(( Hey all, sorry for the inactivity, but I’m going to be dropping both Skye (skyedxncer) and Nat (hoenn-tides) -- and possibly repurposing those blogs, so unfollowing is recommended. I had an awesome time here while it lasted, though, and it’s helped springboard me in my writing. Thanks, everyone, and I hope you have a good one! ))
Sylvia egarly watched Skye as xe continued the act. Even though she didn’t want to know the secret behind the magic, she couldn’t help but watch closely for anything that would give a clue as to what xe was doing.
Was it new technology?
Was is mirrors and lighting tricks?
Or maybe it was just plain old Pokemon power?
Regardless of what it was, the mystery was great and the performance was greater.
The sudden whistle made Sylvia flinch and the sudden smoke wasn’t really fun either. Once the shock and smoke cleared away, she had to take a moment to try and realize what happened. Xe disappeared…and was replaced by the small, green pokemon in front of her.
She couldn’t help but pap the Fraxture on the head. Just to make sure it was real and not an illusion that Skye conjured up. “…You know, at first glance I never thought you’d be a Fraxture. Maybe…I don’t know, a Riolu? Or maybe even a Raichu…? But hey, dragons are cool too.”
Skye watched silently from the side as Mars took his place. The Fraxture huffed at Sylvia when she bopped his head, batting away her hand. “Frax, ure,” he said, probably insisting the superiority of dragon types or some such topic.
Pluto hummed softly in Skye’s ear, quietly asking how long xe intended to stretch the illusion. After all, once the novelty wore off, everything became far less appealing - that was something that many years of contest experience had drilled into xem.
In response, xe drew a circle in Pluto’s fur; wait, it meant. Have patience. But stand by, too.
The Zoroark tapped xem back, and Skye turned xyr attention back to Mars, who was turning in a circle and walking up and down the stage, broadcasting his voice in confident Poke-speech that nobody would probably understand. It was the appearance that counted, however, in this case.
Once the Fraxture finished his latest lap through the stage, Skye tugged at Pluto and they touched Mars’ head. The Pokemon didn’t startle, but instead whirled around to the audience with arms spread expressively, before Pluto cloaked him in invisibility, at the same time letting go of Skye so that it would appear that the magician had suddenly replaced the Fraxture without warning.
“-although I don’t think - ah, I see that the trick has worn off,” Skye called out with a chuckle, “That was a delightful experience, don’t you think?” Xe turned to Sylvia. “I believe being a Pokemon feels very much like what one would logically expect, really,” xe laughed.
The Gym Leader could do little more than just sit and tolerate. He really wasn’t in the mood to entertain at the moment. Finn was overworked, stressed, extremely irritated, and did not want company. Well, there were a few people he’d like the comfort of being near, but they either weren’t in the region or weren’t on the best terms at the moment.
Exhausted scarlet eyes looked over the magician, trying to figure out what he wanted. No one came into the Gym without some kind of underhanded motive. Running a hand through his hair, Finn cleared his throat. “Yeah.” He mumbled, not quite sure what he was responding to.
This situation was more than awkward. Not only did Finn have no clue what to say, but he had a feeling he really should be a little more accommodating to this guy. “What’re you doing out here, anyways? Most people steer as far away from the Gym as they can possibly get. I’m pretty infamous, both in battles and out.” It felt appropriate to ask. Well, in any event, Finn wanted to know why someone would choose the Gym over someplace a little smarter like the PokéCenter.
Sliding down the wall, Skye sat comfortably on the ground, allowing Saturn to step off of xyr shoulders and into xyr arms instead. The Pokemon gave a purring sigh, curling warmly into his trainer’s chest. Skye was pretty sure xe saw chairs not too far off, but it felt - nicer, somehow, to sit on the floor, despite its leeching away of his body heat. Saturn was warm enough to make up for it.
Materializing a flower (slipped from xyr sleeve), Skye offered it to the Linoone while the gym leader spoke. With something of a half-shrug, xe simply stated, “The gym was closer to me than the Center. I also recalled that Akihiko had mentioned you fondly, and those two points were reason enough.” Xe smiled as Saturn gnawed on the flower. “Had I stayed outside for longer, I fear that Saturn here might have nipped my ears off,” xe added, and the Pokemon paused to send xem a glare.
Cocking xyr head to the side and pacifying Saturn with a scratch under the chin, Skye continued, “Reputations are... troublesome. Difficult to maintain, and ever harder to repair. But even then, unreliable. Perhaps a fault of mine is that I tend to strictly ignore them.”
“I completely agree. Oh, I remember the allure of that stardom myself!” They laughed. “I ended up taking a slightly different route though, as you can see.” The Champion gave a little smile at that. “Ohhh, I’m sorry. I’m stalling, aren’t I? Well, let’s go ahead and do it before Dalia changes my mind!” Without a second thought, Bonny scooped up their Breloom and walked off towards the stage. It would be so different, finally standing on top of it again, instead of looking up at all those prospective young trainers from the judge’s chair.
Bonny took the stage door, just as all the performers would. They walked across the stage, setting Dalia down, who eagerly rushed off to take her spot at center-stage. There wasn’t much sound other than that of Bonny’s footsteps and racing heartbeat. And there is was, that thrill of the contest. It had all been so exciting, so wonderful… Well, it was good that they realized how bad they were at contests before they got too sucked in by them.
“Alright.” Bonny sucked in a deep breath, preparing themself for what was to come. “Let’s see if I remember how to do this.” Dalia was more than ready, but Bonny looked like the nerves were getting to them. It really had been a long time, and they didn’t want to disappoint anyone. Hopefully the professional contest star wouldn’t laugh too badly at them.
“Dalia, let’s begin with Seed Bomb!” Bonny instructed, and the Breloom was more than happy to comply. A barrage of hard-shelled seeds flew into the air, exploding in red and green. Before the smoke could dissolve, Bonny called for their next move. “Mega Drain!” In an instant, the sky was illuminated with a cloud of sparkles. It was truly something to behold. A sincere grin brightened their face as they remembered how this felt.
This is why they had liked contests all those years ago.
While Bonny prepared to get onstage, Skye settled comfortably into one of the audience seats. Pluto didn’t bother to fit himself into a different one; he simply curled up on the seat to Skye’s right, but nudged up the armrest so he could put his arms and head onto his trainer’s lap.
Skye ran a finger over Pluto’s ears as the champion’s Breloom took up the center of the stage, looking beautifully eager to begin. On the other hand... “They seem a tad anxious, don’t you think?” xe whispered, and the Zoroark crooned in response, twisting his neck to look up at xem. “Worried? No, I’m sure they’ll do fine. Such a thing is hard to remember when the spotlight’s turned on, though, as I’m sure you know well enough.”
Pluto vibrated with a purr, but let it die off before Dalia began her appeal. Skye watched with interest at the move combination, and grinned at the resulting explosion of glittering specks.
“Well done,” Skye praised from xyr spot, though xe wasn’t sure if Bonny could hear xem from where they were standing. Pluto barked in agreement, peering at the sparkles happily. Skye, however, was more attentive to the performers, who looked to be enjoying the display as much as they were.
“Didn’t lose your touch after all,” xe mused, smiling.
I’M REALLY SORRY EVERYONE BUT NAT AND SKYE ARE COMING BACK LIKE RIGHT NOW
…well more skye, as nat now has. um. nobody to rp with. //flails around// if you’re waiting on a response from nat, please like this post to let me know? ;;n;;
also since I’ve been out of the loop for so long, and i notice there are a lot of people I missed (hi, by the way), anyone want a pre-established relationship with either nat or skye?
“I agree. I always loved watching the younger coordinators. The utter passion is just… well, it’s inspiring.” Bonny smiled. “And, of course, it’s wonderful to watch them grow up and become something amazing.” Skye really was a wonderful person, Bonny thought. Xe must really love what they do. It was something Bonny could appreciate and envy.
For a moment, they wished they’d stayed on the stage. Bonny had really liked it. The opportunity to prove that their Pokémon were beautiful, no matter which category they competed in. But they could never amount to someone like Skye or even Aki. Both of them were trained professionals who had spent their whole lives on the stage, and both were equally talented and inspiring to see perform. As Skye persuaded them, Bonny’s mind was drifting towards thoughts of why not? It was a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Why pass it up?
Scrunching up their nose in defeat, Bonny laughed. “Ahh, you’ve convinced me. Now I just have to! But I’ve never even done an appeal for Aki, so don’t go bragging to him about it. I don’t think you’ll do that, but he might get jealous.” The Champion teased. It really didn’t matter; Aki had always assured them that Bonny didn’t need to do an appeal unless they wanted to. Glancing at Les, who gave them the nod of approval, Bonny looked much more enthusiastic. Clasping Skye’s hands in their own, Bonny gave them a squeeze.
“Thank you for taking the time to watch me! I’ll make sure to do my best.” Bonny didn’t really have any contest moves, but they’d do what they could. “I only wish Chii was here. He used to love contesting. But I’m sure Dalia’s more than happy to!” The Breloom nodded enthusiastically, already jittering with excitement.
“I believe I end up getting infected by their passion,” Skye confessed with a chuckle. “Every now and then, motivation wanes away, but somehow it always comes back when I see someone young participating in their first few contests.”
Well, that, and the fact that xyr Pokemon always cuddled up to xem whenever xe wasn’t really feeling into the contest mood. For some reason, that helped restore xyr motivation, too. Another thing was speaking to people like Bonny - not so much in what profession they decided on, but rather just someone as cheerful and bright as the champion was. Xe couldn’t really see how anyone wouldn’t like them.
Skye laughed, shaking xyr head. “I promise I won’t run off and brag about it to Aki,” xe reassured, “though I hope you don’t mind if I encourage you to brag to him about it.” When Bonny squeezed xyr hands, xe couldn’t help but grin a little more, lightened by the happy aura that seemed to linger around the Champion, especially at the prospect of performing again.
“I’m looking forward to it,” Skye replied, beckoning with a hand as xe followed after Pluto, who impatiently nudged Skye with his nose before bounding off to lead them in the direction of the stage.
In the short time they’d spoken, Finn had decided he didn’t much like Skye. Xe had the air of a pushover, and that wasn’t something Finn liked. At least Skye wasn’t acting rudely towards him. That would have been the deal breaker. However, the Linoone perched upon his shoulders seemed to dislike Finn almost as much as he disliked it. He scowled at the creature, making it quite obvious that he wasn’t appreciative of its attitude towards him.
“Yeah. You have to get used to the snow here. Lived here most of my life, so you get to the cold fast. You’re not dressed for it at all, though.” Finn mumbled. It would have been polite to offer xyr something, but Finn had nothing to offer. His Gym was down to just the bare necessities. After being reprimanded for destroying the place once again, the League had seen to it that all breakable items had been removed.
Yawning, the Gym Leader just shook his head. Though a nap sounded more than appealing, he had to get this work done. He’d never hear the end of it if it was delivered late, and he had already procrastinated like crazy. “’M busy. Keeping a job at the League’ll do that. Just take a seat or do whatever, I’ve gotta get this shit done.” Had he been less tired and less stressed he would have realised how rude that sounded. However, Finn really couldn’t care less at the moment. He just wanted to finish his work, call Aki, and get some much-deserved sleep.
Saturn stared coldly at Finn, refusing to react to him - though when he was scowled at, the Linoone turned his head away, huffing. Still, he decided that this person would not - physically, at least - hurt his trainer, now that he was well and truly acknowledged. So he set his head on his paws and settled, somewhat.
Truly, the feeling of Saturn relaxing against Skye’s neck was exceedingly reassuring for the magician. Xe hoped the Pokemon wouldn’t take any aggressive actions; that was the last thing either xe or the gym leader needed.
“I’m not,” Skye accepted, “which is an oversight on my part.” Briefly still as xe listened, xe decided that sitting down was probably the smartest choice. As xe wound down from the contest, some tiredness had begun to set in. “Will do,” Skye replied, and moved to the side.
Oh, this was going to be amazing. Not only being close and personal with the magician xemself but also being part of the performance! Coupled with the work that she’d done earlier in the day, it was obvious that this day was coming up Sylvia!
“Yeah, this is my first time on the magicians stage!” she happily replied, “I’ve been on plenty of other stages befo–” The sudden disappearance of Skye made her jump back, though Sylvia’s smile grew wider. “Incredible! This is 10 times better than being over there in the crowd..!” Though it was much more messy. She wiped off the stray peices of confetti and watched Skye as xe reappeared.
“I should have you know that yes and no questions aren’t my forte…” Resisting the urge to ramble on about science and all that nonsense, Sylvia thought for a few moments. “…Well…with the new technology coming out and the older technology thanks to Munna and Musharna…yes? I mean, we’re no where close to 100% understanding each and every pokemon, but we do know how different pokemon generally feel…”
That wasn’t a simple “yes or no”, but it was an answer none-the-less. The only question now was why did Skye want to know that..?
“Thank you for your complement,” Skye murmured, before Sylvia launched her explanation of an answer to xyr question.
Skye grinned - okay, so it was a bit longer than xe expected (or a bit shorter, actually; some professors just rambled and rambled so this technically wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been. At least she stopped on her own, thank goodness; cutting her off would be plain rude), but it would do. “Sounds about accurate to me; fair enough, Sylvia,” xe sang.
A slide of xyr foot to the side, and a brush of fur to xyr back. Pluto shifted and exhaled silently against Skye’s ear, and xe allowed another smile to bloom across xyr face.
“Well, I can tell you that it’s utterly delightful,” Skye said gleefully. “Perhaps I shall show you?” Turning to the audience, xe threw out the question loudly;
“What do you all think, my dear watchers? Should I try it out and see if our professor here is correct?”
There was a brief roar of assent, but Skye ignored it all, snapping xyr fingers and letting out a piercing whistle at the same time. Smoke poofed up from the ground, swirling in light grey. In an instant, Pluto’s illusionary powers surged forth, cloaking the magician in invisibility, as xe clicked open an ultra ball. Mars the Fraxture appeared in xyr place as the smoke faded.
“Fraa,” the dragon called, shaking himself briefly before giving an imitation of Skye’s grin to Sylvia. “Fraxture!”
(( I was hoping to get all of my replies cleared out before I left, but it doesn’t look like I’ll manage it - stupid unstable wifi lost my work, and it killed my muses in the meantime :/ I’ll be back in four days at the very latest, hopefully not that long, though!
Oh, Bonny had dreamed of being back on the stage for a long time. It was such a thrill. The fancy costumes, the excitement backstage, and the unbelievable passion… it had been such great fun. Bonny got starry-eyed at the thought of it. However, they were far too busy to ever re-enter the stage. Besides, their Pokémon didn’t have any good contest moves anymore. They were trained to battle, not to coordinate. Well, not anymore.
“It was absolutely no trouble at all, no need to worry!” They assured quickly, waving their hands flippantly at the prospect of it. “I’ve always loved watching the contests. Makes me wonder who’s gonna grow up to be the next big star.” They sighed. Once upon a time, Bonny had thought that star of stage might be them. It was foolish to think of that, now. Their life had taken another turn. But Bonny had never regretted it. They’d done the only thing that mattered; fulfilled Celeste’s final wishes.
The Champion blinked in surprise upon Skye’s request. The magician had just read their mind. Maybe Skye really was magical, after all! (Oh, Bonny.) “No, I’m not busy…” They mumbled, the excitement of those old days running through their veins again. Oh, they’d love to take up the request. But Bonny knew the performance would be more than lackluster. And it was better to leave the matter undecided than to disappoint someone.
“As much as I’d love to, and I really would, I’m afraid I’m not as good as you probably think. My team doesn’t exactly have their contest set anymore.” Bonny laughed idly. “It’s been years and years since we’ve done an appeal. If you’re willing to watch a battle-savvy person try their hand at contests once more, I’d love to show you. However, and I’m totally one-hundred-percent serious on this, I really haven’t done this in years.”
Skye hummed, tipping xyr head in agreement. “Personally, I love watching the younger coordinators perform, particularly those in the lower levels - it’s a great feeling to spot a rising star before they hit the upper ranks,” xe remarked, smiling.
Xe also highly appreciated the fact that the number of new coordinators hadn’t seemed to have diminished any, over the years. Despite the alluring call of battle, it seemed that interest in contests was enduring, at least for now. Skye supposed that the appeal of the stage came mostly from watching experienced coordinators like Akihiko, who could capture attention and hold it firmly. Not that xe was complaining about that at all; the opposite, rather.
As Bonny talked, Skye took a moment to listen carefully. Then, xe offered an encouraging smile. “I highly doubt you’re quite that terrible,” xe reassured. “And everyone gets even a little bit rusty after so long without practice. I think it’ll be interesting, really, and I wouldn’t mind at all if you don’t.”
Pluto caught more of a hint than xe did, or perhaps was simply better at reading body language, and was already facing towards the entrance to the backstage area. He barked out something, turning to look at both people over his shoulder expectantly. After glancing at him, Skye turned xyr gaze back to Bonny. “Try it once, just for the sake of it?”
Akihiko followed the Zoroark, pausing to flick on light switches. It wasn’t all that late in the day, but the overcast skies made it much darker than usual. He didn’t think anyone would appreciate running into furniture in the dark.
He chuckled when Aoi took his towel from Mercury and seemed to ponder how best to dry himself off. Aoi could be hopeless sometimes, honestly. He took the towel from the Altaria’s beak and rubbed it over his head a few times before moving to the fluffy wings. Akihiko knew he wouldn’t be able to dry them completely–they soaked up water almost as well as cotton–but he could at least get them from dripping wet to just damp.
He looked up when Skye spoke. “Hm? I suppose that makes sense.” He threw a towel over his own blond head and rubbed vigorously before returning to Aoi’s wings. Being wet was much more uncomfortable for the Altaria than for him.
Once he was - relatively - dry, Pluto unceremoniously dumped his towel in a corner, indicating that that was where to put them once they were done drying off. That done, he quickly went over to the hot chocolates sitting innocently on the table and scooped up his own, starting to drink it.
Skye raised a brow at Mercury, whose efforts weren’t really paying out as much as he was just having fun. Deciding to lend a hand, xe clicked xyr tongue, signaling for the Tranquil to stand up straight before taking the towel and giving him a more thorough wipedown.
After a moment, Mercury wriggled his way out of Skye’s grasp, so xe just tossed the towel onto the used pile before grabbing another new one and tossing it over to Akihiko, who was working on Aoi. Xe imagined that the poor Altaria’s wings were holding a lot more water than it looked like. “Use that if the one in your hands is too wet,” xe offered before crouching beside him.
“Oh. I thought I’d seen you somewhere before.” Finn mumbled, eyeing the Linoone sitting atop xyr shoulders. He went to contests occasionally, to see Aki perform. Of course, his bright red hair usually stuck out in a crowd, and Aki always knew if he was there. He recognised this magician, definitely. The Gym Leader couldn’t help but give a little smile at the thought of Aki speaking so kindly about him.
As soon as Skye told him which pronouns to use, Finn’s heart stopped. He’d never been good with non-binary pronouns. However, it was beneath him to apologise for it. Besides, he was sure Skye would forgive the mistake.
Running a hand through his hair, Finn sighed. “I have to ask. What brings you all the way to Snowpoint? Last I heard, Aki was in Kalos. Of course, he doesn’t tell me everything. But I have a feeling you didn’t just come here to see me.” Perhaps it was due to all the stress of the last week, but Finn really didn’t want to talk right now.
If anything, he wanted to just collapse on the floor and go to sleep. He was overworked, in trouble with the League (again), completely stressed, and desperately needed some good news. He had an aching feeling that Skye wasn’t here to give him that, though. He honestly just wanted to call Aki up and talk. Not entertain some rival of his.
Saturn was tense, muscles still coiled and poised to counterstrike. Slowly, the Linoone shifted until more of his weight was on his feet, rather than his stomach - which was pressed warmly against the back of Skye’s neck. A better position to protect from. Skye noticed the slight movement, but didn’t recognize the purpose behind it, since xe hadn’t yet seen the poise as a whole.
In the meantime, the magician decided that the gym leader was in fact quite a bit overworked, and likely needed a lot of rest. Which xe was probably getting in the way of. Internally cringing, xe resolved to leave as soon as the storm let up - or maybe convince the gym leader to nap.
In response to Finn’s question, Skye answered in an apologetic tone, “I was passing through for a contest, and spent a little too long looking around. The snow is wonderful to admire, but I’m afraid the storm quickly drove me to the nearest building - this one, as you might presume.”
Unsure of what else to say, Skye averted xyr gaze. Xe had a brief idea of suggesting that they contact Akihiko, but xe was pretty sure that they’d want a discussion between them to be private. Instead... “If I may suggest - as I doubt anyone aside for me will disturb you at this time” - guiltily, xe ducked xyr head - “that you take a moment to rest your eyes as the storm passes?”
Skye was a kind soul. Bonny could tell that right away. And xe’s Pokémon seemed like they were trained quite well, too! They listened intently, finding interest in every word xe said. Bonny had often thought about doing a contest again, but they simply didn’t have the time. Chii had been craving to get back onstage, after all. Maybe, if Skye was willing… No, of course not. That was just silly. Of course Skye wouldn’t let Bonny do a practice appeal for xem.
“You’re too kind.” They laughed. “But you’re right. Being the Champion is busy work. It took me months to get clearance for one day off, so I could come and judge this contest!” Bonny sighed. “Ah, well, I’m just as content to watch the professionals do their job. It’s nice to see someone with so much passion for what they do!”
Bonny shook their head lightly. “Well, I certainly have the spotlight. My job isn’t too subtle. However, I think I’ll be perfectly fine just battling.” The Champion shrugged. Alright, the desire was just way too strong. They really wanted Skye to see their team in action. However, they were much too shy to actually say it. So Bonny supposed it could wait for another day. Les slunk back over to Bonny’s side, after determining that Skye meant no harm to her trainer.
Bonny stroked their friend on the head lightly, just to ensure that Les’ mood stayed up. She got angry easily. And, while Bonny could understand why, they still didn’t want to see her upset. “I’m sure you’re a very busy person, though! And I’m definitely sure you have better things to do than to entertain me. I certainly enjoy your company, though. It’s always an absolute pleasure to meet someone as nice as you! And you have some lovely companions, as well.”
Idly, Skye wondered exactly how much Bonny had been able to perform on stage before the life of battling and taking the responsibility of being Hoenn’s Champion consumed all of their time. Not much, Skye presumed, or it would probably would’ve been common knowledge by now. Xe knew the League members never really got much privacy at all.
“Ah, thank you very much, and I hope we made it worth all your troubles, then,” Skye replied almost sheepishly, bowing xyr head slightly. “One would think they’d ease things up for someone of your prestige.” Poor Bonny! Skye loved xyr freedom, being able to bounce from region to region without much worry but for where contests might take place. It would be horrible to be tied down as much as Bonny likely was.
Recalling the battling aspects of Bonny’s position and how more often than not the official matches somehow ended up being aired region-wide, Skye nodded in acknowledgement. Still... Xe couldn’t deny a tinge of curiosity - what could they still do onstage, after being locked into battling for so long?
“Thank you, and I’ve enjoyed your company as well,” Skye replied, smiling gently. Pluto blinked lazily at the other Pokemon, loosening his guard a touch. At that moment, however, the Zoroark’s attention strayed a little further off. A couple moments later, Jupiter appeared with Mercury overhead, chirping a greeting. Relieved that they seemed to be alright, Skye took a moment to run xyr fingers through the Zebstrika’s coat and pat the Tranquill on the head, murmuring softly before returning them both. That done, xe turned back to Bonny, slightly hesitant. Maybe...?
“Would you like to give the contest stage one more chance?” xe asked, slowly. “If you’ve the time, of course. I personally have nothing scheduled, but I’m sure your position keeps you busy - the backstage is conveniently spacious and empty for now...”
Skye was amazing. The way xe used xyr pokemon in xyr act, how xe moved across the stage, it was almost like xe was born to be up there.
All through the performance, Sylvia sat at the edge of her seat, unable to look away from the magician. Even if it was mostly slight of hands and theivery from the other audience members, it was incredible and quite fun to watch. Next time she had to go somewhere for work she definitely needed to see if xe was performing close by.
Once Skye hopped down from the stage, she leaned back in her seat and waited for xem to pick someone. It was going to be exciting seeing what xe’d do with a second person. Maybe xe was also a hypnotist? Oh, wouldn’t that be awesome! Or maybe xe’d make the assistant disappear into thin air! In the midst of thinking of Skye’s possible tricks, she felt a hat plop onto her head.
“Wha…oh! Oh, yeah, I’d love to help you with your tricks!” Sylvia grinned, watching the hat fall off and the Linoone disappear into thin air. “And please, call me Sylvia! Professor Pine is my work name..”
“Sylvia it is, then. And thank you very much for your cooperation. Please, step right this way!” Skye said happily, still beaming at her as xe led her back to the stage. Xe was glad that she seemed to be taking well to the magic - like most of the people here; it wasn’t like xe couldn’t see the few skeptics in the audience who just rolled their eyes at everything.
“Mercury, lend me a hand!” xe shouted, and the Tranquill poofed into existence beside xem, chirping, before landing gracefully on Skye’s offered forearm. Then, SKye turned to the professor again, inquiring, “Is this your first time on a magician’s stage? I will warn you, things tend to - hm, let’s call it something between disappearing and turning into confetti - a lot.” That remark got a couple titters from the crowd. “Yes. So please, don’t panic if and when - !”
And then Pluto touched xyr arm, and xe vanished from view in a sudden flurry of colorful shreds of paper, Mercury flapping wildly in the midst of them, trilling at the top of his lungs. As the audience expressed their shock, Skye simply strolled over to the other side of Sylvia before reappearing in another burst of confetti, continuing, “ - something like that happens.”
Pretending to be ignorant of what xe’d just pulled, Skye smiled at Sylvia. “Say, being a professor and all - do you have any idea what being a Pokemon would feel like? No need for explanation - just yes or no.”
All he wanted to do was finally get some work done. Was that too much to ask? Finn had had a very stressful week, filled with lots of yelling and more than a few instances of hitting someone. Whether or not it was him getting hit, though, was something else entirely. But this person really seemed adamant in staying. And it was snowing like hell outside. So, he guessed, he’d have to let xyr stay.
“If you’d make a poor trainer, why are you here?” He grumbled. Unless he wasn’t here to battle. Not many people battled in such formal attire, after all. There was something strikingly familiar about this person, and Finn couldn’t really place it. Maybe he’d seen xem in a crowd somewhere? Ah, who cared. The person would be out of here soon, anyways. As soon as the storm let up, probably.
Then he mentioned Aki. Finn was intrigued. Looking up from his paperwork, he gave a little frown. “Aki? How d’you know him?” Finn inquired. “Just like him to send well-wishes through someone I’ve never met.” He stood, deciding that, if Aki liked this person, Finn would have to introduce himself.
“The name’s Finnigan Penn, I’m the Gym Leader here. And you are?”
While Saturn was rapidly deciding that he really really didn’t like this person, Skye blinked and shrugged. “An unhealthy dose of curiosity and a healthier urge to shelter from the storm brought me here, not the desire to battle,” xe replied lightly. The Linoone narrowed his eyes and subsided at his magician’s calm tone, but kept alert.
Still, both of them noticed that the gym leader was looking rather stressed - Skye wondered briefly if he was worried about something or simply overworked, but knew it wasn’t in xyr business to ask.
As was kind of expected, the gym leader looked up at the mention of Akihiko. “Akihiko is a rival of mine on the contest stage,” Skye answered, before shrugging. “He speaks well of you, in any case.” Which was a bit of an understatement, but no harm done.
Skye bowed slightly, making sure not to unbalance the Linoone on xyr shoulders. “Skyler Winfield, but refer to me Skye or xe/xyr, if you would. Pleased to make your acquaintance.”
Lumiouse had tonnes and tonnes of interesting things, but normally a magician wasn’t one of them. Let alone a magician who seemed as young as this Skye character. Or at least they looked young on the poster hung up in the window. Posters tended to warp how people look, Sylvia knew that all too well. Though one thing was for certain, the white suit that the magician wore looked amazingly dapper.
“Hm, lets see, lets see…Skye Winfield, preforming at Le Petite Chat Concert Hall at 7..? Well, Skye, you seem interesting enough..! I hope you’re as cool as the poster makes you out to be!” With that, Sylvia took a quick mental note and headed on her way. The Little Cat Convert Hall was fairly big compared to some venues scattered around the city. That also meant there’d be a lot of seats, which also meant that Sylvia had to hurry to get the better seats.
Come 7, Sylvia was egarly awaiting the performance to start. Thank Arceus that she managed to reserve the seat she did. It was the perfect spot and by the looks of it, if she would have waited she probably wouldn’t have got a seat. Or a good seat at least. It was a few minutes before the show actually started.
“Ooooh, this is going to be great..!” She grinned as soon as the lights started to dim a bit.
Performing for a show hadn’t exactly been on the forefront of Skye’s mind when he stepped into Lumiouse to visit a friend, but apparently the sociable lady had told several people about xem and they’d been very eager to see a show, so things just fell together as such.
Well, at least it would be a good chance to test xyr ability at improv. Taking a deep breath, Skye centered xyrself and checked over the last of what xe would need to ready before the show began, knowing that the last few minutes were ticking away. As always, Pluto hovered at xyr side - only now, he was invisible. “Steady now,” Skye murmured softly, and fur brushed across xyr side in response. Xe smiled.
The lights dimmed, and Skye walked onstage, white suit and top hat and all. “Good evening, everyone!” xe called out confidently, getting a few responses with that simple statement as xe beamed. “I’m Skye, as I’m sure you all know. Tonight, however, I’ll take you into some areas you’re less familiar with - so! Without further ado, let’s begin!”
Skye spread xyr hands before xem, showing that they were empty, before bringing the palms together. When xe pulled them apart, a Pokeball appeared to float in between xyr hands. With a wink, xe passed xyr hand over the ball, turning it into a Friend Ball that suddenly burst open, light streaming out in front of xem revealing -
- nothing? “Above you,” xe called, and as everyone looked up, there was a snap and Mercury exploded into view, wings wide and gleaming. The Tranquill trilled before lunging downward, Hidden Power crackling across his feathers. Before he could run into the audience, though, he vanished in a blink of an eye.
Skye reined in everyone’s attention again by raising xyr hand into the air, the Friend Ball floating above xyr palm. Xe clapped xyr hands together, vanishing the ball instantly. The show proceeded smoothly, with the other Pokemon appearing every now and then, and several lost phones and other miscellaneous items miraculously reappearing in the duration. Skye never stopped moving, just leaping from one trick to another.
After burning through a majority of the independent not-so little sleight of hands that came to mind, Skye decided it was time for something a little more - involved, on the audience’s side. Xe hopped off of the stage and wandered through an aisle of seats, humming thoughtfully. “You there, young lady,” xe decided, gesturing to the brown-haired lady - it only took a moment to realize that she was the Kalos professor, and xe briefly wondered what Professor Pine was doing at a magic show, of all places - “would you be interesting in helping me out in my next section?”
As xe spoke, xe took off xyr top hat and plopped the item onto the Sylvia’s head, grinning widely as the hat suddenly tipped off. Xe caught it before it hit the ground, which revealed a Linoone resting lazily on her head. Saturn sat up and chirped to the audience, turning a circle before leaping off of Sylvia’s head and apparently fading away from sight in midair.
In actuality, the Linoone was now sitting on Pluto’s shoulder, but nobody was currently aware of the Zoroark’s existence, and both Skye and xyr team were content with that.
“Professor Pine, was it not?” xe asked with a smile.
It wasn’t often that theSnowpoint City Gym Leader got visitors. Especially not at this time in the day. The Gym was slow, and prospective trainers were likely either battling each other in the snow outside, or they had given up for the day. Just the way Finn liked it. Some could call him comparable to the Grinch, with the way he behaved towards children. Well, really, the way he behaved towards people in general.
Either way, the Gym was quiet. His Pokémon were in the other room, asleep. It was just one of those lazy days, honestly. The snow was thick outside, the air was cold, and there was a mountain of paperwork that needed filling out. So the Gym Leader had resigned himself to finally getting some actual work done. However, the moment he sat down was the moment that the Gym door swung open.
What was it now? Peering up at this new visitor- who looked like he’d just come straight from a contest or something- Finn scowled. “I’m busy. Not taking any battles right now. Come back tomorrow, if you’re so inclined.” Without a moment’s thought, the boy turned back towards his papers, expecting this person to show himself out. He didn’t have the time to waste on some kid.
While beautiful to look at, Snowpoint City’s weather was not exactly ideal to stay outside in. Skye shook xyr head to dislodge some of the snowflakes that had caught themselves in xyr hair and decided that xe’d spent enough time staring at the greying clouds. If the way they were darkening was any indication, then things were about to get much chillier as time went by.
Tucked warmly around xyr neck, Saturn shifted and let out a warning churr, knowing that Skye was nowhere near dressed thickly enough to stand much more of the cold. The Linoone got a brief pat on the head for his efforts, and rolled his eyes as Skye chuckled at him. “Alright, alright,” xe mumbled, heading towards the nearest building. “We’ll go inside.”
Which just so happened to be the gym. Skye hadn’t come to Snowpoint for the purpose of meeting the gym leader, really, but xe’d been passing through due to a contest and decided why not visit this person that Akihiko had spoken so fondly of?
Of course that wasn’t the entire reason - but still reason enough to walk into the gym. Skye startled at the curt dismissal, and Saturn stiffened defensively, but xe hesitantly remained where xe was. “Ah, no - I’m afraid I would make for a poor trainer,” xe remarked wryly. “I won’t take too much of your time... Akihiko sends his regards.”
