“Is Hannibal in love with me” is such an iconic line for Will. I know a lot of times we use it as comedic content, because to the audience it’s obvious that he is, but I think it really just reflects how hesitant Will is to believe that someone who has seen him at his very worst, who was known him so intimately, can experience something as deep as the love Hannibal feels for him. It’s got the same undertones of defeat, just like when Hannibal says to Bedelia many episodes before, “we have no control over whom we love” or something along those lines. Hannibal and Will have experienced isolation and a lack of the connection they lend each other for so long- arguably their entire lives- that the idea of it being not only returned but accepted seems laughable, even if deep down they know it’s true.

Hannibal/Dracula Parallels:
Basically my thoughts go like this; Will Graham is a version of Jonathan Harker and Hannibal Lecter is a version of Count Dracula.
Both Dracula and Hannibal can be described as "gentlemen monsters", both feed off of human life, and both take a "bride".
Will, though under very different circumstances, is thrown into Hannibal's orbit and care much the same as Harker is entrusted to serve Dracula.
Dracula grows attached to Harker and wants him for himself. Hannibal has similar feelings about Will.
When Harker is under Dracula's care, he believes that he is going crazy, and when he finally escapes, he is found with a "brain fever". Likewise, Will experiences hallucinations under Hannibal's care, and we find out that this is due to encephalitis (brain fever.)
Another point is that when Dracula lost Harker, he focuses on Mina Murray, Harker's fiance. Likewise, barred from Will, Hannibal seduces Lana Bloom, Will's love interest.
Another nod to Dracula comes when Hannibal first meets Will and then brings him breakfast. In this scene he very pointedly asks to be invited, just as is necessary for Dracula to enter a home.
The parallels are compelling, but it's where the story and the characters deviate that make it truly beautiful.
For instance, Dracula has an affinity with animals, especially dogs and wolves. However, Will is the one with these powers, and just like Dracula, he can silence wild dogs just by raising his hand. This fact places aspects of the monster within Will.
Then there is the matter of compassion. In Dracula, it is Mina Murray who feels compassion for Dracula and who is mentally linked to him so that she can see into his mind as he can see into hers. This role is fulfilled by Will, who has every reason to want revenge against Hannibal, but cannot escape their link and instead has compassion for him.
In Dracula, Mina ensures that everyone knows that when they destroy Dracula, it will not be an act of hate, but an act of love. Similarly, Will fully accepts his and Hannibal's nature, and destroys them both as an act of love.
That's my TED talk for today.
Would you mind expanding on what you were saying on twitter about hannibal's outfits in s1?
YASSS - in a heartbeat. So, the crux of what I was saying on twitter was that over the course of season 1 Hannibal’s outfit choices become more restrained, his person suit pulling tighter in an attempt to guard himself from suspicion. As we look at aperitif, the colours are bright and light…
Also that fringe is loose and casual. In Aperitif we see Hannibal at his most innocent, particularly in those blues and beige’s, it’s interesting how you get that colour shift into the darker tone, the brown, during/after the fated call to the Hobbs house.
During potage in particular, we begin to see more of how Hannibal works, with protecting Abigail from nick boyles murder and meeting with her at the end of the episode in this last shot, the fringe is already being swept back, not as tightly as it will be, but in the deception with Abigail, that is where it starts (and you could say, where it’ll end too.)
Progressing through episdoe 5, 6, and 7 it just gets darker, in the middle shot from entree, you can see Hannibal as the Chesapeake Ripper, angry at Gideon’s imitation, and the light shirt and tie are gone, all blues and browns which will also become more prominent during Season 2 when Will knows what Hannibal is, also, that hair is as swept back as it will be come Savoureux.
In this last shot from Sorbet, the hair drops down again, the tones lighten up. This is psychiatrist Hannibal, willing to help the FBI Hannibal, and that continues through to the end of the episode. Becoming more apparent as Hannibal saves a life, he’s revealing a bit of himself here, the career he ditched so he wouldn’t be as much of a suspicion, and Will clocks it, but that casual fringe falls forward again.
Episodes 8 and 9 you can see the trend continuing, the combinations of colours just get darker and darker, particular darker shades of that brown which started off this whole deception back in aperitif.
That casual fringe is completely gone, it’s all about the security and restraint, but also about the fringe not being there for Hannibal to hide behind, he’s more opaque and more transparent in one element of a costume change, it’s so clever and I love it so much.
In Savoureux, this is all taken to the extreme…
Not only are the suits darker than they’ve ever been, the shadows emphasise this, and there is no longer anything for him to hide behind. Although Hannibal is in the shadows to certain characters (Jack, Alana etc) he’s visible to others, (Will, Abigail)
Although Hannibal is seen as an indomitable, unmoving character, he changes hugely, his ‘out there’ outfit choices are all very him because they’re ‘out there’ but there’s a lot of scope to use that to reveal in a very subtle way, the forces acting on him (Will) whether he likes it or not (he likes it, it’s Will.) Season 1 could almost be viewed as Hannibal mourning the loss of some of his own autonomy, his interest in Will gifts Will power (and certainly it’s shown here) and this only continues through the other seasons.
But yeah, I LOVE THIS SHOOOOWWWWW
i am so curious! what puts the feminine in hannibal's monstrous feminine
the monstrous-feminine is a theory that horror can come from the association with feminine qualities as monstrous. a lot of horror theory comes from the 90s and is based on freudian nonsense (either functionally talking about freudian theory, or on the consequences of a social belief in freudian nonsense). it’s very much based around sex and biological essentialism so take it with a grain of salt. it was originally used to challenge women being the victims in horror, but it can also be used to talk about how men with feminine traits are viewed as horrifying. that’s why so much of early horror features castration, phallic objects used on men (being stabbed with a knife == being penetrated), a focus on menstruation, etc.
basically all horror theory is based around how straight cis male creators dominating the horror genre project their own bigotry onto their works, which is successful because they write for fellow straight white cis men. actual good horror works to subvert those expectations by allegorically revealing that by viewing people different from you as the “other,” you yourself are the monster in the story (black friday, the thing, fuckin... friday the 13th). monstrous-feminine visuals are used to appeal to your inherent fear of men being subjected to the horrors of being womanly, and to further alienate women from you (assuming u are a cis man)
anyway all of that is to say that the monstrous-feminine theory can be applied in equal measure to gay characters and it’s all over the place in hannibal nbc. hannibal is desperate for a family and want something to nurture and take care of, he’s tidy, meticulous, obsessed with beauty, and he consumes men. will has a lot of the same traits bc they’re foils and the whole show is an exploration of, like, sameness and love and controlling your basest desires. hannibal embraces will and stabs him with a curved knife. they both take blood spray to the face at some point. what do you want me to say
