Prototype II: Digital Sanctuary for a Digital God -- Lo-fi VR Preview
Aesthetic Prototype I: Digital Sanctuary for a Digital God using Augmented Reality
Prototype II: Digital Sanctuary as sacred space for a Digital God
Prototype I: Digital Sanctuary
Digital God as the new God is a metaphor explored through the context of sacred space being used to access or to become attuned with the divine. The spaces both elicit awe and mystification. Institutionally constructed sacred spaces have dualistic experiences of sanctuary and ritual but also throughout history have been spaces that have been erected as hegemonic symbols of power.Â
This project aims to construct an analogous digital sacred space by using and abstracting server architecture to play upon technologies also dualistic capacity for immense good while also making a commentary on its capacity to be an exploitative system reinforcing inequitable power exchanges.Â
Nineteen-Eighty-Four
Nineteen Eighty-Four," is an interactive display that shows house address numbers extracted from Google Street View images. The numbers have an immense variety of fonts, colors, textures and styles, as they were scanned by Google from the front doors of buildings from all over the World.
Rafael’s main interest is in creating platform platforms for public participation, by perverting technologies such as robotics, computerized surveillance or telematic networks.
Simple Harmonic Motion #12 for 16 Percussionists at RNCM
This performance is a ritualistic ode to chaos and order, inspired by the collisions between man and machine; the harmonies, tensions and conflicts between science, technology, culture, tradition and religion. The human performers are controlled by a central computer. Each performer receives individual cues via in-ear monitors, and they do the best they can to act out the commands they receive — when to step forward and become active, when to hit, when to step back and become inactive etc. The individual performers don’t need to be aware of the ‘bigger’ picture, i.e. the composition, the show. They individually execute their own cues, and perform very simple, tedious, monotonous tasks. Each performer hits his/her own drum at fixed time intervals producing a sound and triggering a light. However, collectively they are a complex creature, controlled by the machine, playing out the complex audio-visual composition, drifting in and out of sync, shifting between order and chaos and back.
Data Cafe
DataCafe.biz is an installation that allows a person to transact a single piece of their personal data in exchange for a homemade cookie. By making this transaction explicit for the user we highlight the value of personal data and question how the human is considered in a data driven society.
FLOW: Immersive digital waves to visualize nature
The idea is to give enough intelligence and randomness to the system so the visuals becomes organic and unpredictable. The last few years I have been mainly focusing on experimenting with sound and visuals. This project was an opportunity to expand my field of research on adding real time data to transform nature data into a poetic interpretation. Mirroring the relationship between nature and art to reconsiders the implications of human presence in the natural world.
Sensible Data: Fun in exchange for personal data
Sensible Data by Martin Hertig is an installation that asks what personal data is worth to you. Using a photo of you and an email, it gives you a self-portrait sketch and guess at your mood, age, gender, and beauty based on your words. In the last step, the user presses a button for a nice stamp. There’s a catch though.
This project allowed me to explore the issues of ‘confidence’ surrounding data collection systems: fun in exchange for personal data. After having completed the playful process, the user receives also an email from the installation, sending him all the data of a previous user (fingerprint, photo and email) that matches based on an absurd criteria (The amount of lines of the portrait).

Day 7Â
This processing sketch coordinates mousepressed positions and drag with two shapes extracted from the MoCap raw file. The first shape positions at random when the mouse is pressed at random. This is contrasted by the second shape whose positioning is determined by the location of the mouse press
Anthropomorphism & Abstraction
Day 6
This processing sketch positions MoCap image file segments at random when mouse is pressed in order to tie together physical movement with the human movement represented by the image files.
Day V
Anthropomorphism & Abstraction
Processing Sketch where the MoCap motion tracking data is layered with movement of a user’s mouse drag. The color of the mouse drag is determined by the pixel position on which the mouse is pressed.

Day IV
Raw data image converted into vector shapes in Illustrator and animated in After Effects.

Day III
Visualization created, only using raw data from file without any supplementary shapes or forms.
