first running club session last night. I thought it would be difficult, but I think my 7-15km/day (mostly walking) in the last 6-8weeks has helped build a good base - in fact it was very comfortable. I’ll try out a higher pace group next week, and the following week I’ll see if I’m up for the 10km group.
Most people are open books. They say what they feel, blurt out their opinions at every opportunity, and constantly reveal their plans and intentions. They do this for several reasons. First, it is easy and natural to always want to talk about one’s feelings and plans for the future. It takes effort to control your tongue and monitor what you reveal. Second, many believe that by being honest and open they are winning people’s hearts and showing their good nature. They are greatly deluded. Honesty is actually a blunt instrument, which bloodies more than it cuts. Your honesty is likely to offend people; it is much more prudent to tailor your words, telling people what they want to hear rather than the coarse and ugly truth of what you feel or think. More important, by being unabashedly open you make yourself so predictable and familiar that it is almost impossible to respect or fear you, and power will not accrue to a person who cannot inspire such emotions.

>increase in japanese-language input? which main areas for jp in general? --> shadowing, kanji, _readingは?
internal monologue in jp like last week is created by_?
there were endless nights shivering as my bones frosted over and I could see nothing (the ice kept my eyelids shut) remember that it hurt to hold a pen in numb bony fingers and I couldn’t move my toes except in a shower so hot my body turned red. remember that it hurt just to sit down, stand up, lie down. remember sit-ups on hard floors sent agony up my spine. remember hours lost in supermarkets just staring remember remember but don’t go back.
because sometimes I still long for it, in spite of everything. I remind myself why I’m better where I am. (via j-ir)

Some things in life are too complicated to explain in any language. Not just to explain to others, but to explain to yourself. Force yourself to try to explain it, and you create lies.

Peter and David Turnley in Tiananmen Square, 1989.
June 4th marks the 26th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre as Chinese troops cracked down on civilian and student demonstrators holding a pro-democracy and pro-reform occupation in the center of Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. Brothers, identical twins and Corbis contributors, Peter and David Turnley were witnesses to this grave and historical event.
