Sketchy owl painting/study thing. I was planning on cleaning it up a bit but whelp Yes I’m still obsessed with this lighting. Oh and this is a Northern Saw-Whet Owl
Some dog head study sketches for different shapes & sizes of dogs. I’m planning on shading and/or coloring (hopefully) all of them.
Some creature design sketches. I’m calling them Crivenes (I think, could subject to change in the future)
I’ve been dying to get some good ones down for ages. I’ve just been having trouble getting the creature to look the way I want it to.
The are big-eared, curious, extremely intelligent, emotional, bloopy big ol’ things. Can be trained by humans and are big enough to be ridden by most people (200 lb max), but due to their intelligence they have a mind of their own. If you treat them well, however, they will form a very deep bond with you and stay with for the rest of your life (their lifespans are approximately 60 years). The longer they stay with, the better they understand you. For example, if you’ve been with a Crivene for 3 years they could understand several-sentence requests you give them, but wouldn’t be able to really understand a conversation you are having with another human. They are omnivores, but eat mostly fish. They have hand-like paws with retractable claws that allow to the handle things, but don’t have super good fine motor skills. The feathers on their necks move move around according to their emotions. (i.e. droopy/sad, flat/calm, rigid/scared, perky/curious).
So I made this dragon sketch ages ago and I think it’s a really cool idea but I just haven’t touched it since?? I have no idea if I’m going to finish it or not
Clouded leopard WIP I love how much I’ve improved with color lately! I still have a long way to go, but I’m planning on going into some more detail so I wanted to get the WIP out to motivate me to finish.
So here’s some info on what my cat-owl is from this post: https://skiissa.tumblr.com/image/172393464390 Her name is Kalypso. She was a half-kneazle half-cat that I tried to transfigured into a barn owl but failed miserably and poor Kalypso’s stuck as a cat-owl now. I know you guys probably don’t care but whatever I overthink everything and like to sketch it out
So I’m re-reading Harry Potter and I just wanted to doodle myself in Hogwarts. I’m a Ravenclaw, and I’d be totally into magical creatures & transfiguration. I’d be in my fourth year right now.
But what’s the cat thing?? I was joked with my friend and we decided that I would get a cat for my pet, but in my first year I would totally overestimate my ability and try to transfigured my cat into an owl. It would fail miserably and I would be struck with Cat-Owl thing that even McGonagall couldn’t reverse. So that’s why my cat-owl looks very worried while watching me do magic. She doesn’t trust me anymore.
Ack I hate drawing myself
A GREAT PRACTICE FOR LEARNING LIGHT & COLOR VALUES I made this practice activity after being inspired by @tamberella’s advice she gave me after I asked her a question about me struggling with adding unnecessary details (and I tied in values with shadows & bright light sources cuz I needed to work on that too), but the general idea of this practice can be used for almost anything you struggle with in art. You make three drawing total in the end. (Photo number ⬆️ generally corresponded with step number) It goes like this: 1) Find a reference photo with the lighting you want to work on. Draw that photo exactly, sketch the pose, free free to color drop the colors. START WITH VERY MESSY, BLOCKY COLORS. 2) Slowly blend it in and add detail however much you want. I decided to keep the whole thing generally messy since it was just practice, but whatever. 3) Find ANOTHER photo of similar subject (I chose black-backed jackals) with DIFFERENT lighting. Use some of the color drops colors from the FIRST photo, but also make some of your own. 4) Now draw the SECOND reference photo with the FIRST PHOTO’S LIGHTING. Stay blocky at first again, and blend & detail as you go on. 5) Now you are going to completely do it on your own, NO MORE REFERENCE PHOTO. Sketch the stance freehand. You can use your palette from step 3, but you will probably need to make a few more colors on your own. If you want, don’t use any of your old palettes, and start learning how to make those colors on your own. 6) Draw your OWN SKETCH in the same lighting as the other two drawings. Again again again, stay blocky, then touch up. Now you’ve had lots of practice and should be pretty familiar with the subject. Go draw a real painting with that lighting. Idk. Have fun I guess. I hope this helps someone, I know I found it quite fun to do. I will definitely do it sometime again in the future.
I’ve always liked to make very realistic and detailed art, but when I draw I try to add way too much unnecessary detail. Like, whenI look at your art I can see it looks realistic, but it doesn’t have that unnecessary detail. I’m not sure if I’m making sense, but (for example) I feel like I have to draw every single hair of fur but I see your art and even though you didn’t draw every hair it looks like you did with the way you captured the lighting. Any suggestions with how to get over this?
I do have some suggestions for this!
1) Try using only a large brush with no pressure sensitivity settings enabled. This forces you to work in large swathes of color with no option for getting into the nitty gritty of detail. Once you have completed a few paintings with a large brush you can work your way slowly toward integrating smaller details where the benefit the painting. Check out the artist PixelPChan for inspiration. I recommend using a square brush or a brush with an angle to it.
2) Try taking a reference photo and then using one or multiple of the following filters in Photoshop to remove extraneous details and simplify the color palette. Example:
No filter:
Surface blur:
Filter Gallery - Sponge
These effects obviously aren’t anywhere near perfect, and they need to be assisted with artistic intent and vision. But they can be very helpful for figuring out how to group your color and where to add your detail. They can help you figure out exactly how much information is necessary to get an idea across, and then you can add more in the most attractive places from that point.
Once you have reached a point where you can get across your vision with the minimum level of detail work, I’ve found it’s just a matter of adding detail back in in the most important, desirable places. This way you can use detail as a way to lead the eye around the piece and toward your focal area(s).
Thanks so much tamberella!

This was an acrylic painting I did for school of my sister’s horse, Jewel (her show name is Rumor Has It). It was my first time doing an acrylic painting, and so I’m very happy with it! I actually finished a month ago but I just got it back from school now. any questions and/or critiques are welcome!
i did this to practice values with reflections & freckles & hair and stuff. Basically to practice portraits in general in art class. It was planning on using only graphite but my teacher saw me struggling and showed me how to use charcoal instead, and it made it so much better I would definitely suggest it. I struggled with the hair a bit but I think it worked in the end. Overall, it turned out super good and I’m happy with it! I used a refrence photo but I got the photo off of google months before I actually started the piece, so I don’t know who to give credit for the refrence photo. So, credit to whoever you are, thanks so much. Any critiques and/questions are always welcome!
Um... sir, that won’t work. That bolt IS A CIRCLE. You’ll get about as much torque applied to that bolt as I’ll get motivation to get my life together
—“I had a crooked smile that made teachers immediately peg me as a troublemaker” —“...with an expression so you couldn’t tell if was the bad guy or the good guy. She swore that was exactly how I looked” —“I slashed and stabbed and whirled, and I might have even laughed once or twice—a crazy laugh that scared me as much as it did my enemies.” ——————————————————————————————— I was rereading PJO and was inspired to draw this. This is the first I’ve drawn Percy where I feel like he actually looks like Percy. (This is from The Last Olympian time frame). Of course this is just a doodle, I did it mostly to keep practicing humans and poses. I think I’m getting there. If I got any of the quotes wrong I’m sorry, but I could not find most of them in the books for the life of me. Any questions or critiques are welcome!
🎵Bill Clye the Banjo Guy🎵 🎵Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill!🎵
So here’s a character I made just now, I don’t really have a backstory. My math teacher started playing guitar music and I felt inspired to draw a guy playing a banjo (I know guitar and banjo are very different but one inspired the other idk why). The character formed from some ideas I’ve had floating around for awhile, and you’ll probably see more of him the the future. His full name is William Matthews Clye. He goes by his middle name, the Bill thing was a joke with a friend.
I was practicing a lot of things while drawing this. I feel like I’m actually getting a grip on drawing humans (yay!) but definitely could still get better at it, but I was practicing skin tones and the colors they make with shadows and stuff. I was also testing out Procreate’s new wet painting update, which I really like so far. If I drew the banjo totally wrong please forgive me I’m not even sure I’ve ever seen a banjo irl before
So I drew my diagram up top because I didn’t read that that is what part b already was, but I didn’t feel like erasing and redrawing it so I doodled a dragon in space. I wasn’t expecting a response but yOU GO MR.SUNSET YOU ARE NOW MY FAVORITE TEACHER
