Where’s Schierke? #Ivalera #Berserk #berserkcosplay
Still can’t believe we have Casca back ;o; !!!
It’s international cosplay day today. Reblog this post with your Berserk cosplays.
I’ll go first.
The return of the peanut gallery
I wonder how much the PTSD Casca gets from looking at Guts is actually from looking at Guts’ face and how much of it is influenced by the Berserker Armor’s bad vibes.
Cause that would be an interesting dilemma for Guts. Take the armor off to be with Casca but unable to fight toe-to-toe with the Apostles, or keep it on to continue fighting with a chance to survive but unable to ever be with Casca again, even casually.
Of course the answer would be “kill all the Apostles so you can take it off permanently” but we haven’t heard yet what Casca thinks about Griffith, and wether or not it’s related to what she wants.
Casca more than anyone would understand what Guts is like, to be uncomfortable without a sword by his side, finding meaning only when fighting. I’m sure she wouldn’t ask him to just lay everything down.
Going back to what I said about the Berserker Armor, it’s acknowledged that that shit is bad mojo.
I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily evil, but it’s been stewing in feelings of hate for very long, I wouldn’t be surprised if Casca were to be sensitive to the od that surrounds the armor and Guts as well.
At one point during a reread of Berserk, I got to the battle against the trolls in Enoch village before realizing that all of Guts’ scars had disappeared. I thought that was a little odd, so I searched back through to see when exactly it had happened and came across something very interesting.
Everyone’s wounds disappear when they stay overnight in Flora’s mansion (Ch 203).
The night before (Ch 202), you can see that Guts in particular is still, as always, covered in tiny little marks, no matter what distance he’s drawn at.
All of them are gone by the time they’re leaving, except for two. The Brand of Sacrifice, and the little one across the bridge of his nose.
Schierke’s wording in the first picture becomes important when you think about it: what has disappeared are ‘minor’ wounds and ‘recent’ wounds. That she bothers to point out the difference means that it SHOULD heal scars. But it hasn’t, here. And if it hasn’t, then the reason it hasn’t is that the ethereal body that the physical body should be matching up with is ALSO wounded.
That the Brand of Sacrifice didn’t disappear is unsurprising, of course: Flora herself can’t erase it, and it was left on Guts by a being that can directly wound ethereal bodies. Slan pulls this same trick later on when she leaves the wound across Guts’ chest.
But why wouldn’t a scar as tiny as the one across his nose not be suddenly gone?
(Ch 222)
Simple. Though it’s a small thing, it’s still significant to his soul. The two biggest traumas in Guts’ life are the Eclipse and everything surrounding Gambino: dealing with the reality that his adoptive father sold him to Donovan, tried to kill him, and was killed BY him. Before the Eclipse occurred, deep-seated hurts relating to Gambino popped up a lot. Just off the top of my head I can list things like Guts’ outright stating to Casca how laughable it is that he can’t get over killing Gambino, his touch-aversion, the recurrent nightmares that feature Gambino with his head hanging half off and telling Guts he should have died, the unsubtle parallel between Guts and Gambino’s relationship and Adonis and Julius’ relationship and how badly killing both of them messed with him because of it.
The wound Gambino left on Guts runs much deeper than the little scar he put across his nose, it’s something that Guts has been carrying forever, and STILL carries: it’s just not had as much attention paid to it since the focus of the story shifted to the effect the Eclipse had on Guts. Even so, something like that upbringing doesn’t just magically go away.
Obviously, the actual reason that the scar didn’t disappear is that it’s iconic to Guts’ character design, but that there is a possible in-universe justification for it is just SO great.

I definitely appreciate the strict moderation on sk.net, even if it does admittedly make it less fertile for spitballing and fandom chatter.
imo sk.net is a little too harsh to newcomers to the series, though with somewhat of a good reason, I would hate the same questions that have been answered in older threads or by paying more attention to be manga or even the wiki being asked over and over. At the same I feel like it fosters a know-it-all attitude in long term users, who although they have a very good grasp on the series and it’s themes, use their seniority to put down new ideas. “I’m right because I’ve been reading the series long and you’re just some noob” is the attitude I feel is prevalescent in there.
On the other hand, the subreddit is too unstructured to foster conversations in good will, even with a second subreddit to send their shitty idolm@ster jokes to: r/berserklejerk. But like I said, some gems are gleaned here and there, small as they are.
theozilla replied to your post “I could recommend some series that are just as good if not even better...”
Even then Vinland Saga isn't that similar to Berserk either. VS is very much a historical fiction series, while Berserk is high fantasy. Both series get overly-defined by their initial prologue arcs.
tbh I haven’t really read the manga or watched the current series, but I was aware that some fans gravitated towards it. Also some people genuinely mistake Berserk as a “historical” series or admittedly liked the medieval parts of it and not the fantasy bits
askthegothamvillesirens replied to your post “Also I finally ship Farnesca again after a shitty run in with people...”
Casca x Farnese would be just overt-kill given how much pain Guts has already been through. I'd leave the whole party behind in Elfhiem in his shoes at that point.
I would think he’d be happy to see Casca happy. Also like, Serpico’s right there? They can be a lovey-dovey power couple too. Or with Roderick although he probably tops.
Going against the grain here but I’m fucking glad that Casca has some form of PTSD.
Sounds bad but it was pretty naive to expect a 100% happy reunion. Secondly, it’s the logical conclusion. What happened during the Eclipse.....did y’all really think it would just magically disappear? That it would all go away from Casca’s mind? It shows pretty well just how extremely traumatic it was for her, it’s not a thing she can just “get over” even with magical help. Think back on the chapter where they finally completed the Casca doll, her heart was still enveloped in thorns.
Also, for stories to move forward there has to be conflict. This is the new conflict to deal with so that Berserk and its characters can advance, if what you want is for Berserk to continue you should be looking forward to conflict.
The berserk subreddit is the worst thing ive ever seen. It's full of people who only like berserk for the violence/edginess and not the overarching themes or character depth. It's infuriating.
Oof, I certainly hate it more than I love it....there’s some good bits like edits and the colorized pages that some people post and occasionally you’ll get some people with good insights, but those are far and in-between. There’s a lot of “I wish this would happen” which is nice and all but also completely shove to the side the pacing and themes of the story, like how Casca would’ve handled Farnese’s past behaviour, some people were taking really long routes about how they would talk about it and eventually “forgive” Farnese or some shit like that.
It’s like the other side of the scale from sk.net whom I don’t hate but I certainly don’t hold much love for either.
Also I finally ship Farnesca again after a shitty run in with people who ship it and also called my friends and I homophobes and straighties with the intend to offend us.
I’m shoving my way into loving that pairing, I don’t care anymore.
Can ya’ll finally shut the fuck up about Farnese getting away with things?
Spoilers for the new chapter under the cut
I could recommend some series that are just as good if not even better than Berserk (yes, I said better bitch), but honestly I don’t want the majority of this shitty fandom to taint them.
“I can’t imagine anything better than Berserk!!!” Then you lack a lot of imagination and open mindness, also read some fucking more, it’s not hard to find like two or three excellent series, but you gotta dig and get rid of some prejudices.
@kuroishiba
then say? I'd like to read some more but there hasn't been a lot to catch my interest. my free time is about as common as new Berserk captures.
I like you quite a bit so for you I’ll give out a couple of recs. Mind you, these are not 1:1 similar to Berserk series, they’re not gloomy semi-medieval fantasy series, they’re just titles that are excellent by themselves and deserve more people to love them.
1. Lady Snowblood - This is probably the most Berserk-like title I can recommend; essentially, this is what people want Casca to be. Set in the Meiji Era, Yuki is an assassin looking to complete her mother’s grudge against a group of people who destroyed her family and life. If you like Berserk for it’s violence then this is a series you should give a try, Yuki is quite a notable heroine (anti-heroine?) and I’m surprised she doesn’t feature in more “favorite female character” lists. There’s also a live action movie (haven’t seen it though). The manga was translated and published in the west by Dark Horse comics, the same ones that publish Berserk! What a nice coincidence~!
2. Petshop of Horrors - If the themes of human emotions, trauma and horror are what draws you to Berserk then this series might catch your attention. Count D is a mysterious man who manages a pet shop in Chinatown where he sells everything from common pets to mythical creatures. The series is somewhat episodic, featuring a new pet and whoever adopts it managing to overcome their different problems. On the other hand there’s also the cat-and-mouse relationship between Count D and Detective Leon Orcot, who just knows that there’s something fishy about the shop. There was a 4 episode OVA that adapted 4 chapters directly from the manga, it’s pretty good but I would recommend reading the first chapter of the series first for some context. The series was translated in its entirety by Tokyopop (anybody remember that publisher?) though it might be a little hard to find good scans. There’s also a sequel called Shin/New Petshop of Horrors (Petshop of Horrors - Tokyo, in the west) so if you like the series there’s still a lot more to enjoy.
There’s a couple of anime series I’d like to recommend but I’m just gonna go with “Made in Abyss”. Again, not a Berserk-like series at all but the anime has some very high production values, the animation and music are excellent, the story is unfinished still but it’ll leave you wanting for more.
General public: “None of these is like Berserk!” yes, that’s kind of the point. If you don’t want variety then go read Vinland Saga and play Dark Souls. Part of what makes Berserk great is that it’s unique so you’ll be hard pressed to find something that is “just as good” when what you really want is “more of exactly the same”.
I could recommend some series that are just as good if not even better than Berserk (yes, I said better bitch), but honestly I don’t want the majority of this shitty fandom to taint them.
