I wondered what might happen if I left this all behind
Would the wind be at my back
Could I get you off my mind
this time
Kyung won gets the news suddenly, but it is not wholly unexpected. Their value as a sexual slave had never been very high, and they had rarely attracted an actual customer. However, they possess many other skills like might be useful in a servant. An older woman, sharp and stern, but not without warmth, has been visiting them regularly in the Grind. Stricken with grief, they have been helping bus tables and performing custodial duties rather than attempting to sell themself to masters. Mistress Joan was quick to correct their posture, and almost as quick to offer her condolences.
Mistress Joan returns often, always finding Kyung won and getting to know them. I’m looking for a live-in slave, she says, but I have one already and you are not my type. Kyung won replies if I am not your type, why were you considering me? Mistress Joan is looking for a housemaid and a tutor for her grandchildren. She asks if Kyung won is good with children.
Oh yes, I love children. I took care of the younger children in my orphanage, they say. I helped them study for their exams.
Mistress Joan appears impressed. There’s an offer in her face, but she does not speak it. Kyung won hopes against hope that she will purchase them, and they may leave the house and do work that doesn’t leave them drained and unhappy and counter to their nature.
But still they are filled with anxiety and dread. Leaving the House means leaving Aine. The one person who needs them most in the world. They’d only just begun teaching her to become independent and think for herself. Then there’s Michael, the man who carries a third of Kyung won’s heart, a man whom they love and cherish. If Mistress Joan buys them and takes them away, what of them?
Mistress Joan is not opposed to allowing Kyung won to remain in contact with their friends. The way she sees it, utter seclusion can only lead to unhealthy habits and problems down the road. Kyung won’s anxiety is not abated. They might be able to stay in contact with Michael, but Aine is not permitted.
Would you consider buying another slave? They ask, during one meeting.
Mistress Joan shakes her head. No.
Kyung won doesn’t fight. If she wants to buy them, there is nothing they can do about it. Frankly, there is little they want to do about it. There is far more good they can do outside the House than in it, and maybe one day, when her grandchildren didn’t need a tutor any more, she would set them free. She was a practical woman, Kyung won dared to hope.
If one day she freed them, the first thing they will do is find Aine, and together they can enjoy the life they envisioned.
The news comes suddenly and without warning. Mistress Joan purchased them, and they are to leave the House immediately. They have enough time to have their tearful good byes with all of their friends in the House. They have enough time to kiss Aine goodbye and fervently promise her that they will return, and they will find her one day, and that no matter what, they love her and they are not abandoning her.
There’s one last parting gift. A journal with “What I Want for Myself” printed on the cover in Kyung won’s unsteady hand. Inside, a love note and their promise, repeated in English and Korean. Use it to write your bucket list. Never forget what we want together. I won’t. Love, always, Kyung won.
It tears at their heart to leave. Leaving part of yourself behind hurts as much as it would if it were literal.
Kyung won doesn’t get the chance to say goodbye to Michael. They write him a letter, in it the number for the phone Mistress Joan has given them, and pages of their love, apologies, and promises to return a free person.
With that, Kyung won Rhee steps into the town car of their new Mistress, a changed person for everything they’ve been through. A better person. A stronger person.

Thomas shook his head, confused and a little scared who this person could be. When they finally told him, he felt a lump grow in his throat, his eyes going down as he took a deep breath. “How?” he wrote with a shaky hand.
Kyung won sniffed. “He... hit by a car... Saved a little girl.” They wiped their cheeks with their stretched-out sleeves. “I-I’m sorry no one told you.”
Kyung won blinked, confused, unable to tell whether he was joking or not. “Really?” They scratched under the kitten’s small, fuzzy chin. “Um, it isn’t mine, I found it in the alley next to the Grind.” Chewing their lip, they took a couple steps forward. “Would you like to pet it?”
Aleaha couldn’t even imagine how those who knew Hollis for years felt about their loss and just seeing Kyung this way told her that they had been close. She wrapped her arms tightly around them, her hand moved to the back of their neck, fingers moving through the back of their hair and she rubbed her fingers gently through their hair. She sniffled and let out a few breaths nodding her head “it’s not fair, it’s so not fair, he didn’t deserve to die.” she admitted her voice cracking slightly “it’s ok, I got you” she breathed out, she turned her head to place a comforting kiss against the side of their head.
They crumpled into her arms, suddenly the sad, lonely child they’d been growing up, heart full of longing and hopelessness. They hadn’t felt this hopeless since it became apparent that they would never know their parents. Since, their unfailing optimism had been one of their greatest traits, but now? Hollis had nearly tasted freedom only to have Gunner snatch it away when he vanished. “H-h-he wasn’t supposed to be there!” They cried. “He was supposed to be free!”
Kyung won looked at him, their face growing paler. “... You did not know?” They looked at their own hands, brow furrowed deeply. “Um... Hollis... he, uh, he... he passed away.”
He heard a quiet meow and quirked an eyebrow. “Well … I can guess at what’s happening, but I could go in front of a lie detector and say without any hesitation that I didn’t see a hair of the little fur ball’s head.”
Kyung won looked from the kitten to the young man. “Would you really lie to help us?” They scooped up the little creature and held it in both hands. It mewed meekly as they tucked it against their chest.
Aine couldn’t help the stuttered moan that came out as she rested back against the bed, Kyung won rubbing against her thigh. It was like her training went out the window when she whimpered and begged, “P-Please, my cock, please…”
Kyung won kissed her deeply, drawing away slightly to nod. They crawled down the length of her body, kissing her chest, her belly, and when they lifted the flouncy skirt up over her hips, they kissed each of her thighs. Her stuttering voice, mewling and desperate, excited them. They kissed the bulge in her underwear, hooking their fingers in her waistband.
Aleaha watched the way they reacted. She had barely known Hollis for as long as others in the house, she could only imagine what those who knew him well were going through. She didn’t say anything, she rose from the bed and walked over to them, wrapping her arms gently around their shoulder and pulling them in for a hug “it’s ok to cry and be sad, he was an amazing man” she admitted as she sniffled.
Kyung won returned her embrace. They held her as if they were afraid she might vanish as well. Their heart was so filled with grief and sorrow, it felt as if it were pumping pain through their veins. “H-h-he was amazing. A w-wonderful person.” But he was so much more than that too, they just couldn’t voice it through their anguish. “This is s-s-so unfair,” they hiccuped into her shoulder.
He smiled at them and took out his iPad so he could write out, “Thanks. Are you okay?” They didn’t seem as energetic as they normally were and Thomas was immediately concerned.
They shook their head “no.” If ever that dandelion had wilted, it was now. They felt shriveled and empty. “I am very sad.” In the wake of losing Hollis, they’d lost some of their confidence in expressing themself.
Alexander looked at them and nodded “Don’t know about the good part but I was raised to be a gentleman, at least by my mother.” he admitted. “Oh you don’t have to call me sir, makes me feel so damn old, you can call me Alexander or Alex.”
“Uh,” they rubbed their forearm uncomfortable. “It sounds like you had a kindly mother, A-Alexander.” Kyung won looked around then, as if a guard might appear and punish them for addressing a master by first name in public.
Michael chuckled at that. “I don’t too many people that call me cute, but thank you.” He smiled down at Ky, a hand going to their hair. “You ready to go back out there?”
“I don’t mind if I am the only person who does,” they said, shyly taking his other hand in their own. “Yes, if I must.” Kyung won stood on their toes and kissed him.
Michael remained silent as Ky cried against him. HIs large arms wrapped around the other tightly, as if that could be enough to take their pain away. Hit by a car? Sparks of recognition hit Michael hard. He had heard about the accident, but it was being handled by someone else and he had been buried in a heavy case to bother to find out the who and what. His callousness toward the situation burned right then, but he pushed that aside. “I did not know that,” he said. “I didn’t know him that well, but he sound like he was wonderful. How grand you got to know someone like that, Ky.”
Despite such humble beginnings, Kyung won had been fortunate enough to never have a close friend die. They’d experienced grief and sorrow, certainly, but never the hopelessness and shock of losing someone so permanently― so violently. “He-he was, a-and so much more!” They sobbed. “Wh-what do I do now? Oh, Michael, it hurts so much.”
