young marines on adak island, a remote island in the aleutian islands chain in the bering sea, 1200 mi / 1930 km southwest of anchorage, alaska.
after its use in world war two to defend against the japanese army, adak island continued to be an important asset to the u.s military before being abandoned in 1997.
the remnants of barracks, hangars, prefab huts and even a mcdonald's is a familar site to the now small population of 171, down from almost 90,000 stationed troops during world war 2.
