What’s that peeking up over the horizon? Is it…could it possibly be…? Yes! It’s the end of finals and the beginning of summer! Our destination is approaching!
A few weeks ago, someone mentioned that the inside of Wyatt looks like the outside of a cruise ship. I see this space everyday, but I had never seen it in that way before. Now, I cannot get that image out of my head. It's always a fun time on the S.S. Wyatt.
10:55 AM: Walk to class on a rainy Thursday. Spot a lonely green mug abandoned at the entrance of a college dorm. Wonder why college students leave cups in random locations.
2:30 PM: Walk out of the library. Spot a lonely purple mug cowering at the base of a lamp post.
2:31 PM: What should I do with these mugs that are clearly unfit to survive in the wilderness of Peabody Esplanade?
2:31 PM: Brain- “You should return them to the dining hall, obviously.”
2:32 PM: Heart- “They are clearly soulmates separated by unfortunate circumstances and a wide expanse of sidewalks. You must give these star-crossed lovers a chance to live happily ever after.”
2:37 PM: Heart wins.
I know these mugs are technically in perfectly good condition, but if cups had spirits, theirs would be broken. I like to think they found some happiness at last.

I made a heart for my roommate and asked her to destroy it ten different ways, without telling her that she would have to put it back together again afterwards. Destroying it was easy, but putting it back together was much harder than anticipated.

My friend described her favorite childhood object as a turquoise pony with a white halter, and said that she squeezed the pony so tightly that its rear was “disproportionately larger than the rest of her body”.
Her reaction to my recreation (made with paper, colored pencil, staples, cotton balls, and ribbon): “Yes! It’s great! Except for the color...”
Somehow I find it hard to believe that the biggest difference between my version and the original toy is a slightly different shade of turquoise.

Empty Chairs at Empty Tables (Claude-Michel Schonberg, Les Miserables)
Rand dining hall long after the lunch crowd has left and and just before the dinner rush begins. It’s a weird in-between time that never gets advertised in glossy brochures about college life. I can never decide whether this time of day is peaceful or lonely.

As I listened to Molly Springfield talk about what is lost in the repeated transition from material to digital, I instantly thought of picture books. I knew a picture book could never be completely captured by a standard copier, even when copied only once, so I wanted to see what would happen if I copied and modified the same page over and over. I ended up copying and altering the first page of Dan Santat’s Caldecott Medal winner, The Adventures of Beekle the Unimaginary Friend, about 9 times. I then layered some of the copies on top of one another to capture the progression of loss. Even the first copy wasn’t a stellar representation of the page, but by the very last copy, all that is left is so far removed from context that it really does need imagination to give it any meaning.

I wanted my fake landscape to be as different from the real, snowy one as possible. The beach seemed like the ideal solution. -Sarah Beck
