The forth target of my investigation is Maggie who is a 40 years old housewife. She has an 18-year-old son and a 5-year-old daughter

She has a traditional European-style family sofa. This sofa is even one year older than her  little daughter. The surface is made of flannel. She has complained that although she cleans it very often, it is not an easy task. In terms of craftsmanship this sofa is very good, but her children think its style is out of date. Maggie and her husband are considering a new sofa.”

“The most pleasant scene should be to invite a group of my sisters to my home. I like to invite friends to eat, drink and play card games together. If there is any requirement for the sofa choosing, I hope it looks fashion and can reflect my personal taste very well. Haha”

I think Maggie is a housewife, but she is very sociable. She is keen to have dinner with her friends and is eager to integrate into group life. She hopes to make a good impression among her friends. Judging by her request for a new sofa, she seems to want the sofa to reflect her personal tastes and gain the appreciation of her friends.

My third targets of the investigation is a male Programmer intern called John. He is 23 years old and just graduated from Uni.

John is currently sharing with three other roommates. Their living room has a leather sofa left by the landlord. “It looks more like it was left in the last century.” Said John. He bought a beanbag sofa for his bedroom. 

“Sometimes When I am tired of working on my desk, I will sit on the beanbag sofa. It seems that changing a sitting position at a later time is more conducive to my thinking. I need to keep working after I get home, but the bedroom is always too comfortable to make me sleepy. My request for the sofa is that it  will inspire me when I’m doing work.”

John's requirements for sofas are more difficult to achieve than the previous two survey targets. Sofa for him is not only the satisfaction of the body, but also the satisfaction of the spirit. But that's exactly what I want to hear. Furniture is alive. It can inspire people's lives.

Idea 1: For people like John who need to be motivated, I can design sofas to be something they like. Maybe it could be a racing car.

User survey 2

The second targets of my investigation is Lisa. I met her at a private party with my intern supervisor. She is a  27 years old Financial data analyst who has worked for 3 years.

“I personally prefer to lie on the sofa more than bed. Because I think the bed is the place to sleep, the sofa is a place for recreation. Because of the limitations of my home space, I have a double sofa, not big enough to let me lie on it. Sometimes my spine and back will feel pain after lying for a long time. I hope to have a huge sofa can give me great security in the future.”

She also told me what she thought was the most wonderful moment.

“When I got home, I immediately take off my high heels, took the potato chips out of the snack cabinet with bare feet. And I just plunged into the soft sofa, holding the snacks and watching the movies I like. Even if it's imagination, it makes me feel so happy!”

Lisa is under a lot of pressure to work because there are new difficulties every day waiting for her to solve. I think what she needs most when she gets home is a sense of security and comfort. From Lisa's imagination, I feel the comfort of floating in the clouds. It's also like a little animal curled up on a warm, soft mat.

User survey 1

My first target of the investigation called Martin who is 35 years old. He is a  interior designer has Worked for a private design company for 10 years, and he just  married with his wife half year ago.

He told me that his new house was designed by both of him and his wife. Compared to fancy design they prefer the simple style such as Japanese tatami style. So they chose a solid wood frame sofa and a linen sofa cushion. Some friends gave them advices that their decoration style is too cold. But they choose to be themselves. They like the idea of natural Zen so they want to keep their style.

Because he has free working time so he always work at midnight. The most beautiful scene he can imagine is to soak a pot of oolong tea, sit in a rocking chair and read a favorite book in a sunny afternoon.

According to the information Martin gave me, I think he is a very assertive person. A person's personality largely influenced his preferences and lifestyle, and also influenced his understanding and perception of furniture.

I chose 4 people of different ages and different occupations to con- duct interviews. In order to un- derstand the furniture currently used by customers with different economic incomes. And the ben- efits and disadvantages of the furniture they think they have. By understanding their stories will help me build user portraits or storyboards.

I also let them imagine the most pleasant scenes of returning home after a busy day.

After investigation, it was found that nearly 41.67% of people return home and choose to go to bed, and 40.48% choose to go to the living room sofa or the bean sofa to lean on the mobile video or movie.

Out of a total of 84 respondents, they would spend an average of 2.86 hours lying in bed or on the couch.

Therefore, I think that the sofa is more interactive with the user than other furniture.

This is a questionnaire completed by 84 Chinese people. After the analysis of the pie chart, I decid- ed that the research goal will be locked in among young people between the ages of 20 and 45. Their living environment and working conditions are almost evenly distributed, so the target audience of my major project will not be distinguished from these two aspects.

I investigated what state they were hold- ing when they returned home from work and study, and then thought about what products should be offered to them. 33.33% of people are happy to be home. And nearly 60% of people return home are a state of exhaustion.

I want to learn more about their emotions and use the furniture of the soul to guide and improve their emotions.
