"When Dolly first hit the scene she was writing songs about things no one had the nerve to. Pretty punk rock, if you ask me. This song is one of her most bizarre. It's terrifying - she sings half of it in a child's voice and in the end everyone dies... Gotta love Dolly for that! One moment it's sweet songs about love and Jesus and the next it's all whores, moonshine, death and destruction! I absolutely adore her. I heard a rumour that underneath all those sequins she's covered in tattoos. She just gets better and better."

"I remember the first time I saw this video. MTV had a program called 120 Minutes that I was completely obsessed with. It was all the indie bands that never made it into heavy rotation. Sonic Youth came on my screen and I was totally blown away. They were the epitome of cool. So sexy, so raw and their sound was completely different. I loved [frontman] Thurston Moore's lazy delivery but more than anything I appreciated their confidence. I wanted to be Kim Gordon [bass]."

"The Cure was the soundtrack to every heartbreak I had in high school. Robert Smith [frontman] is a god to me. There was a period of about five years where I dressed up like him for Hallowe'en. I had the privilege of meeting him once and I asked him if he had ever heard of my band. He said, 'Unfortunately, I have'. I laughed and later that night he bit my nose. True story! Boys Don't Cry is the first song I learned to play on bass."

"The Beastie Boys were my favourite band in high school. I loved their bratty-ness. They were ridiculous and over the top and completely unafraid to look silly. I still look up to them for that. When I was 17 I left home and moved to Brooklyn. I sang this to myself the entire way there."

"My mother played The Carpenters a lot when I was growing up. Karen Carpenter's voice is so haunting and beautiful.
