IS IT WORTHWHILE TO CHECK MY OWN SKIN?
The real question is can I pick something that is abnormal on my skin. Many people believe they do not have the expertise to pick an abnormal mole on themselves. Although this may be technically correct, all people have an innate ability to pick something that is abnormal-like someone acting suspiciously. You don’t have to do a special course in “abnormal behaviour “to believe something is not right
It has been shown that many people, despite their perceptions to the contrary, can pick abnormal moles. Many moles can look unusual and not be dangerous but the message here is do not ignore your own feelings about such moles and get them checked.
There are areas of ones body that it is very difficult to see yourself. In this situation you need someone else to periodically check these areas e.g. your back. In this situation you can get someone else to periodically check these area for you
ARE MELANOMAS ALWAYS DARK MOLES?
Melanomas are usually dark, irregular in colour and shape and flat. However, occasionally, they can appear as red, flat or as a lump. Most people may not think of these moles as potentially dangerous, however they should not be ignored. In this situation the diagnosis may only made after a biopsy and pathological examination
If you are suspicious get it checked
Computer mole screening may miss this type of abnormal mole and a human eye, at present is much more reliable
The skin’s colour cells can sometimes stop producing pigment and resume this activity later, thus some moles can temporarily appear to have lighter areas. This is not necessarily a worrying sign as later the mole may resume its usual darker colour.
HOW TO PICK A SUSPICIOUS MOLE
1/ The mole just looks odd. Don’t ignore your own feelings about it
2/ The mole is itchy, painful or irritable, repeatedly bleeds or just does not feel right
3/ Another test is to stick your fingernail into the mole or squeeze it between your fingers. If it is sore or irritable this maybe a suspicious sign. Despite this moles that are irritated but not suspicious can also show this tendency. This type of irritation will usually settle by itself within a few weeks. So, if a mole, for no apparent reason, continues to be irritable for more than a few weeks, for no apparent reason, you should have it checked
4/ the mole looks significantly different from the surrounding moles
5/ The mole has changed over recent times. This type of change usually occurs over weeks to months. The most common non-dangerous change is usually short lived over a week to ten days and settles by itself. This usually denotes irritation. However, if this repeatedly occurs for no apparent reason you should have it checked.
