Peter’s modular videos are my favorite synthesizer demo videos. They are about more then the gear. He always presents a theme with variations, and his patches are always simple enough to make sense just from viewing them in the video. (Reposted because the video didn’t embed before!)
First patch with the Shapeshifter. SS is in Chord mode, playing 5ths, sequenced by René and gated by Optomix. Frames, Maths and the Pittsburgh LFO are modulating SS FM index, OSC1 waveshape, OSC2 ratio, and Optomix Control. Wogglebug woggle out is modulating the Optomix channel 2, which gets the wavefolder output from the Shapeshifter.
René, Wogglebug and Echophon are clocked from the SCM. Echophon has its feedback loop run through the Erbeverb. The Erbeverb is modulated via the Planar joystick and has the CV out patched back into the Planar's X axis, which controls the damping.
Andy Falconer on the making of “The Orb’s Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld”
Andy Falconer was one of the engineers on The Orb’s Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld, one of my favorite albums of all time. He recently wrote an article on his website responding to an earlier (now deleted) post by another Ultraworld alum, Kris “Thrash” Weston. My interest in these stories is not the interpersonal stuff (though it is juicy), but the glimpses into the creation of one of my greatest musical influences.
After chatting with Andy on Twitter, he took to Facebook and began posting some additional details of the Ultraworld production, which it turns out he was typing one-fingered from a hospital bed (he’s recovering from a lung infection, and thankfully was just cleared to go home!). He was generous enough to allow me to post the contents of his writing here.

Are you sitting comfortably? Then let us begin.
No HD recording. No Mac, PC or Pro-tools. This is back in the days of ATARI 1040ST running Notator Logic. This was just used to record and control MIDI data. 90% of the sampling was done using the Akai S1000 and some on my Roland S-50. There was also the odd DX7 etc involved.
We recorded just about everything to tape on a 24 track analogue OTARI 80 2inch open reel running in sync with a Mitsubishi X-850 32 track digital 1inch. These were synchronised using SMPTE but I can't remember the name of the third party control unit. The Mitsubishi had a built in Time code track so you didn't loose one for the code, but the OTARI being old school didn't have this trick, so was reduced to 23 usable tracks.
The running time of a tape on the OTARI was 30ips without any noise reduction. This gave us 15 minutes recording time till the tape ran out. The standard joke on the sessions was the question from the tape-op "how long is the track" and somebody would ask him "how long is the tape". The Mitsubishi had 1/2 hour playing time and for both machines only Ampex tape was used.
The desk was a DDA split console 32/32 with NO automation. A lot of good outboard gear with the Lexicon 480 being the main reverb running as two stereo modules and ALWAYS with my own programming. Stuff like TC delays, Rev 7, Midi verb and Ultraharmonizer also in the racks as well as a couple of 3D auto panners we'd hire in.
Some of the tracks such as Star 6, 7, 8 & 9 or Into The Fourth Dimension came with an arrangement or stucture from the persons/person who had written the track. Others not, but regardless all new musical or rhythmic parts generated in the studio were always recorded down the entire length of the tape i.e no arrangement. I would build these sampler/midi parts up on the analogue 24 track (warm sound for all those dubby beats and bass) and always leave a bunch of stereo tracks open on the Mitsubishi for whenever Alex wanted to free-form stuff straight to tape. Either from Deck, DAT, CD and sometimes live from a sampler. Kris and me both did some of this stuff as well, but Alex WAS the main man. Once we'd got everything on tape that we wanted I would get centre stage. I would build up the mix, get the effects on and get a good technical balance checking all tbe boxes as well as having fun with getting wild and creative with all the outboard. I'd then run a mix down onto DAT and make sure I always got a good start and finish.
Then it would be Kris's turn to shine. Like I mentioned, we had no automation and for half the stuff no real arrangement. When you wanted to bring things in and out you had to use the cut and solo buttons or push the faders (keeping an eye on my marks from the China Graph pencil). At that point that was the real talent of Kris. He could play the mutes and solo's like a pianist on a concert grand. Unfortunately rarely for the length of a whole track without screwing up but it didn't matter. We'd just run endless variations of sections off onto tape until he had exhausted his muse. Then Alex would normally get up and have a go, but it would be shorter and much more pedestrian. At this point there would be a couple of hours of bits if mixes on the DAT tape/tapes.
Back over to me...I'd settle down with a pair of headphones in front of a Studer 1/4" stereo open reel and cut the track together. Simply done by going through the DATS finding the bits I wanted, copying the sections over to the Studer and cutting them together with a hardback razor blade. Old school "cut and paste". That was how final arrangements for most tracks was done.
After a track was finally mixed and edited on the Studer it was copied back over to the DAT. BTW still Ampex tape all the way and the DAT was a Sony (trying to remember....DTC 1000?).
Once all tracks were completed we assembled the monster. Again, no pro-tools etc. This was done by running the DAT masters back onto the Mitsubishi as Stero pairs. Little Fluffy went onto tracks 1 & 2, Earth went onto 3 & 4 etc. Each track with a small overlap and Alex having the opportunity on further digital tracks on the Mitsubishi to lay down more effects and build up the transitions. Ta-da! Final mix balance and run off onto DAT one more time and finished.
I say finished, but I heard it was a nightmare to Master (I wasn't there) and no wonder. Because we'd already assembled the album the guy doing the job had half hour long chunks to deal with of some pretty extreme audio program and not even a fraction of the computer support you'd take for granted now. Just like how the album was made. Old School "hand work" and of a type that's just about dead.
O.K I think that's about it and more than you probably thought you'd get. But technical aside, I'll say it again. Alex brought the people together, he brought the beats, the vibe and the concept. I translated that into sound for him and Kris brought the energy for the mix. Worked.

Picked up a MakeNoise RxMx mixer and FXDf filter bank at the Hideout synth nerd meet-up. My friend Nate always does great stuff with his Moog filter bank so it was nice to finally try one out.
Thanks to Wesley at Chicago's first Eurorack dealer Synth City (*finally*). I cannot say how excited I am to be able to pick up modules in Chicago instead of mail ordering them from Brooklyn and LA.

I recorded a little sequence with the Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas, Hexinverter Mutant Bass Drum and the Mutable Instruments Braids. The Basimilus is my favorite thing I've picked up since the Braids. It's a digital additive/fm percussion module capable of an enormous range of sounds. It's got its own AD envelope generator which saves me a ton of patching.
Here I am sequencing the Basimilus with a Makenoise Rene and modulating its parameters with a Makenoise Pressure-Points/Brains. The Mutant Bass kick drum is being triggered by the Intellijel µSeq, and the Braids is being tweaked by the sample and hold from the MN Wogglebug then running through an Echophon. Various stuff winds up going through an Eventide PitchFactor too. As is often the case with my stuff, the rhythmic center comes from the 4ms Quad Clock Distributor, which is another one of my favorites.
I hope this stuff is interesting to read about. Sorry I can't link to everything but hey the Googles does its thing really well!
What kind of shirt do you wear when you play your synth? Is it made of linen? Does it have wizard sleeves? You need to examine your synth-wear choices critically and get on Michael Stearns' level.
Sometimes it's fun to use the modular to try something pretty. This is a clip of a pad/lead sound I'm working into a mix. There are two main VCOs, the TipTop Z3000 and the Synthesis Technology E350 Morphing Terrarium.
The square wave from the Z3000 is being modulated with a medium-fast sine LFO into the linear FM with just a tiny index to make it quaver a little. The pulse-width is being modulated much more slowly using the red channel from the 4MS Pingable Envelope Generator.
Bank B of Morphing Terrarium's wavetables provide the bell- and organ-like overtones that phase in and out when the note is held down. I'm using a the blue channel of the PEG to cycle through the MT's Y-axis and the Expert Sleepers Disting LFO to cycle through the X-axis. I'll write a whole other post on the Morphing Terrarium sometime because it's my favorite oscillator.
Both VCOs feed into the MakeNoise MMG filter, with the Z3000 feeding into the AC-in and the MT feeding into the DC-in after being attenuated by the Intellijel µAtt to keep it from overtaking the mix.
The MMG works as both a VCF and a gate, which means when the filter is closed all the way, it "clamps" to zero volume and shuts off the sound entirely. In spite of this, I still have the MMG's output passing through the Intellijel µVCA for no particular reason other than I patched it in before the MMG and was too lazy to bypass it.
Both the MMG and the µVCA are being opened by the TipTop Z4000 envelope generator, which is a traditional ADSR envelope.
The output of the µVCA is patched into the MakeNoise Echophon, which adds a nice echo to the sound. I should write up a post on that one too, because it's another one of my favorites.

I'm not sure what it is about the synthesizer that I love so much, but it’s the only past-time I’ve ever been interested in that I haven’t grown bored of. It has something to do with the overlap of my fascinations with machines and music, and the endless variety of sound you can get out of one device really appeals to my restless ears.
I first became aware of synthesizers from either 3-2-1 Contact or my dad's copy of Switched on Bach. At the very least I was aware that there was an instrument called a Moog and they ran on electricity and made noises that other instruments couldn't.
I also remember that any time I went to Radio Shack or a department store I would find the aisle where the synthesizers were and start messing around with them. These were cheap Yamaha or Casio consumer synths, not professional workstations.
My dad bought himself a Yamaha PSR-500 when I was in college and when I would come home for breaks I would play with it endlessly, programming songs into the built-in sequencer and playing with the auto-chord accompaniment. Eventually Dad lost interest in the synth and loaned it to me. I was playing in a band with my roommate and we started writing little compositions for keyboard and bass guitar.
It wasn't until after college when I had a job that I actually could afford a "real" synth. My first professional quality instrument was a Roland JP-8000 virtual analog modeled after the Roland Jupiter series of the 80s but using digital software to emulate the sound of a subtractive analog synth. It was a glorious toy, covered with knobs and sliders and full of amazing presets.
Since the Roland I've owned many other synths, most of which I still have. Lately I've been more into Eurorack (officially the Doepfer A-100 spec) modular synthesizers because of their infinite reconfigurability and because they can be purchased and resold piecemeal.
My intention with this tumble-matic web-log is to keep a journal of work I’m doing and to provide some interesting reading for people starting to get into synthesis. I’m a serial abandoner of blogs and projects, but I’m hopeful that since this is THE topic that interests me more than anything else I’ll keep at it a bit more.
