Skyrim Unseen: The Metapost
At the beginning of the semester, when considering how to approach my Tumblr blog and subsequent assessment, I decided to blog about the popular role-playing game, Skyrim, published by Bethesda Softworks. I felt at the time that Skyrim was the best thing to post about because it help sway over me; addicted to the game, it was all I did, day and night, and I thought it would make posting on a regular basis easier if I engaged with the subject matter.
When considering my subject matter and general intended audience (people who enjoyed video games and film, with a good sense of humour on the side) I figured that gifs, images and links to videos and other sites were the best way to build my blog and gain an audience. I began creating my own images based on Skyrim, which I parodied and drew, scanning them into my computer and uploading them with glee.
I also reblogged a lot of content, in the hope that it would help broaden my viewership and reach a wider subset of people. I aided this by using popular hashtags within the Skyrim-come-Tumblr community, such as “#skryim”;”#tes” and “#elderscrolls”, which I researched, and found they garnered a lot of popular traffic to their content. I also began using my own personal hashtag, “#jarlbalgruufsswag”; a popular joke among the Skyrim community, as well as my own identifier, to help fellow bloggers recognize my own work on Tumblr.
When attempting to give myself an avatar for the blog, I ran into a technical issue: When trying to upload an image, for whatever reason, nothing happened. Whenever I tried again to change my avatar, I simply could not change the image from the ‘Anon’ setting, no matter how often I tried.
When considering how best to build the foundations of my viewership, I linked my blog to a Facebook page I made, which has around 8000 ‘likes’, in the hope that a wider audience to my links may snag me some more followers. I also linked my blog to my personal Twitter account, as well as embedding an RSS feed from the Twitter account of Bethesda Softworks to my blog, to keep my followers informed and up to date with any Skyrim or Elder Scrolls news.
My blog, known as Skyrim Unseen, gained a modest following of 19 bloggers. Some were students whom I connected with in classes, and some were gained simply through posting, tagging and reblogging content; aiming the right content at the right people. I also began using Google analytics to watch how my blog developed: The data gathered showed that 49 individual people viewed my blog, and most of my viewers came from Australia. My most popular content was a combination of my own creations, reblogged Skyrim content and humorous gifs and images.
I also installed Disqus, a program that allows Tumblr accounts to comment on one another’s content, into my own blog. This allowed other users to connect and interact with my each other and my blog, reinforcing the networking of media I was trying to achieve. The comment system was used by a handful of followers, though not as much as I might have liked.
To develop my blog further, I added a basic ‘about’ page, containing information about the page, and a link to an appropriate video to initiate the uninitiated into the Skyrim fold. I utilised the basic HTML knowledge afforded me through classes to create my simple ‘about’ page.
In terms of referencing and plagiarism of other peoples content, whenever a post is reblogged on Tumblr, the original source is kept with the content. This ensures the original author of the post (potentially NOT the original author of the content) will be acknowledged when reblogging their content. I discussed this philosophy with my tutor, and he and I agreed this was sufficient in reducing plagiarism.
At times, posting to my blog was an uphill struggle: I am the ‘procrastinator’, the person who forgets things or puts things off. However, I generally stuck to the blog quite well, and maintained fairly consistent posting, even to just reblog content from my feed. Though at times I truly did hit a wall (mostly when my interest in Skyrim waxed and waned), I did truly enjoy the experience of the blogosphere, all of which is a new and exciting place for me.
Lastly, I should like to link you to my Top Three Posts, which I feel show my blog as a whole, as well as being among my most popular posts. I believe they engage with my audience, as well as my subject matter and the notion of networked media, and are all my own creations; text, hand drawn images and craft projects alike. Thank you for coming with me on my blogging journey, and may your swords stay sharp.

Haunted Canberra: A Geo-Narrative Rationale
For my Networked Media Production Project, I chose to create a geo-narrative: A customised Google map, incorporating images and text to tell a story. I decided early on that my map should tell the story of Haunted Canberra: Inspired by Weird Canberra’s Ghost Tour, run by Tim the Yowie Man, and my deep-seated love and fascination with all things paranormal, I embarked on a photographic quest of all things haunted across our nation’s capital.
My technical process took up much of my time on this assignment: Though I could take HD photographs, I was unable to use any detailed light settings on my camera, as it is a poorly made camera, designed more for digital filming than photography. As such, I was forced to take photos carefully, deciding the right composition and timing to take them in order to get visible images. When constructing the HTML for the assignment, I posted the images I used to my Tumblr account, and used their subsequent URLs as the source for my HTML to embed the image. I discovered (to my brief grief) that when an image was posted on its own, the HTML (or perhaps Google Maps) could not locate it; however, when posted in a photo-set, the URL was perfectly usable.
When creating my HTML for the image and text boxes, I had to refresh myself on the tags and attributes for each item. Having learned the basics of HTML in high school, it quickly came back to me, both in classes and when working on my assignment. I felt the story I had to tell only needed the bare essentials of text and images, and thus did not create anything too complex for the HTML boxes. I feel as though what I did create, along with the story I composed, is enough to get the message across.
Culturally speaking, the ghost tour is significant to anyone with a thirst for adventure, interest in ghosts or tourists visiting Canberra to see the sights of our nation’s capital (or even those less adventurous types who live here and have never seen their own city…). The landmarks I visited and documented during the course of the assignment are culturally significant in their own individual ways, and are more so as a group, where they stand together to be part of the Weird Canberra Ghost Tour.
Though it remains firmly grounded in the traditional Canberra ghost landmarks, my geo-narrative is different in that it gives a geographic context to where each site is, and its relation to the others. This, along with the fact that it is online, for the public to view at no cost or hindrance, makes it readily accessible to a wider audience.
I feel that my geo-narrative, Haunted Canberra, is a succinct, yet broad overview of the numerous haunted sites Canberra has to offer its tourists and curious residents. The fact that it is presented online in a semi-interactive state allows it to be viewed by a wide audience and engaged with on a geographical level from the comfort of one’s own home; the perfect stepping stone to getting off the couch and taking the tour for real.

G'day my fellow Nords,
The time of the meta-post quickly approaches, and as I write it I feel a mixture of happiness and sadness about this blog... I guess you will all read about it tomorrow...

My Gift to the World
So after watching a lot of Skyrim Gamer Poop again lately, all I can say is this: Skyrim is really easy to make fun of/ make ridiculously crude and funny gags out of it's footage. As such, for those uninitiated Daedra worshipers out there, I should like to share this with you. Allow it to be my gift to you <3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPllpzxmM5k
