A below-ground cage is one of the most primitive and effective. The cage is very small, so the slave can not lie down, sit up or stretch out. The slave is handcuffed with his hands behind his back, shackled, collared, and gagged. It is pushed into the cage / hole, and the heavy metal grate is slammed shut and locked. The slave is forced to look up to see anything, and all it can see are the soles of his Master’s boots standing on the grate. The slave must crouch down on its knees, or curl up on its side, which becomes uncomfortable very quickly because its shoulders and neck ache, and its head droops down very awkwardly. Being outside, the slave will be subjected to the elements of the weather: hot or cold; rain, snow, sunshine or if the lid is closed, complete darkness. The slave will hear all the night sounds and not even have the “comfort” of being inside, in the cage in the dungeon, where it knows it will be safe. The Master turns and goes inside, and the cage is left open so the slave can begins to feel the fresh air envelop his naked body and prepare, mentally and physically, for many hours, or days…secured by steel….outside.
