how the scream of exhaust and wind somehow bring tranquility? How do explain the feeling of riding almost within arms reach of your brother and dad as you barrel down the highway? How can you translate the fear of nearly dying to someone who has become used to safety? How do you describe the people you meet accurately or the reason every brand loyalty doesn’t mean every other motorcycle isn’t fuckin’ cool, too? How describe the sudden happiness when you remember that you get to ride home after a terrible day at work? Or the excitement when someone says, “Dude I just bought a motorcycle!” The fact of the matter is, I can’t. For me the only answer to the question “why do you ride?” that does these feelings justice is, “Because I love it.”
